QUOTE(loritanah @ Aug 21 2009, 09:00 AM) boss.. There are mainly 3 reasons why we don encourage people to use coconut shell.what the different by using coconut shell and sleeping pouch... i am no against ppl used coconut shell for their gliders..but its kind a primitive.. As what cottonkandy and yueyi mentioned above, but i jus wan to elaborate more. 1) Stain - Your glider will turn brownish. Is normal for glider to change color to faded black or brownish when they grow elder or when you put two glider together. However, using coconut shell will not only stain the upper coat but also the stomach hair. - Sometimes it's bit hard for us to differentiate whether a brown color glider is because of other species? stained? or it's red color series glider? - But stained glider will hav dull dark brown color, while the natural brown color will be shinnier. 2) Bacteria/Hygiene - As yueyi mentioned, is very hard for us to clean the coconut thoroughly. Jus imagine, using water only to wash the coconut shell, definitely it would not clean everything because the shell absorb the urine.. And bacteria will started to grow from time to time because the urine stays underneath the coconut fibre. - You might suggest to use disinfectant or dettol to clean in order to kill all the bacteria. But think again, the coconut fibre absorb liquid and it's really hard to clean/rinse. What if the dettol or disinfectant you used stay within the fibre, and what would happen if ur glider chew it? - Coconut shell can be a good habitat for bacteria and at the end of the day bacteria infection will happen esp on female's pouch. Not to forget other parasites such as mites or protozoa. 3) Shell Protective/Defensive - As ck mentioned, glider wil become more shell protective. I nid to clarify that when u use both coconut shell or pouch, the glider will also tend to be shell/pouch protective. - The difference here is HOW you get the glider out of the shell/pouch. - For coconut shell, you definitely nid to put ur hand in and catch them or u hav to take the whole shell out and pour them out. Imagine, u r sleeping and suddenly a big giant hand comes in from the only window in ur room and catch u..scary, huh? End up ur glider will be more and more stress and defensive.. - For pouch, is much easier for us to take glider out. Jus squeeze them from bottom slowly. Or you can hold the pouch and let the glider feel ur temp, smell or etc first before take them out.. - Therefore, toothpaste squeezing method will gradually reduce their fear and defensive bahavior, they slowly learn you r nt danger. But, using shell will slowly increase their fear and make them more defensive, because from time to time u jus keep stressing them up. Other criteria such as comfortableness, safeness (fibre may poke female pouch) or etc shud put in consideration too. We can use polished coconut shell as decoration or toy.. but for sleepin purpose i will prefer to stick with pouches.. |

From now onwards, i only get glider from those who feeding HPW diet. Therefore i don hav to reintroduce new diet.. my point is just that u make sure u get from a responsible, trust worthy and good seller about the items..i got most of mine online..like wodent wheel, hammock and pouches |

QUOTE(myself_lsm @ Aug 21 2009, 11:41 PM) Hi, Eric and every Suggies Lover here. I have been follow this thread for long time already but never participate in discussion until recently I'm becoming one of the Suggies owner too. Hi, welcome to the thread.I took over from my friend which is unable to keep them anymore. I don't know the origin of the Suggies but I hope it is not from the Breeder from Penang coz the way he treat suggies as breeding machine is sick! My fren just told me he got from Pet Shop. Ok, Let me introduce my Suggies 1.Orkid (female, 1 year +) 2.Money(female, 1 year +), hey eric, didn't mean to copycat your princess money, she was named by gf's mother 3.Junior (male, less than one year). Introduce to the gang a bit later after my fren found out Orkid and Money are gal We have been taking care of them for 3 weeks already, so far succesfully bonding with Money, while the other 2 still in progress. Initially we feed them apple, papaya and seedless grape. ( i just realized grape is harmful to them, so we stopped.) I feed them with HPW with Manuka Money and Gliderade from Pet Shack, and fresh apple, honey dew, carrot, papaya. We encounter one problem now, Junior's tail now become bald. I thought after we feed them HPW, it should become furry and chubby a not the other way? izzit some kind of transformation due to the change of food intake? As I know, previous owner only feed fruits and Meal worm. anyone also encounter something like this b4? mind to share? Good to hear u r feeding on the correct and good diet. Ok, let me try to answer since i personally experienced the same situation b4. There are few possibilities that causes of bald/hair dropping tails, or usually we said over-grooming. Is it only happen to junior? What bout the other two gliders? Do you see them scratchin their body very frequent? If yes, then most probably it's because of mites. It could due to hygiene of living environment or passed from previous breeder/owner. For now, you need to send to experienced vet for check up. The vet will scrap the skin of ur glider and see whether there is any mites or not. If mites are found, medicine will be prescribe or injection will be done. If it's not because of mites, it could be their psychological status that affects them. Imagine, i feed you plain rice for few months, i am sure u feel life is meaningless and bored right? This could be the way Junior reflects and deliver his feelings. How long hav you feeding on hpw? and what cage are u using? |

QUOTE(myself_lsm @ Aug 22 2009, 12:21 AM) Yup, it only happen to junior, while the other 2 seem ok. i have been feeding HPW for 2 weeks already. But i know they like it very much coz every morning the plate will be empty. 3ft cage for 3 adult gliders is definitely too small... The space for them to roam and active is so limited..T0TI'm using 3 feet cage, have a wodent wheel, sleeping pouch, toys, hammock...and some sticks for them to climb. Actually I did saw once Junior straching it's body to Wodent Wheel wall. And most of the time it like to strach it body, like wad dog use to do. i tot is normal for him. I never have a chance to see clearly the condition of Junior coz it seem don't like to be grab. I don't know what is the condition of previous owner, but we do cleaning often. basically we have 2 sleeping pouch and 2 hommock, we will interchange the pouch weekly while we clean the cage thoroughly 2 weeks. U clean ur cage every 2 weeks? Mayb can try clean once a week... because sometime when they eat they will spit here and there, then the pee and poo will stick on the cage bars too.. The dirt may not be seen clearly but actually it's kinda dirty, esp u hav a male there. My advice for u would be go for vet check asap, and change a BIGGER cage, at least 4ft. @Nezu, so nice the photos~~~ They are lucky to hav you~~ Yeah yeah, coat shine oil is really nice... their fur bcome thick thick and padat padat.. |

Actually we can feed those crums to the mealies.. not a big prob.. Sometime, i also feed the leftover cat kibbles from kenken to the mealies.
Ofcourse, vege/fruits are still the main food for the mealies. Premium Glider Diet is dry staple, u can leave inside the cage for days. |

QUOTE(darkkecik @ Aug 25 2009, 04:59 PM) eric~ lately after i gave the milk for my glider. my glider not really eat something. i put fruit that i always give but my glider just ignore it. Observe her this few days.. It could be changes of diet that makes her loses appetite. But sooner she will cope up and back to normal. my glider just drink a little bit milk that i gave to and then goes to sleep back. i`m worried if my glider really dont eat the fruits. ermm i have another question. 1. can i just feed milk for the glider? 2. if the milk did not finish, can we just leave it inside their cage ? You can leave the milk at night, then discard the leftover on second day morning. Or else, morning feed the milk, then night time serve fruits and vege. Your glider is still very young, she cant stuff so much foods in her stomach at one time.. If she doesnt want to drink the milk, then u hv to syringe her. |
