ideally, you wouldnt want any intermediate in DAC world. each time the signal is passed through another device, expect some degradation. of course, it doesnt matter much to normal/casual end users.

some cheap hdmi cables (especially the long ones) cant carry 1080p signal properly

patches/updates are normally downloaded direct during game booting, bypassing psn store.

the psn store downloads are normally for expansion packs/dlc.

and both patches & dlc are possible to be installed using proxy as long as they are in .pkg format.

the ps3 needs to be online to initiate the patching. the first post of this thread outlines proxy app. ctrl+f, and search for proxy. it is possible in traditional LAN + WAN environment and i suppose it is also possible in ICS (ps3 piggybacking on pc's internet connection).
