Anyone has reviewed this? Will Philips have a plasma version of this? And how will it affect the 'normal ratio-ed' videos? Will it be stretched?
The Ambilight sounds cool, though

Billed as the first TV to have a true cinema aspect ratio - 21:9. No more horizontal black bars for your DVDs/BDs!

If you watch 1.78:1 film on this thing, it is either stretched to full screen or you view at the native ratio but have black bars at the side.

Quite many movies are actually 1.85:1 or even 1.78:1 aspect ratios. So, with this new TV, instead of letterbox, we'll get pillarbox. Then we'll still hear people complaining about those black bars on the sides. It'll get even worse for 1.33:1 frame.
I think the current 1.78:1 ratio for TV is the best compromise, not too wide for 1.33:1 and not too narrow for 2.40:1. |

Apapulak split two screens? You guys for real?
Anyone experienced the ambilight in existing Philips model where the LEDs behind the panel light up in reference to the current picture to give it a more, err..., 'extended' viewing? Great thing about 21:9 is you get exactly the 'full screen' size for most movies. For 16:9 TVs, you normally get a much reduced view size than your actual screen size, barring zooming. Philips is bringing in only the 56". RM20K!!! |

20K is because it has a whopping 2,560 x 1,080-pixel screen (that’s better than normal HDTVs with 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution), 200Hz refresh rate, five HDMI inputs and uses a CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) backlight.

QUOTE(piscesguy @ Jul 23 2009, 09:26 PM) LED is better in terms of energy efficiency, lighting consistency, but more expensive due to the limited use compared to the more mature CCFL lighting. Thats what I thought, thus wondering why Philips would use that instead of LED. Well, cost is a factor, I know.Or could this be just something they need to push out in the market first (since they are falling behind the Japanese in terms of TV hype) until they fully develop their LED backlits? |

QUOTE(mpyw @ Jul 24 2009, 04:32 PM) wait untill you wanna read those sub-title in the black bar previously.... I read somewhere last week that Philips just released a new BD player that would allow you to place your subtitle anywhere on the TV screen (bottom, top, middle, anywhere you like) ... it's not hardcoded anyway (that's why you can on and off it and change language also). This completely solves the issue with people opting for full cinemascope (2.35:1) or CIH - constant image height (2.20:1) screen format. sweet it's hard coded into that and won't show up in the picture if you watch 2.35:1 lots of complaint from those elite pj owner watching at this ratio |

Showcased at the KL AV Fair, first impression is - darn wide! Must get used to it. I suppose it is necessary to have sufficient viewing distance unless you want to develop yr neck muscles.
The Ambilight - it changes proactively with the BG and the response time is fast! Though how much it increases your viewing pleasure in the long run, I dunno. The demo place is too bright IMHO to really appreciate/test the Ambilight. |

I feel that although the idea is good the practicality is not there...how many hours a day wud u spend watching BD & how many on Astro? For me it's probably 20-80 so if it's only good for 20% of time then it's probably not worth it.
I'd really be interested to see the stretched output when playing Astro..see Nadal or tall van der sar turned into hobbits... |

No more rubbish red/green 3D nonsense. (well, thats what I am hoping anyway Back to the Philips, I believe for RM20K a pop, those who buy will use it for dedicated HT rooms for movie watching ONLY. |
