Hi, I would like to know how would the procedure of payment/contract is like when you do freelance in the advertising industry?
*
From my experience, I haven't seen contractual jobs because for all freelance jobs in advertising industry, normally they will pay by project base, not contract base.

For Project base jobs, it could be translation, copywriting, artwork design, editing etc. There are mainly 2 ways of payment mode:
1. 50% down payment upon confirmation, subsequently 50% upon submission of final work
2. 100% full payment upon final work

You may consider to adopt option 1 if the advertising agencies that you work with are new agencies or small agencies that you work with for the first time. Reputable agencies are fine, they will keep promise and punctual in payment.

SGD2.8k for 3 years experience is too too too too low.
Even fresh grad (Singapore uni) get that amount.

Obviously they pressed your salary because you are considered as foreign workers like bangla or indon....

1. Is it because your cousin owns a tuition centre and that's why he earns RM15K? Impossible to earn this figure if he is working part-time as tuition teacher.

2. Yes. Hawkers, fishery industry do earn lucratively. Moreoever, they earn CASH money EVERYDAY, aka how much you sell today, how much you earn today.

I am not sure how exactly the figure work out...for the tuition teaching cousin...
Lets say 1 student per subject is RM35. Each student take 3 subjects on average.
that's RM105 per student

i class, he can accomodate 30 students-> 40x105= RM4200
3 classes= 3 xRM4200= RM 12600?

rmb? he is popular...
the point here is to tell u all that a tuition teacher and fish monger can be very damn rich.....

Teaching music won't really will be rich. Only if you are famous. Then can demand higher fees & alot of student.

Remember teaching music is mostly one on one. How many student you have in a day it count.

If average RM100 fees per student per month for 30 minute. 1 day average teach 6hours for 5 day.

6hours/0.5hr X RM100 X 5days = RM6000.

But you must have 60 student to make up the figure. Which quite few teacher have that much student.
Average teacher will only have 20-40 student at most.

If you teach house from house, the teaching time will be half.
*
Teaching house to house will be included petrol charge according to students' house. But no doubt the time allocated for house-to-house teaching will be gone down to half. However, piano fee for classical music is standard, I'm doubt if there's any possibility to demand higher according to teachers' fame.

But yes, the higher qualification the teacher is, the higher fees he/she can demand. Just like normal Grade 8 teacher and Diploma holder teacher charge differently.

Music teacher teaches pop music, jazz music other than classical music, and pop/jazz music fees are double more expensive than classical music!

Is it that teaching Pop/Jazz are more expensive? Didn't realise that.

I'm use to be a Classical Guitar teacher, pop are quite easy, & no need special skill & technique. So I charge same rate as Classical. Only thing trouble is Pop song available for guitar are limited, you need to arrange it for student.

Anyway teaching music not as that easy & can earn a lot, my friend full time teaching Violin in Yamaha, most student are beginning to Grade 3. Although the school assign all Violin student to him, but still only have 20+ student. Teach during Thursday to Sunday. So far the paid not >2k.
*
Yes, pop and jazz music do charge at higher fees.

Classical music lessons need attention and more stressed cos parents expect their children take exam but somehow students are lazy, failed the exam and parents can push the blame on you.

I prefer teach pop music, less pressure and more pleasure cos most of the students are adults, easy to teach! thumbup.gif

Ha ha.. it seem we discuss in the wrong topic. Anyway is nice to meet people who know & teach music. You teach in music school or house to house?
Of course, teaching pop is quite relax, no technical stuff to teach. Some more in some level just teach them how to arrange song like organ/keyboard player do. Just learning accompany & chord is enough. But normally pop song student won't be long term as compare to exam base student. They can learn when ever their sweet time, but exam student sure will bind to you till the exam over. Of course, a bit stress, but sure you can know whether they can pass or not before the exam. So just honestly tell the parent the student situation & confidentiality level.

For me, Teaching music is just as a hobby, may be a sub-income. It never can replace my main profession (Accounts & Finance)
*
Yes, pop song students are not learning for long term but at least they take the initiative to look for pop music lessons and they practise as what instructed. Exam based students are normally taking classes just to fulfill parents' order.

I'ld rather go for pop music students anyway.

ic ic, maybe piano are very popular which have alot of people want to learn, so you dun mind of losing student, & lot of nice pop song compare to Classical Guitar. And a lot of people have wrong impression between Classical & Acoustic Guitar. So I always emphasize to classical then pop in my teaching. Thus, Classical Guitar student will be not so popular, & most student are from 10-20 years old. Rarely have 5-10 years kids learning Guitar.
*
5-10 years old kids need special small guitar, which is more expensive.

Yes, i don't mind my adult students come and go. I enjoy having classes with students who have the heart to learn, than those who merely to fulfill parents' order but stick to me for long term.

What he is tring to say has nothing to do with his qualification and educatio level.

He is merely pointing out the justification of salary range for fresh grads. Assume that he has the same education level and qualification with his peers yet he has only less than RM2.1k.

Improving his skills or not is one case, the existing bias and dissimilarity of salary range among the same qualifications is another case.
