just update my bios from A10 to A11. never thought of updating bios is so ez, just double click the let the system do it for u XD. but what i dont like about it is need to attach the battery, turn off UAC still ok.

I'll be honest, I didn't give much of my attention to the Studio XPS 1340 users on the previous thread (because I didn't own a Studio XPS 13). It's kinda hard for me to realize and understand some of the issues faced by Studio XPS 1340 owners.
So if any of you would like to be the thread starter for Dell Studio XPS 13, drop me a PM and I'll do some arrangements with you.
Suggestions or feedback to this thread are welcome.

yea...this laptop is facing lots of problems. mine crashes nearly everyday for no reason and i just had it barely a week ago. not to mention a few more other issues. there's even an xps 13 horror thread on NotebookReview forum.

well, basically SXPS16 and SXPS13 are very different... SXPS16 is Intel chipset with ATi graphic while SXPS13 is Nvidia chipset with Nvidia graphic and runs on SLI as well...

anyway, if there's any SXPS13 users who dun mind contributing, pls refer to the thread in my siggy (Laptop graphic), really want to see the performance between 9400M G only, 9500M GE only and SLI...

Does anyone know how to get the bluetooth on?

It seemed to be turned off in Control Panel, then I can't find it in Device Manager and the "transmission tower" glowing icon on the top of the keyboard did not do anything as well.

Please help.

Then you'll probably have to dig BIOS a bit and activate the radio switch and all its functions (WIFI, Bluetooth etc).

i wonder u guy got this problem or not.after i update my bios to A11, i feel that my gpu and cpu temperature kinda high when playing those light game...i dont feel this problem when i using A10

im so sad today....i got my money already..when i went to low yat...all shop got no stock ady for sxps 16...i even alk to pavvy and klcc juz to look for it..in the end,i balik with tangan kosong...guys,do u know anywhere around KL or PJ that sells sxps 16..?d one wif 4670..

ok, i got mine from ACOMP LINK in sunway pyramid.the shop located at the highest floor, in IT world. a very nice seller.(get 1 free bag from him when i bought mine). this is the number, 03-7491 9277

before getting a cooler, try elevating the laptop slightly first...

oh, then purchasing online will give u a better deal tho...
u add in another RM200 for the 500gb 5400rpm hard disk whereas online just need RM148
and u can get a 17" belkin bag

hi guys, i m interested in purchasing the dell studio xps 16...i m a casual gamer (hopefully it can support starcraft 2 and dragon age) and i love the RGB LED screen..it's one of its kind...
Everyone said that i should wait for windows 7 to be released first...or should i just wait till intel core i5 is applicable in this laptop? When do you think i5 is available?

Anyone thinks it's worth it to get the 256gb SSD instead of the 500gb 7200rpm HDD? The faster speeds are too alluring..but there's also the exponential price increase to consider.

about the epp discount coupon....actually it could only use for the worker that works in the bank or government....as for me im only a student and she help me to get the discount which is 8%off about rm900 off from the original price which normally u cant get....so happy and sastified!!!

That will almost be a non-factor once the TRIM command gets utilized with Win 7. Provided it does what they say it can do. But at Dell's prices, I'd rather buy a separate SSD and install it myself.

i left my studio xps 16 like a desktop....take out my battery and run for about 2 months non stop and didnt off before....tough like a desktop with cooling pad below off course...

mine pevious one is also 3670 but i bought a new one with i7 and hd4670 because my previous one has been stolen...u can see how good is the laptop that i will bought second time...no doubt that it is the best laptop at the price range...a laptop "troooper" i must said hehe

k40in not so good in gaming coz the gc sux(integrated),k40ab better coz it use hd4570 ,so if u r on budget ,u can consider k40ab.but since u have the budget, buy k40ab for what while sxps16 is a lot better?

They should both use the same socket as they are based on the same Montevina platform. So yes, you can replace your current processor with the quad core extreme variant, even though it'll probably cost you a third of what you originally paid for your laptop.

juz got back from a dell store...they sell SXPS 16 but da gpu only 3670 but da ddr 3 upgrade until 8gb...da price is still rm4.2k...but den,i wan da SXPS 16 wit da 4670 gpu ;(

that surely is old stock.got 1 shop offer me that kind of spec b4,and when i ask about the gpu,they say 4670.when i call them to write me a receipt and was about to pay my deposit,they write there 4570 512mb so i feel very weird.then they confirm with me is 3670 but i want 4670 and ask whether i can configulate or not but they dont provide this kind of service and say that getting 4670 with overheat problem is not practical and the price of gpu doesnt cost much. what i did after that is just BYE BYE

most of the time is the connection itself make u lag. what do u mean can meh in 8gb ram??about the hard disk size, it's depend on u.for me 320gb is definitely enough but for some1 else ,320gb might not be enough. for the wireless network card, choose the 5100 will be sufficient.as for the spare battery...do u really need a spare battery?u dont play online games at home most of the time?btw,i dont recommend u to use battery when u playing game.total how much?

i think got some problem with it.try to customize again and see.as astria said, 4670 is overkilled for online game.what kind of online game u play?6-cell battery can last for 2hours+ for nomal use,if use for gaming then it should be shorter.for 9-cell,3 hours + for normal usage. therefore i think use battery during gaming is impractical.

For games alone, you will almost never utilize all 4GB of RAM, so 8GB is overkill.

But I like overkill. It makes sure your laptop is as future proof as it can be.

my pt is, if u get a Studio 15, which is also enuf (not as overkill as SXPS16), u save rm1k, and u can do so much more with that...

not nice for games like Crysis, World in Conflict, etc...

but it's still a bit overkill for online games...

heck, even my old laptop's 8600M GS, which is still weaker than HD4570, can play Cabal at high setting and lag only when a lot of ppl use skills at the same time...

well, HD4570 is 33% better than 8600M GS if we look at 3D Mark 06... in real life i expect at least 20% performance increase... so i doubt u'll lag when u play at high settings...

besides, i believe online games will stay at DX9.0C for at least 2 to 3 more yrs... DX10 is not performance friendly, and DX11 is still new... so there's not a really solid reason to get a graphic card that's totally overkill for wat u play...

of course, if u play offline big title games as well, that's another story...

Ultimately you have to make up your own mind, you're the one using the notebook; if you're willing to spend on this notebook then by all means go ahead and get one.
I don't play games often, maybe once every 4 months; having this notebook isn't overkill for me, doesn't stop me from getting one either.

ok... cuz Dell Website there got new release driver update... so i downloaded and installed... after that... i found the games normally not even a lag... now become so lagging...
example... street fighter 4... with 1280x720 with high setting, 2xAA, 4xTexture playable in 60fps... after the driver updated... become 40fps-50fps... sometimes breaking down to around 20fps... that's mean not smooth d... if shooting games how? cant even touch those kind of games d... hmmm...
I cant find back the old driver... the name of driver i want to find is R198xxx.... something...

try clean install instead...

get Driver Sweeper from guru3d.com to clean the old driver, then u install the new one...

fyi for Catalyst Win7 beta, the driver itself has not changed since 9.7...

i ve installed 9.9, but the Catalyst package itself report that the graphic driver will not be updated, and on GPU-Z, it shows as Catalyst 9.7...

not really, Nvidia even worse, officially their mobile Forceware comes out only once every 3 mths...

last time when i was using 8600M GS, i everytime use modded driver...

NVM... i found the old driver d... should be ok... not time to test...

Win7 suppose use a little of cpu and RAM..But my CPU sometimes go to 50% sometimes 19%..

Programs and services dictates the CPU usage, BIOS will be less of an influence.
However if the new BIOS screwed up Intel Speed Step, then it might cause unstable CPU core clock speeds, not CPU usage.

Well, I won't go as far as saying the BIOS is faulty, but I did notice the GPU temperature went up to about 5 degrees Celsius in average.
Not sure if you could downgrade the BIOS version, apart from rise in GPU temperature I didn't experience any unstable CPU usage.

but Vista x64 and Win7 x64 use more RAM than the x86 flavour, mainly cuz they need to support 32-bit stuff as well...

If you think the CPU issue is troubling you a lot, might as well downgrade it.
I didn't experience sluggish performance on my system, so I'll stick to A11 for now.

Anyone having problem with the CD ROM?
Weirdly this things just happened, whenever I put a disc in it will never able to read any files.
Tried with few different DVD, no luck so far.

Lolz... You are willing to spend RM4k for a laptop... Why not spare a bit more to protect it? tongue.gif

Zalman is a good cooler for SXPS 16 because the vents are located at the palm rest area which is the area that gets warm pretty quickly... Also Zalman has 2 fans and they are very quiet even when turn on to the max... biggrin.gif

Hope this help explains why its good to go for Zalman... smile.gif

Refer back to first post, at the bottom I posted a link to ATI Mobility Modder; it basically modifies the regular PC drivers that you've downloaded, so you can install it onto your notebook.
Anyway, here's the link, save you some trouble. Step-by-step installation guide is on that page as well.
So, you need both ATI Catalyst 9.9 and ATI Mobility Modder to install ATI PC drivers to your notebook.

That is really up to you, seeing as it is your cash. It offers good performance for its price and is extremely suitable for people looking to get a little more out of their games. Everyday computing capabilities ain't to shabby either. And I absolutely love its RGBLED screen, though you do have to pay a premium price which isn't quite worth it, IMO.

Modded drivers like DNA or Omega are tailored specifically for notebook users, so you don't need to modify anything with modded drivers.
On the other hand, stock PC drivers from AMD website, Guru3D etc needs modding in order for the installation to proceed, otherwise you'll get a warning/error message saying it can't locate/detect any suitable ATI hardware or something along those lines.

I don't know if you guys have discovered this, but it seems that many gestures which are not shown in the synaptics software settings are actually available with the driver from Dell. It supports gestures like pinch zoom, 2 finger rotate, and also 3 finger flick for back or forward.

No. It's an OEM version that is tied directly to your laptop's hardware. So unless you get a new activation key, you cant install it anywhere else.

After having monitored Dell's prices for some time now, I can tell you that the only time Dell offers any substantial discounts on their models is when they have one week promos, which are quite infrequent. Like the Dell Days of Deals which just passed. Even then the most they fluctuate is by 100-200 bucks. So, if you need it urgently, get it now. Else you can keep an eye on their site to net the best possible deal.

Guys, im still having trouble registering myself on the W7 free upgrade website.

Im able to validate my Service tag, and then choose the language for my W7. But when i click continue, it just became blank like this:

Lot's of users complained about this issue; since I bought my system way back, I'm not eligible for the free upgrade.
I guess the best you could do now is to give Dell a call.

There's a known issue with Dell QuickSet (at least for me and some Studio XPS 1640 users), it seems that every time when I use the Caps Lock key to change from upper case to lower case and vice versa, weird stuff happens:


When renaming files, hitting the Caps Lock will quit the renaming process; it's as if you just hit the Enter key while you're using the Caps Lock key.

Another scenario is when you're messaging someone, writing an e-mail or posting on forums with a web browser, hitting the Caps Lock key will inevitably bring out other windows previously minimized in you taskbar or shift the focus of the window to other windows. Again, it's as if you've hit the Alt-Tab combination keys while using the Caps Lock.


I find this annoying at best, at first I thought my Caps Lock key is broken; searching around with Google didn't yield any potential solution to this problem.

But today, I discovered the root of the problem: Dell QuickSet; as strange as it seems, this program has been causing me much pain over the past few months.

This morning, I released my frustration on the Caps Lock key. I depressed the Caps Lock key for a brief moment (while clenching my teeth in frustration) and I saw my web browser window blinking rapidly (like pressing the F5 key in the Explorer window to refresh your file list etc), then I thought maybe the Task Manager will show me which application/service is consuming the most CPU resources while I'm holding down the Caps Lock key. So I brought up Task Manager, depress the Caps Lock key and observe the CPU usage for each processes.

Lo and behold, Quickset.exe and Explorer.exe consumes the most amount of CPU resources with the Caps Lock key depressed. Quitting QuickSet solves the problem, finally.

So if anyone's Caps Lock key is acting very weird lately, give this solution a go.

Macro-ed Caps Lock? Cool... I haven't encounter anything like that but thanks for the heads up.. Also just curious, what does the quick set do? For me, the problem is, when I am gaming happily and changing the volume very often, a window will pop up saying Quick Set is not working and it close down immediately. After that my eject button for CDROM is not working d... cry.gif Any ideas what's happening? rclxub.gif

Yeah, that's what QuickSet does; controlling the CD/DVD eject button and displaying the volume/LCD brightness/WIFI/Bluetooth HUD.
Quitting QuickSet should prevent any further popups saying it's not working, but you won't be able to use the CD/DVD eject button.

For Dell Studio XPS 1340 users,

If you are experiencing computer lock-ups or freezes on your Studio XPS 13, it is recommended to update to the latest Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) and nVidia Video Driver.
Save any work and close all programs.

It is recommended that you add this link to your favorites or print the instructions out as this is a two part process that will require a restart of the computer.

The computer must be running on A/C power during this process.

For information on how to download and install drivers and updates, refer to Dell Knowledge Base article "How to Use the Drivers and Downloads Website" Article ID: 324722.

The BIOS update us under the Bios category and the nVidia Video Driver is under the Video category.

AFAIK no other effects. I used to run my computer without quickset, didn't notice other issues, other than brightness and volume indicator won't show up, and the eject button of course. Currently I'm running with Quickset on, causing some problem with Caps lock, but very rare it may become an issue. Somehow I wonder why the eject button is not working. I remember I'm able to use the eject button outside the windows interface, like Linux... and for my old XPS M1530, the eject button was also working without Quickset installed.

Just got my zalman NC 2000 last night, it's really worth tat price man~

I didn't using de temperature testing stuff - but i may feel it myself de temperature is significant decrease ~ Especially de front part (arm rest area + touch pad area)

Strongly recommend notebook cooler for SXPS 16 - Zalman NC 2000~

Erm, i didn't test on de CM-Infinity, but tell u wat - i happy with my zalman performance

I can't say it improve pc performance by reducing the heat, but at least i can feel the notebook is cooling down~

I don't wish my 4k++ notebook burn down~

I bough at RM195, where u get RM175?

using my laptop playing GRID just now. so not smooth.. sometime the FPS become so low till the game became so lag and sometime smooth again. it goes like smooth, suddenly lag, smooht, lag a while then smooth then...... make my mood of playing gone. can any pro tell whats wrong with it? using vista x64 sp1.

I have the Zalman NC2000 and also tried the cooler master infinite.. All I can say is that the Zalman still wins hands down because of full alumminiun surface on top providing a very good heat dissipation area for the bottom of the laptop and also there the holes as i mentioned b4... They are at the right place for our notebook as well.... thumbup.gif

hmm... this i what i call fps break down... i experienced b4 also.... and i'm now used back older gc driver and the problem solve...
how about your's other games?

But dell now upload a new gc driver d... i not sure can get back the old driver not... the name 'R219810'....
try go ati website there download the windows7 mobility radeon HD4000 driver... the name call '9-9_beta_win7_64_dd_CC'... i'm currently using... no fps break down probs....

I am planning to get a 16" from Dell this weekend but I noticed a couple of things:

1. It ran out of white color laptops, which are my favorite.
2. The OS now comes as 7 Home Premium 64 bit, how do I get a 32 bit regular 7 Home Premium?
3. I7 processors from 1.6Ghz boost to 2.80Ghz, is this even worth it? Despite the new CPU, new technology, havent got the time to research.

I bought 2 units of Dell Studio 15 from Lowyat before, I am wondering if they have any of these in white? Anyone might know?

I tried.. getting better but still when reach some part will crash a bit. a bit only.. not like last time crash till almost cant move.. now still can move just slow motion maybe for 2 or 3 sec? haha.. thanks

ok... but last time fps break down so often and very long right...? now acceptable d... last time i cant even ply call of duty 4 in 800x600 resolution... cuz the breakdown not related to setting or resolution... no matter how low you put the setting... the fps break down still there...

yup... last time used R227577, totally cant ply shooting games...
now i can ply Red Alert 3 with ultra high setting, 2xAA, 1920x1080... using a older driver...
and Resident Evil 5, 1280x720, On V-sync, with all high setting, my fps like around 30-55... i totally didn't feel like having fps break down...

hei that FPS crash gone.. wow.. amazing. the modtool works superb fine. after use that modtool my game become so so so smooth.. thanks..
But the FPS so low. 20 something like that when playing resident evil 5 just it become more stable only le..

Hata you know how to OC the ATI 4650 by using ATI Tool ?? I wanna try OC near to the actual clock for ATI 4650 but can not OC at all >.<

try at ur own risk... make sure ur room temp at 18-20 and u got the cooling pad direct blow to ur heatsink.. thank.. hahaha

Hey~ I thinking of getting the SXPS 16 for awhile now~ be4 i get it~ I use it mainly for gaming~ so should i get it in P8700 or the new i7??? Can u guys give me some suggestion??? some of u say i7 not too good for gaming is that true??? if it is~Should i just take the P8700 online & upgrading it too T9550 cost RM455. Total up RM4655~ Or just P8700 - RM4199 is enough for my gaming use?? OR the i7 is better????? icon_question.gif

P8700 is gud enuf...

the extra 0.13GHz is not going to make a lot of difference...

plus, P8700 consumes 10W less power than T9550 during load...

Erm may I ask in which setting did you guys play for Prototype? (For those who have)

I have 4GB of RAM with graphic card of 4670 but it seems to always have some minor 'lag' problem when there's whole bunch of mobs around.

Might wanna ask what could I do with it?

Take Alpine White, apply red lipstick and hey presto! You have a red colored laptop. Sick of the red? Wipe it all off with a tissue paper. Dual color laptop FTW.

On a more serious note, getting the i7 would really depend on the person. For me, i7 is godsend due to the fact many apps I use can take full advantage of its Hyper Threading capabilities.

But there is no more Alpine White~ cry.gif ~ Only red n black for now~ unless u take the i7 one or u so lucky find it in market~ ya depends on person~ i got not much use of it~ so P8700 will be enough for me~ smile.gif

I just installed Win7 on my 1640. 64bit. Dell website doesn't seem have alot of drivers for it for now.
