There's no limit to how long to feed fish oil...it's just a supplement anyways, so if you feel like your pup's coat is good and you want to stop, you can just stop feeding it. I feed Scottie everyday, but the thing to remember is to get fish body oil / salmon oil..NOT cod liver oil. Also, note that the dosage of the EPA + DHA should be around 300mg combined per capsule of 1000mg (you can find this on the bottle label). Feed this amount for every 15kg of your dog's weight.

Scottie is about 6-7kg, so 300mg of EPA + DHA is about all that I feed. The capsules I have are only 200mg EPA + DHA, so I give him and Kenji 2 capsules everyday.

Alternatively, if you find this very troublesome, you could get the MyBeau supplement from the pet stores. I've tried it with Scottie & Kenji and they do quite well on that too...just follow the instructions on how much to give per meal smile.gif

Oh, I didn't know you used human shampoo to bathe your pup...I think you should get a good dog shampoo instead of using human shampoo. Our skin and the dog's skin are quite different, so they might not take too well with human shampoo. Currently, I use the Pet Esthe Charcoal shampoo for Scottie...it's quite good, but a bit pricey (about RM60 per bottle - but this lasts Scottie for almost a year already). We've also tried the Spa brand...the smell is VERY nice, but it doesn't last so long as I wanted to. Still, Scottie didn't have any adverse reaction to it, so it's good enough smile.gif

Oic...where are you at now? You're not staying in KL?

I don't really have that much experience with shampoos and all. I've only tried the two brands I've mentioned so far, because one bottle usually lasts me about 1 year or so. Probably the only thing you could do is just try it out? A bit 'risky', but it's about the only way to know if it suits your dog, coz even though it might work for mine, it might not work for yours. Just a thought.

hi all. Wanna ask sumting. Do you all cover ur furkids wif blanket wen they sleep? Coz my fren said dogs are not afraid of cold and not necessary to cover them wif blanket but i sked they wil get cold at nite. P/s: my room dun hav aircon. Only fan
*
We don't have an AC at home also...Scottie and Kenji sleep in their play pen, but Scottie will sleep on the floor and Kenji MUST sleep on a cushion or the doggie bed. laugh.gif I've actually got a separate bed for Scottie, but he wouldn't sleep on it, so it's now Kenji's. LOL! Not all dogs are good with cold (Kenji is one of them...he cannot tahan AC. Whenever there's AC, he shivers like mad. laugh.gif )

QUOTE(Nitrous @ Nov 13 2009, 02:03 PM)
Hi guys
Nice to see all Min Schnauzer owners here. Me and my wife recently gotten a MS ourselves (we dont have kids), a 4 month old black and silver. So far so good, and he seems to be quite happy sleeping at our laps, and surprisingly not as active as his sister (we meet up with his sister's owner sometimes). I will post some pictures soon, it is not easy to catch a nice picture of him. It has been more than 10 years since both of our dogs passed on, so we are sort of learning the ropes again to raise a dog.

Anyway, I would like to ask the MS owners here, what food do you give your furkids? I m feeding him Nutram which is not great, and would like to switch to something better. I m getting a bit worried as he is losing some weight recently. I don't see anything wrong with him, as he laps up his food eagerly, and seems to be quite normal to us. I wanted to get him Innova Puppy food, but somehow I could not find a place that stocks that, including SS2 pet supplies. Can someone pls let me know where I can get it?

Appreciate your inputs..
*
Hi Nitrous, nice to meet you smile.gif I feed my dogs a raw diet, but previously I did feed Scottie kibble like Royal Canin and Nutri Edge, etc. I've tried Orijen for Scottie's puppies too, and they did quite well on it...perhaps you could try that smile.gif Or, if you would like to try raw, I'm helping my friend to sell her raw food (hehe, promote a bit tongue.gif) so if you would like to try that or want to know more about it, let me know smile.gif

Is it better to neuter?
*
The general 'consensus' amongst responsible owners would be to neuter our pets if we don't plan to breed them. Neutering / spaying our pets will reduce the risk of them getting cancer in the future (though it's not guaranteed) and also protects the dog(s) from unwanted pregnancy should they run off or you happen to have more than one dog in your home. If your dog is a male, neutering might help with marking (again, no guarantees as some neutered males still mark)...hope that helps!

I honestly have no idea if neutering would make a dog live longer...but I like to believe that a healthy dog is a dog that has a good immune system, and that comes from a balanced diet, some exercise as well as a body that's not pumped full of medication and what not. I guess it all depends on a dog's well-being. Neutering is not the 'magical cure' for a longer life...there are neutered dogs who get cancer too.

Well, a raw diet doesn't have to be fed when they are adults. I've alternated Scottie's puppies with kibble and raw since they were 6 weeks old, and they loved the food smile.gif But I don't want to force it on you if you're not keen...just want to let you know that raw is not just for adult dogs smile.gif

Audrey, haha.. sorry before callin u rayne tongue.gif ..

I see, yalo.. too expensive for 1 time hand strip even might not result in harsh and wiry coat.. maybe i try hand strip it by myself  smile.gif ...

Ya, can let me know where u sent scottie grooming.. o any nice saloon around KL...  nod.gif
*
LOL! No worries smile.gif

I guess you could learn how to strip yourself, but it's not that easy to do from what I've read. The tools itself are quite hard to find (most people import from overseas). Still, if you've mastered it, let me know...then I can learn from you! wink.gif

I send Scottie to Kuan Pet Salon in Kuchai Entrepreneurs' Park. Other grooming places that got lots of recommendation are like Pets Icon (NZX) and House of Groomers (they have a few branches). I have not personally sent Scottie there to groom, but since there are a lot of people who have been satisfied with their services, there sure has to be some quality there.

Audrey.. wanna ask u.. how long u took to fully housetrained scottie?.. my sam will go peepoo when i fence him (not so big area).. but hor, when i let him run whole area house definitely will accident happen one.. he wont go back peepoo at the appropriate spot i arranged... jus pee whenever he feel wan eliminate.. headache  ...
hmm.gif I can't exactly remember how long I took to housetrain Scottie, but it definitely took a while, because I wasn't consistent enough due to my classes' schedules and stuff. I've read that if we want to housetrain a pup, it needs CONSTANT supervision and very consistent reinforcement for about a week for the pup to be considered fully housetrained. But since I didn't do that, I took longer than that...maybe about a month or two. When you let Sam go and play, you need to supervise him also...don't just let him run around. When you see him showing signs of eliminating, quickly bring him to the place you want him to go and let him eliminate there. After a while of doing this, he should get the idea.

My friend and parents say i'm cruel for wanting to neuter Vodka. They said this will take something off from him. Am still struggling whether to neuter him or otherwise.... *sigh*
*
Yeah, my parents say the same thing for Scottie as well...I have yet to neuter him, but I am thinking about it. Looking for the right vet and saving some money for the surgery, coz I've heard quite a few horror stories about neutering gone wrong, so I'm looking for a trusted vet that has had many successful surgeries and no complaints. smile.gif

Max's dinner time is around 7 pm . At times, when there is nobody home , I will have to rush back to feed him b4 going out again 4 my own dinner.

Wat do u guys do in such circumstances ? Does anyone have one of those programmable automatic dog feeder.
*
Actually, it's okay to feed your pup at different times. That way, he won't be expecting you to feed him at the exact same time everyday (coz if you are too late, he might have vomit bile because his body was expecting food at the time and produce gastric juices for it). Feeding at different times makes it easier for us, and the dog learns to eat whenever there's food because they never know when the next meal will come. smile.gif It could be later or earlier, so they just eat whatever's been given to them.

I have not tried those programmable feeders, but they sound expensive.

I don't...but if Scottie's paws get too dirty (which is not often..I sometimes feel he's kind of a neat freak. laugh.gif ) I will wipe them down with baby wipes. Same goes to his beard.

I don't really know if baby wipes will cause allergies, but I usually get those without alcohol...and since babies naturally have quite sensitive skin, I figured it might be okay. Scottie didn't have any bad reactions to it, just that he doesn't like to be wiped...laugh.gif

You might want to test them on Max at the shop first before actually purchasing it...I initially thought of getting those doggie shoes for Scottie, but when I put them on him he refused to walk AT ALL. laugh.gif When I did eventually get him to stand up and take a few steps, the way he walked and the look he gave me was hilarious! I opted no for the shoes since...haha! But there are some dogs who eventually got used to it, so it depends on how determined you are, I guess wink.gif

20th Dec, I'm not sure if I can go...maybe next week or nearer to the date, I can confirm. Where are you guys planning to have this pot luck gathering? Also, is it an owners only gathering, or does it include the furkids as well? Pot luck means for humans only wan, or can include furkids' treats leh? smile.gif

QUOTE(yikhoe @ Nov 25 2009, 09:52 PM)
i'm feeding my MS around 2 tablespoon of kibble per meal... 2 meals a day. Not that enough i think but he's mostly staying at home and seldom exercise that much except for running around at home, so wanna train him to go with lesser food.

My friend does another ritual where he starve the dog once a week. Let them appreciate food and also better for health to cleanse their body.
*
How old is your pup? Sometimes it might not be enough to feed 2 tablespoons only. Even though the exercise level is not that high, the dog might still be undernourished if fed too little food...best is to touch and feel your dog's side. If it's too skinny, up the food a little. I seriously don't believe that feeding less will enable your dog's size to be 'small'. Size depends on the genes, and that comes from the parents...not from food.

And if your dog is still a puppy, it's not really that advisable to fast your dog, even though it's only once a week...puppies need a lot of nutrition to grow. Only fast your dog when they are adults as they are more stable then. My two cents' worth wink.gif

Oh, okay...like that, if we're including our furkids means we might have to go to the parks lo. More convenient coz there is ample space in the park. We can do like picnic style? Bring along some tikar or big plastic sheets so we can sit and eat smile.gif

If we're doing potluck, might I suggest that we make small portions of each food we're bringing? Let's say if the gathering has about 10 people, each person needs to make food for about 2-3 people only. If each of us make for 10 people, there will be too much food, and wasting...not to mention hard to bring. laugh.gif

For furkids' treats, anything that is edible will do la...if you don't want to make, just bring those commercial treats lo...or even order from the pet bakeries if you prefer something different smile.gif Again, if you plan to bring, don't bring enough for all, since there will be more than one person bringing the treats...smile.gif

If you're doing a picnic, light finger food would definitely be best...if bring heavy stuff like noodles and all, very troublesome because you'd have to bring plates, forks & spoons, etc. Finger foods like sandwiches, fries, nuggets, pastries, cakes, etc would be best lo smile.gif Think small and no need to eat using plate. laugh.gif Anyways, the gathering won't be so much on the food la..more on the owners getting to know each other and letting the furkids socialize, right? (That's what I was thinking anyways tongue.gif)

I would prefer Desa Park (coz I haven't been there) and maybe in the evenings (like 4pm or so). Not so hot then, but these days it's raining like crazy in the evenings, so... hmm.gif

But again, I'm not confirmed just yet laugh.gif If I can go, I will go regardless of time or place wink.gif So, you guys vote first la smile.gif

Hi there, welcome to the Min. Schnauzer thread smile.gif

Weight I think should not be a problem if the dog is healthy and active. Just because a dog is a little heavier than the standard size does not mean he is overweight. It is probably due to the genes. (maybe one or both of its parents are bigger sized than normal). No worries if your dog is a little bigger...as long as they're healthy, I think that should be more important smile.gif

You should feel the sides of the dog for a better gauge. If the dog is overweight, you would not be able to feel the ribs with a little pressure (kind of like pushing on a soft pillow). If he is underweight, you would be able to feel the ribs very quickly with a light touch. The 'ideal' situation would be applying a little pressure (again like the soft pillow) before feeling the ribs. smile.gif

Hi , Is it OK to send a 4 mth old MS for full grooming ? Dunno if the groomer was too bz and lied to me. She only did basic grooming and told to wait until 6 mths of age. She told me full grooming at 4 mths old would make the fur coarse !!!

(P/s And I see Tom's pic above with his head fully groomed)
*
Actually, doing a full groom on a Min. Schnauzer using clippers won't cause the coat to be coarse...on the contrary, it will be soft. The groomer probably doesn't really know much about the breed. The wiry, harsh coats that is the standard for Min. Schnauzers only come with hand stripping. So, no worries if you send your pup for a full groom smile.gif When I first got Scottie also, he was fully groomed already...the first time I sent him to the groomers also I think he was about 4-5 months old smile.gif
