At least they still retain those nuances, but then again, they shoved too much flashback-flashforward scenes in an episode which sometimes can be confusing.

flash back/forward is VERY common in baccano/drrr first season.
however, it's done much better compared to this.

that said, ep4 should have resolved all of the issues first 3 episodes brought since they had to "re-introduce" all the characters again (which by no means is an easy feat. )
