To: 4evernelson:

My apologies if I hit your "sore spot". I was merely trying my best to provide some information to help ZeroWings. Remember a Chinese quote - "Ren bi ren, chi si ren" (If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter). I can empathize with you because once in a blue moon, I do compare with my good friends who are earning 7-figure annually - I do feel slightly inferior but my high-income buddies envy me instead (because I am currently doing something I enjoy and have financial freedom). With higher pay comes more RESPONSIBILITY and pressure. I do believe everyone has an equilibrium or "comfort zone" for work/life - for me, even if I have skills/brains for a 7-figure job, I CANNOT "tahan" the pressure for long.

You are still YOUNG, bitterness and jealousy can be a stumbling block in life. If you pay is slightly below par, ask and motivate yourself to earn more. Remember to gain relevant experience and network. The -+2.5k quote is a common pay range for M'sian banks/FIs. As zydoce correctly pointed out, many factors are in play. As I grow older, I realize some things in life can be explained but a lot of things CANNOT be. I am not a HR specialist but I do know the employment market is NOT a perfect market.

You may wish to read the following article:
http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/index.p...n-hiring-spree-
(even for entry-level banking jobs can range from S$2,600 to S$8,000. I personally know young graduates can earn more than S$10,000 in bulge-bracket IBs. Remember the high-paying ones are only a handful, thousands are earning around S$2,500 and thousands are STILL looking for a JOB!).

Pls cheer up...

First of all, your question is NOT silly.

As a fresh graduate, your gross pay in M'sia will not be much: probably around RM2500-3000 (btw, financial controllers are EXPERIENCED position, not for fresh grad.) If your degree is from LSE (is it an external programme?), getting a decent job in the finance sector is not too difficult, subject to the economic/sector situation. First few years, do not expect to earn too much. The JUMP comes after you get a few years (3 to 5) of experience and effective networking. Some guys who are more "gung-ho"and capable can earn more than 10k after that (but that's minority). Generally, more than 5k after 5 years.

Pay in Singapore is definitely MUCH better than M'sia but the competition is stiffer as well. There are plenty of M'sians in Singapore finance sector.

To get an indication of pay:
http://hubpages.com/hub/singapore-salary-guide
http://www.kellyservices.com.my/web/my/ser...alaryguide.html

Please bear in mind some of the survey data may be skewed and some are on the high side (Michael Page and Robert Walters are executive "head-hunters"). Generally, the pay in Singapore is much better than M'sia (1S$:2.4 ringgit and much lower personal tax rate). Wondering how come I know? - I have worked more than 15 years in the financial industry in S'pore, Msia and etc...now semi-retired - relatively free enough to offer some help in LYN.

Sorry for being naggy (that's the problem of growing old). Do get experience, LEARN, have a GOOD attitude to work. Find something you really like and $$$ will come along (interest + hard work are impt factors for success).

Since you need to take care of your younger siblings, $$$  is impt but pls do not overlook your long-term development plans and interest as well. Cheers... smile.gif

not silly? biggrin.gif

hmm, i had expected gross ard 2k-2.5k though, i did a tiny research on salary in this line for fresh grads b4.

so if financial controller is for experienced ppl, what can i actually apply upon graduating?

yes LSE is external, i cant afford to go to the LSE in UK though, tat's way too expensive. Cost wise, this external programme is just the thing i want.

i asked some frens in this line b4, normally 5 years is needed, tat's why im thinking to take CFA in the first 5 years, as CFA required 4 years to receive the charter. btw, wat's gung-ho? my dialects not well LOL. of coz i do aim for the minority but wil not pin too high hopes. 5k+ after 5 years looks fine to me as my parents (50+ and 40+) is earning sum of 10k monthly.

izit hard to go into SG's finance sector? graduated frens encourage to go to SG, as the pay and other benefits is better than MY.

its not naggy, im here bcoz i wanna infos and advice, talk more = more info which is good for me. tongue.gif

anyway, thx for the infos. goodluck and happy new year

CFA designation can only be used if you have worked in a relevant industry for a certain number of years.

If your finance industry is on banking, then the fresh grad pay is close to 3k or more. But if you are talking about back office finance, that's a different story.

I might have stated somewhere about front office and back office before. You should really have a very clear understanding about this before applying for any job positions. The reason why im doubting you is because you're talking about CFA and Finance controller job as if they are similar in nature.

400 increment after working just 8 months is not underpaid..work for at least 1yr if you really want to leave, 8months experience will do no good in your resume.

Actually I receive the letter for increment, it's suppose to be on February. But after I told my manager that I'm leaving soon (after finishing the HK project), then she trying to hold me by talking to HR manager to increase it on december.
She told me after her maternity leave (somewhere end of february) and will try to increase to 2500 again.
Yes I do know at least 1 year experience is important, I will leave it either end of my contractual period or 1~2 month later.
But somehow I think.. 2500 it's like too few to me for after working for 1 year. A little bit regret because last year before I start working, I got offered 2500 from head hunter to work in Intel but I refused (heard a lot of bad news like headhunter rarely increase your salary)

Yes annual salary, that's my main point of leaving because once MNC do provide bonus if you are permanent.
and also I planned to move to a job that are more to software security area which will be my main interest (but it's rarely to find these job, especially in penang)

I have a question
- If I have an offer from head hunter while they provide salary that I want with bonus, do you think I should go for it (Might have a chance to get converted to permanent or there might be a risk that sometime the job I got offered will never have permanent)

Comments are appreciated.

If you were REALLY headhunted, you have bargaining power. I'm sceptical if you really know what the term means.

What he is tring to say has nothing to do with his qualification and educatio level.

He is merely pointing out the justification of salary range for fresh grads. Assume that he has the same education level and qualification with his peers yet he has only less than RM2.1k.

Improving his skills or not is one case, the existing bias and dissimilarity of salary range among the same qualifications is another case.
