guys, help me decide, im in a real big dilemma here
i love n really want to get the AF-S 50mm f/1.4
but yesterday went outing shooting whole day i used my fren's 55-200
at 55mm really hard to take portraits, had to stand very far back
so shud i get the the 35 f/1.8 instead?
but for some reasons i feel dun like the 35mm, like short of somethg to the 50mm
maybe is just my thinking

Btw to those who were asking, yeah it's true many would compare the Di866 with the SB-600, I did too, mostly because of the pricing. But u need to understand dat the Di866 was designed as a n alternative to the SB-900, so the specs are higher than the SB-600.

So far from what I've tested, I'm pretty happy with it, the build quality's fine imho, possibly not as good as the SB-900 but u get wat u pay for. the output is really powerful, but I'm still trying to get the hang of it (my mistake for rushing into event dis week wif it).

my suggestion is test both the Di866 and the SB-600 before u decide. if the SB-600 suits your needs, just go for it wink.gif
*
so far no problem?
i heard many from PhotoMalaysia forum that their Di866 sometimes unable to iTTL with cam
biggest problem with Di866 is still got error when trying to CLS with SB-900

is best if u go for Nikon own lenses, u cant go wrong with them
unless budget constraint la, but with your budget u can afford it
with your budget, got 2 lenses i can only think of
55-200mm VR & 70-300mm
between these 2, i say take the 55-200 as it got VR which is important for 'long' lenses
there's 70-300mm VR, but that costs RM1.9k
maybe u can save cash for the moment n go for the 70-300 VR instead

guys, 1 thing to ask...is about filter...should i get cheap uv filter or hoya pro1d uv filter?? i am confusing...
*
cheapo UV filters oso work actually, cos UV filters work primarily as lens protector, not to protect from UV rays or watsoever
sometimes UV filters give problems more than helping, especially flares
the more expensive branded UV filters have less tendency to cause flares but they are not perfect...

so the point is uv filter is just act as a lens protector and no nid to buy expensive 1??
*
its up to you
not to say expensive 1 r useless n no difference from cheapo 1
but not really worth spending much on expensive UV filters
rather buy other kinds of expensive filters such as Polarizer
but if u r having loads of cash n no way else to spend it, by all means, go ahead n buy, haha laugh.gif

*
he compare with D40 cos have big generation gap i think
bcos IMO, there's ntg much to compare between D3000 n D60
the 2 r basically the same with major parts n functions r the same, including the sensor
only difference is D3000 got the new guide mode
other than that, u cant compare much between D60 n D3000's IQ
so maybe thats y Ken compare with the ol' D40 laugh.gif

normally focusing motor in lens r quieter than body motors
n Tamron is known for its slower focusing speed than other brands
but IQ produced by Tamron r 1 of the best thumbup.gif

maxh3h3: you wana get 17-50 f/2.8 so that you can shoot in low light? what lens are u using? 18-55 or 18-105? my advise is to make full use of ur lens first...
fyi, f/2.8 will not help VERY much in low light. perhaps faster focusing...

f/2.8 allows u to shoot at 1~2 stops faster than ur kitlens (depending on wha aperture u use). the VR in ur lens already allow you to shoot 3-stop slower adi.....if u want 1750 because of the optics then i would say try both, but if u want it just because of the f/2.8, i would say think twice

i used 1750 on canon before, noisy and focusing is pretty slow, the nightmare is the QC of that lens, heard of its back/front focusing problem? mine was ok initially then the problem came after few weeks...very bad back focusing...

*
i think i agree hmm.gif
lower aperture enable u to shoot few stops slower, but VR can do that too rite?
so is best get a lens which has both low aperture + VR or similar tech thumbup.gif
but pricetag... whistling.gif

maybe Tamron got more 'feel' than Sigma bcos of weight? brows.gif
we photographers normally like to say heavier feels better, example D3 or add battery grip laugh.gif
maybe Tamron lenses heavier than Sigma cos of heavier or extra optic glass inside?

LOL laugh.gif

sorry, missed out your that post notworthy.gif
bokeh too shallow, but if u r using kitlens, thats the limit i think
1 way to counter this is get closer to the subject
what focal length u used?

btw, is it jz me, or is the plant green color feels a bit dull?

4.0? If I get closer, I won't be able to cover all of it. It is dull aight laugh.gif I didn't edit it at all, just snap, upload, resize and upload blush.gif
*
i mean focal length, or zoom length, not aperture
but since u said aperture is 4.0, i guess u were using around 20-40mm
1st rule to create nice bokeh with non-constant aperture lens,
is to use highest zoom with lowest aperture
try using 55mm n aperture 5.6 which is minimum
u'll get nicer bokeh

yes, u can create bokeh too at 18mm with f/3.5
but higher focal length gives greater depth of field
how to explain this... hmm.gif
when u zoom in on your subject, u r isolating it from background, creating bigger bokeh
u can stand closer to your subject at 18mm but the impact is not that great
there's a reason y higher focal length prime lenses r more wanted by ppl
price tag oso higher...

add-on*
focal length n aperture r dependent on each other to create bokeh
i'll say even 55mm f/6.3-f/8 create bigger bokeh than 18mm f/3.5
correct me if im wrong

QUOTE(silver_de_gene @ Oct 16 2009, 03:30 AM)
general:

hmm, what u said does make sense. i found a book title 'digital photography' says this about depth of field

there are 3 elements that control depth of field.

1) aperture : changing the size of the lens aperture radically alters the amount of the scene, from foreground to background, which is captured in focus

2) focal length of the lens : the longer the focal length, the narrower the depth of field

3)focusing distance: the closer the subject is to the lens the narrower the depth of field increases

i'm quite confused in 2) and 3). is focal length of the lens meaning zoom in and out where focusing distance is how close the distance between u and the subject? let's say, i have a wide aperture and should i zoom in for more bokeh or should i move closer to the subject? as i know, u can't do both right? err, can anyone help?
*
u can zoom in or move closer to subject at the same
covering majority of the frame with your subject can create greater bokeh

60mm = rm 2,000.00

third party lens to be consider
