Banks, commodity plays, offshore and marine companies set to post solid results

MORE than 500 Singapore Exchange-listed companies are due to announce their financial results for the year ended Dec 31, 2010, in the coming few weeks, and analysts are expecting significant profit jumps from the previous year on the back of a sharp economic rebound.




DBS Vickers Securities, for one, expects earnings for the companies it covers to rise by 20.4 per cent for FY2010, while HSBC believes that earnings for Singapore-listed firms could grow by 21.9 per cent. DBS had revised up its FY2010 earnings forecast by one per cent after the Q3 2010 results season.

Most companies lived up to market expectations for Q3 2010, even after analysts raised their forecasts. They now expect companies to report a good set of numbers for the full-year.

Local banks, which led earnings growth for Q3, are likely to end the year on a strong note. DBS Vickers expects banks to report a 30 per cent jump in earnings in FY2010. In Q3, they earned a combined $1.98 billion, up 31 per cent from the same period a year earlier.

Analysts also expect to see good earnings growth for most of the commodity plays. OCBC Investment Research noted in a report that the 'global economic recovery in 2010 has fuelled demand for commodities'. This has sent the benchmark Thomson Reuters/Jefferies CRB Index of 19 raw materials up by 17 per cent for 2010. High raw material prices are likely to contribute positively to the earnings of upstream commodity players.

Among those likely to see strong earnings are oil palm plantation owners like Golden Agri-Resources and First Resources, which are key beneficiaries of the surge in crude palm oil prices.

Commodity suppliers are also expected to benefit from the surge in raw material prices. Hong Kong-based Noble Group, for one, is expected to deliver a strong set of results for Q4, ending the fiscal year on a sweet note despite a poor first half. Kim Eng Research noted that Noble had a 'relatively weak' first six months, which was dragged lower by start-up costs for some of its projects. 'By Q3, things have returned to normal and we expect Q4 to wrap up a good FY2010,' said the broking house.

Offshore and marine companies are also expected to report strong earnings growth for the year.

'All shipyards had a fruitful 2010, hitting our order win assumptions,' said DBS Vickers. The sector also saw a good number of deliveries during the year. Rigbuilder Keppel Corp delivered 11 jack-up and semi-submersible rigs in total, while Sembcorp Marine made a total of nine rig deliveries comprising six jack-up rigs and three semi-submersible rigs.

The earnings reporting season will kick off about a week from now with the Keppel Group, with K-Green Trust reporting its results.

This will be followed by Keppel Land and parent firm Keppel Corp. Real estate investment trusts (REITs) will be early reporters, while the banks are expected to report late this month or in early February.

no wonder i cannot get aimsreit for the past two weeks ..... all speculating it earning will increase ? huh nvm just try to q see if can wait durian runtuh or not !!

Let's see if sunmart can cheong tomorrow.. Set my sell queue to 0.28 first

oh and i need to sell my Otto soon, this one on contra since i didn't sell my gensp in the end (although i wish i had sold since it's now lower than the price i wanted to sell on monday)...

yeah...i read thru a lot websites....like the edge singapore, etc...

since last month...a lot broker been calling a "buy call" on this stock....


lol.....

cut all my sunmart at a loss today... bought some wee hur instead.

only holdings are genting & wee hur for a bit of long term play... holding about 2 months possibly. won't be that active here anymore... it will save ppl from following me and losing money
