I haven't done much research on the SingTel sets but what's the price difference like between this 3GS and the 3G a year ago?

It's a 24 month contract and the prices are almost the same as last year's 3g except more plans.

Anyway, for existing iphone user the upgrade is so expensive which is 600. I am currently in this dilemma and paying 600 does not terminate your previous contract but it runs concurrently.

So if let say i stop working in Singapore before next year August, then its gonna cost me 800+800 for those 2 contracts.. crazy.. u've already payed the 600 now.

Really in dilemma. Maybe i'll skip this one as the jump from 3g and 3gs are not that much.

@pikaphebat,
Hence, in order to upgrade U need to fork out an additional S$600?! If it's RM600 it's pretty worth it smile.gif I bite the bullet and am enjoying my 3G [s] v muchie biggrin.gif

The Singtel 3GS sets' price plans are OK for non-existing 3G users since they are pretty much the same as last year's 3G price, however, they are RIDICULOUS to current 3G owners as they have to pay SGD600+handset price if they are between 6-12 months within the contract (obviously all Singtel 3G owners are in that area as it was launched on 22nd August 2008) and SGD300+handset price if they are between 12-21 months within the contract.

Im off this time. SGD600 as a penalty for existing iPhone 3G customer! That's what they call "valued customer"!

@k3v1n,
Might as well just wait for Maxis to release. Based on keynote presentation it's not going to be too long; we're in the same wave as NZ & Singapore so wait it out just a little longer biggrin.gif

@diners,
You're not allowed to ask or even speak about when Maxis is bringing it here cause we're all merely speculating. Once an official announcement been made, teikwing will update his thread or start a new one biggrin.gif

If this is so, why don't you just wait for maxis launch? Are you going to pay SGD20+ per month (I assumed you signing the cheapest plan) without even using it for 24 months?

If u could hold on the temptation, just hold back the purchase as the termination is kinda hefty, $600 x 2.45 = RM1470 and provided that ur contract has lapsed more than 6 mths.

Unless ur existing 3G can fetch better value and if u got the 1st phone at nominal price.. but then again, if that's what ur required to pay ($600 only) for termination for the remaining contract period, it's worth considering to purchase the new phone and your contract will be reset back to 24.

Your money, you decides.

If ur not using it in Singapore, then no point for u to sign their plans. I'm not sure whether ur allowed to sign their plan unless ur holding PR / Work Permit / Employment Pass / Student Pass.

If u forget about the price plan (call rates & monthly commitments) you get the 32GB under iOnePlus @ $848 x 2.45 = RM2078!!! it's still cheaper compared to what current Maxis packages. right?

Singtel didn't offer any outright / prepaid packages for the previous model and right now, there's no news of it too. But there are dealers selling the previous model outright at their shop. A friend of mine bought one (16GB) few months back at around RM3000.

@Tink,

According to this site, Straitstimes Singapore

New iPhone cheaper

excerpt:

THE NEW Apple iPhone 3G S, which goes on sale this Friday, will cost less than its predecessor, and those who bought the earlier model will be allowed to trade it in for the new handset.

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), the handset's exclusive local distributor, on Monday announced that the iPhone 3GS will be given free to those who sign up for its $205 a month mobile plans, while those on its new low-end $39 a month plan will pay $678.

Last August, SingTel sold the iPhone 3G for up to $848, and in light of how well it had done - it sold more than 100,000 iPhones - industry observers had expected that it would sell the new model for around the same price.

Another piece of good news: SingTel will offer iPhone 3G users who have been its customers for at least six months to upgrade their handsets. They will have to pay between $200 and $738, depending on plan and the handset. Their contract lengths will also be 'reset' to 24 months.

SingTel is also cutting the price of the 8GB iPhone 3G to $398, making it 'one of the lowest entry prices for touchscreen smartphones', said SingTel spokesman Chia Boon Chong.

While 'there are still a lot of iPhone fans out there' willing to pay any price for the latest Apple offering, Mr Foong King Yew, technology analyst firm Gartner's research director for carrier operations and strategies, said SingTel likely decided to lower prices in response to recession-hit pursestrings.

Meanwhile, the upgrade offer is to keep its original iPhone customers happy so they stick with it, rather than giving them a reason to switch to a competitor, something especially important for companies operating in mature, competitive industries like mobile telecommunciations, he said.

Well, if the price plan is in RM, best giler!!!! thumbup.gif

@jonest,
The trade-in doesn't seem v worth it. Maxis has something similar too but am not sure if it'll be applicable for the 3GS when it reaches our shores.

My take is still that if U have to pay so much $ and sign a plan of 24 months instead of getting it outright, might as well wait for Maxis n get it from Maxis.

@tink

I do have a similar feeling since I can't sign plan with singtel unless I get it from their dealers in which the price would higher. My friend bought his 16gb 3G @ $1150 @ 2.45 = RM2800. It's cheaper than maxis but I'm sure dealers will take advantage this time.

I'm not sure which info is the correct one.

I called Singtel Customer Service, she mentioned that $600 is not for terminating your previous contract but to purchase the new iphone with your existing contract running which have another $800 penalty.

If it's $600 and terminate the previous contract then maybe i'm good coz if not, it's 800SGD to terminate it.

Just received email from singtel stated early upgrade fee for those signed during last year august been reduced t0 $300 from previous $600.

Doing the maths now:

Choosing the iFlexi Lite,

Monthly fee @ $39
iPhone 3GS 16GB @ $548
and $100 discount if upgrade to iFlexi price plan from existing price plan.

So $300+$548-$100 = $748

i'll get back the 16GB iPhone but 3GS. and i'll need to dispose my current white 16GB to offset the price im going to pay. wat's u guys think? worth it? How much could I sell my current white 16GB iphone?

i'll get back the 16GB iPhone but 3GS. and i'll need to dispose my current white 16GB to offset the price im going to pay. wat's u guys think? worth it? How much could I sell my current white 16GB iphone?
*
If the penalty is just $300 only, I'll go for it but don't trade in the phone coz the value is way below the fair trade value you can get (unless ur existing iPhone 3G is BUSTED!!!

at $748 - xxx (sell off value of 3G) - that's what ur paying... cheers

Added on July 7, 2009, 11:36 pmI need a confirmation for the penalty so I could update the first posts.

Thanks

Hi XXX,
Yesterday I wrote to you to let you know about the iPhone 3GS launch in Singapore.
An early upgrade fee of $600 applies to customers upgrading to the iphone 3GS.
To reward early adopters who bought their phone in August 08, we will be extending an early upgrade fee of $300 (on a 24 mth contract) specially to you if you come to our launch event this weekend (10 -12 July 2009).
We appreciate you are keen to get the new iPhone 3GS and we have introduced this special upgrade offer just for you!
For more details about our offers please visit www.singtel.com/iphone
Regards,

@IODATA,
I'll just sprinkle fairy dust around the package so when customs do open it, they don't see anything biggrin.gif

@mONSTers,
I'm not sure what the iFlexi plans are but based on what you wrote, the 3GS @ S$748 is pretty okie (this for the 16GB?) considering your existing 3G 16GB iPhone can be sold at about RM1500-RM1800 depending on demand and supply hence other than having to upgrade to iFlexi + be stuck with SingTel for another 24 months, U really don't pay an additional cent for the phone; U do need to check out how much extra U need to pay p/month for the next 24 months cause that's not been taken into calculation as yet.

@tink

yes, it's for 16GB. and I don't think i need 32GB. iFlexi lite is the mobile + data plan, with 500MB @ 7.2mbps

my current contract with singtel however is mobile + data, with 50GB @ 3.2mbps monthly cap. although my monthly data access normally around 200-300MB. thus, by choosing iFlexi lite my monthly fee will be reduced slightly from $60 to $50.

iFlexi value is fine but u have to factor in other VAS after 3months free subscription, such as Caller ID which cost $5 and for me, another v019 @ $5.35. that say, it gonna cost $56 + $5 + $5.35 = $66.35 monthly fee.
Both 16GB and 32GB now have white color, so no worry.

Hi mONSTers,

can I know your current data plan with the 3.2mbps speed ok or not? is it consider fast or very slow in terms of browsing the net? Also, are you a student or currently working in SG?

@mONSTers,
If Ur going to be utilising the plans then I guess forking an additional A$748 for the i3GS seems quite okie. In fact, U could sell the current one and if you're lucky U wouldn't even need to top up for a new handset.

@shdwkillr
sorry, correction. shd be 3.6mbps. the speed actually quite ok. after all, it's just browsing using handphone. how fast u gonna need it? even with 7.2mbps, im doubt it will reach that speed also.

@rx330
no. all iflexi plans have to pay for caller ID etc VAS after 3months. VAS only free for 3months for new line sign up. So im not sure about recontract.

@tink
ya. now i need to dispose my i3g, desperately.

Agree wif Tink, well if ur confident to be able to sell off ur current 3G, then u should go ahead to get the new 3GS. Hey, it's ur money, u decide what's best 4 u.

Btw, I'll update 1st post on the upgrading penalty but my guess is that they offer it to those who signed up the 3G in August 2008 only.

@IODATA,
Unless ur friend looks like a crook and are carrying too many sets will he be checked. That aside, I don't think it'll be a problem lah, seriously! Worst come to worst if you're truly afraid, just take the phone out of the box and put in a lady's handbag and get her to carry it - that way when custom office asks, the phone is NOT new biggrin.gif

@beavis68,
It would have pleased me more if I'd managed to sell mine at RM2k tongue.gif

@jonest,
The yellowish on the white apparently is due to some casing - it will go away if u rub some alcohol on it biggrin.gif In any case, mine's Black biggrin.gif but the white's nice too biggrin.gif

Well unless ur bringing in by truck load brows.gif Anyway 1-2 units shouldn't be a problem if ur friend is driving into JB, then courrier to you. Oh, BTW customs in JB are conducting spot check at CIQ. Don't bring back by truckload!!! Few pcs maybe OK!

To those who are interested to get hold of Singtel iPhone 3GS, there are couple of "resellers" in the Garage Sales thread taking orders liao.... you may visit Garage Sales - Mobile

All Singtel sets should be unlocked and could be used on any network but as far as warranty is concern, you have to refer back to your reseller / Singtel with original Singtel receipt (presumably)..

It's your money, u decide.

Please be advised all transactions are done at your own risks, please do not hold any else here in Lowyat Forum responsible. But I do sincerely believe bank in money to some stangers' account without any background check is the most stupid thing to do.

Guys,

A gentle reminder of the upgrading / penalty fees

*Update*
For early iPhone 3G Users adopters who got the iPhone 3G during August 2008, instead of paying SGD$600, Singtel will give you 50% off and you will just have to pay SGD$300 for the penalty instead of the usual SGD$600. This promotion is only applicable during the launch period on the 10th, 11th and 12 July 2009 . If you get on the 13th July 2009 onwards, you are back to paying SGD$600 for the penalty.

Source: LesterChan.net

So to those who are planning to upgrading and take advantage of the promo, make sure you've reserved ur unit at Singtel website and renew it on 10 - 12 July 2009.

Gd luck

Some certain problem just 1 to 1...

I was constantly getting the error that I am not able to recontract for the phone through Singtel online. I called the customer servce centre and they said that people holding student pass/ work permit (those without proper Singaporean NRIC) are not able to recontract online and have to WALK IN in order to get the phone! I just don't get it why we can't recontract online and I have been a loyal Singtel user here for more than 3 years! Haiz...

I was just unhappy why the reservation is only applicable to Singaporean and PR but not those who are holding student pass/work permit.. I will just go down on Friday after 8pm to see how chaotic is the walk-in line and decide if I want to queue or just go early Saturday or Sunday.

Those who are planning to upgrade their's this weekend, suggest you guys go early. If there's long queu oso, u won't drag it till the last minute. Currently we're not sure whether Singtel will make it available at all their outlets or just selected stores. But I'm sure the one in Takashimaya sure to be packed.

Those living / working nearby any stores mind reporting what's happening in the stores? (including APRs)

Given the current economic slowdown and since every1 is still happy with their current i3G, the new launch may not be significant compared to last year. (I mite b wrong). But some of my S'porean friends wasn't really bothered about the phone at all....

So give it a try, you maybe surprised. But of coz don't go on sunday larrrr, that might be 2 late liao.... try Fri, if can't go on Sat 2.. else fail try Sun.... give it a shot. You may never know....

Added on July 9, 2009, 4:57 pmChannelNewsAsia says iPhone 3GS doesn't disappoint

excerpt

The iPhone has always been sexy and now it’s even more of an object of lust, with the iPhone 3GS.
--------
If you aren’t among the many who’ve booked a spot to be the first in line on July 10-11 to get the iPhone 3GS from Singtel which is the only telco that’s offering the handset, the good news is there is still a chance to place an online reservation for a new iPhone on July 12.

In the meantime, since no one can really tell apart the 2008 and 2009 models, you can make do with an earlier version of the iPhone until you get the real deal.

@arrsoo,
Just cause US launched it at the same price doesn't mean the rest of the world has to follow suit tongue.gif Also, nowhere do U see our phone prices at RM99 or S$99 tongue.gif

In that case, U haf no choice but to walk in this weekend biggrin.gif

@arrsoo,
That U will need to check with SingTel. I'm quite sure the old stocks are still available but am sure they won't be replenishing stocks since the i3GS is out biggrin.gif

@arrsoo,

I don't think u can get 16GB i3G from Singtel anymore coz they won't be selling that particular model anymore. It's being replaced by 16GB i3GS!!!! You may wanna try ur luck wif phone dealers or some forumers at the Garage Sales!

@beavis86,
Er.. SGD is not 2.4765?!!! rclxub.gif Then it's truly not worth getting it from them; might as well sign a plan with SingTel and NOT use the plan.

But I believe their market is the rich Indons, not us poor Malaysians.

judging from the photos on CNET, the launch event by Singtel looks grand. with experience zone for waiting-in-line customers and all. heck, there are even fireworks. i never recall seeing any phone launch event with a fireworks show. i wonder how Maxis 3GS launch even will be.

Channel News Asia say Hundreds queue for hours to get Apple's new iPhone 3GS
By Desmond Wong, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 10 July 2009 2143 hrs

excerpts:

SINGAPORE: Crowds lined up at telco SingTel's headquarters along Exeter Road for as long as four hours to get their hand's on Apple's latest offering - the iPhone 3GS.

SingTel estimated between 1,500 and 2,000 customers on Friday, with more expected over the next two days. The telco also said it has increased the number of counters by about 10 per cent to deal with the load.

Hardcore Apple fans came as early as nine in the morning, including Jackson Low, who was the first in line for the iPhone 3GS.

white gloves???!!! this is getting too melebih lebih la biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

my iPhone 3G S experience was extremely un-glamorised

went to optus store on the first day of launch. approached a personnel and conveyed my desires of wanting the white 3G S plan, 12 months on A$49 cap.

sales person photocopied my bank statement, passport et cetera and sign a few pieces of paper and passed me a brand new, unopened unit. the entire process of entering and exiting the store, took me less than 15 minutes (could be faster, if tinkerbel didn't bombard me with paranoid texts and phone calls rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif )

number ported from virgin mobile to optus under 30 minutes and when i got home, connect to iTunes via the usb cable. activated it and restored from backup and voila!

that's my mundane and less hyped up process of obtaining the 3G S cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif

Added on July 11, 2009, 12:20 amextra: the process of purchasing the 4 outright and unlocked 3G S units from the chandstone apple store was the most time consuming to be honest.

with the amount of people flooding that tiny lot, and each of the iPhone has to swiped separately on the credit card, prolonging the entire process

the appointment thing is for corporate purchase. The other will be pre-order which is guaranteed a set however like I said earlier they just don't let ppl holding student pass/work permit to go for recontract hence I was not being able to pre-order for a set. Just hope that they don't tell me walk-in sets are finish later when I arrived. Will keep you guys updated when I am there later (but subject to availability of wireless, haha..)

I'm not able to collect mine on yesterday which suppose to be as schedule on my pre-ordered. Too busy and the crowd really turn me off. At least 2-3 hours of waiting time is needed.

Going to collect later after work. Hopefully the colour i choose still available.

I have just made a reservation through Singtel website since the customer service told me that I have to made a reservation due to stock limitation (I do not want to travel all the way to the store and being told that I can't get the phone).. Hence, now the problem is I do not know how many N days I have to wait till I can get the phone (poor me in Singapore which has to face the same situation as some of you guys in Malaysia waiting for Maxis..)

I believe we are in the same boat coz according to the latest news currently Singapore island-wide the iPhones are just for those who have pre-ordered last week.. According to some people who asked the staffs in store, the next batch of iPhones coming in will be between 2 weeks to 1 month.. If that is the case, by that time Maxis has launched it's iPhone and I am still not being able to get one in hand.. T.T

Hmm, seems like I can make the conclusion that Singtel really failed this time.. what is the purpose that they asked pre-orderer to make a reservation with SGD50 deposit and in the end not even securing a phone for them..

Singtel extended to those that preordered at their website ($50 was charged to their accs for the preorder, I think) to collect their phones by the end of the month....

@jonest
yup. I just make sure they keep the launch discount/freebies to me by taking down the remark into their system.

@tink
yup. only 16GB white not avaiable. They asking me wether wanna change to 16GB black or 32GB white. they cant really sure when the replenish stock will arrive, but maybe around 2 weeks to month.

Singtel actually very flexible in some way, i means even after i get my phone after july, but they do able to waive the $50 preorder fee if it's due to the stock shortage. So im really no worry about it.

But, my hunger for GS getting lesser day by day, maybe i'll stick with my i3g and let my gf take up my reservation slot. tongue.gif
still considering.

yea...especially after playing with the demo unit yesterday, it's really just another i3g. faster? yes. and the integrated compass is quite useful, at least for me as im relying quite a lot of on the map (im person with no sense of direction tongue.gif haha)

but as my data plan contract will end august, and currently no data plan (50GB) as cheap as that so choosing the iflexi (500MB) will save me $10 each month. my monthly usage is around 200-300MB.

still got time to think while waiting for the stock to arrive. smile.gif

But seriously, how much are the shops selling the i3GS in Singapore?!
*
it depends on what plan you are signing.. The more expensive the plan the cheaper the phone. Take 32gb as eg, cheapest is free, most expensive is SGD868..

@elfness,
Now that Maxis has officially introduced the iPhone 3GS and announced its pricing, U may want to reconsider getting a 2nd unit in Australia because price wise, it's about the same.

@rx330,
Mine's the 32GB one biggrin.gif

yeah....still in sg. back msia once per month or 2. tongue.gif
yup, the stock only reserved for those pre-orderer b4 the launch. no walk-in etc and all have to pre-order for 2nd batch. no info on the date of availability of 2nd batch.

actually i'm quite surprise as they still have few units of white 16GB coz yesterday one of the guy told me white 16GB already out of stock. so today i went with the black in mind.

i asked the counter staff and she told me white 16GB still out of stock and thus i told her i'll get the black 16GB instead. over the serving counter, the gal that served me went into the stock room and came out with the white box. i'm surprised and asked her why the white 16GB still available. she told me the unit arrived today and only left 5 units.

i'm presumed the white 16GB was recalled from somewhere else which suppose to be on sale on other hello shop. well, my guess only.

until now, i3gs still only available on ComCenter for those pre-orderer b4 the launch. the rest, pre-order with $50 is a must in order to get 1.

p/s: bought the 3g dock @ $18 with $30 voc. tongue.gif

@jonest,
I wasn't charged extra. I used 7020kb of data BEFORE I signed up for the plan so I was charged RM70.20 for that. However, the total amount of data I used before the plan wasn't reflected on the bill/site; only the RM99 (pro-rated of course for the month) was reflected - am wondering, any possibility of getting the total data usage used?

@teckhooi,
Singapore/Maxis sets come from the same factory in China; the difference is the pricing plans. Ask urself where you're based and which is most convenient for U. Also do take note of the local warranties.

well, singtel is definitely much more cheaper, but as i said previously, due to the extra 300sgd i need to fork out for termination fees

whereas by sigining up maxis, i do not need to sign the rm 99 data usage, as the rm 155 plan, has 1gb of data usage included, hence i still save from my monthly charges

but my BIL would be signing up with singtel, most prolly he will get it for free, as he can still use his wife name to sign up for another line, so envy sad.gif

ouch... just call up my fren
seems tat singtel is extending the promo to this month end
no need termination fee at all sad.gif

Can I assume that Maxis won't face the situation that Singtel is facing now where those pre-ordered who paid SGD50 can't get the iPhone during the launch? Do you think Maxis will be out of stock of 3GS for those who have paid RM200 next Friday?

Singtel still on the process to deliver the pre-orders. As of today they calling those pre-orders on 14th July and 15th of July expected to start soon.

So I dont see the chances to get it by simply walk-in, at least not for this few weeks.

typically it is the date that you sign up for it.

however since SingTel is in charge of the singaporean bound units' warranty, they will usually adhere to the one stipulated on the receipt.

I just got my 3GS 32GB from Singtel. However, how can we verify whether it is really a 3GS? Cos I did refer to this thread
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/871684
and my iphone model number doesnt seem to tally with the model number at LYN forum. Mine is MC133ZA and had to update the software to version 3.1 on my own. Anyone got da same model number?

Same thing happened to me man. And there was a long queue. I had to wait until my turn to get the queue number before they told me that they were out of stocks! Wrote in a complaint and got a call saying they have stocks reserved just for me the 2 days after I sent in the complain. I guess gotta make noise to get things done right.

I also mentioned in my email that they should put a sign to inform us that the phone is out of stock so people won't have to queue for so long before they know the phone is out of stock. When I went to collect my phone last weekend, I noticed that they put up a sign with a BIG picture of iphone and tiny words saying "out of stock". >.>

Well if your iPhone has the following features:

1. Voice command (pressing and holding home button)
2. E-compass
3. Auto Focus in camera mode and video mode
4. Slider between camera/video mode

Then confirm you're having a 3GS. Also 3GS's capacity starts with 16GB, at least for now.

@Icehart,
I don't think so. Last I heard, Celcom definitely doesn't have intentions to bring it in and well that means we're left with DiGi. I don't see why DiGi should either *shrugs*

@Jasonjinct,
The iPhone handset is the same; both are officially unlocked and usable with any SIM cards.

As to the App Store, the Singapore app store is the Singapore app store and the MY app store is the MY app store. Am not sure if you're allowed to use a MY CC in the SG app store.

@Jasonjinct,
Apps are generally skewed towards country specific so there may be some apps available in the Singapore store meant for Singapore users which aren't available on other stores and vice versa.

@Jasonjinct,
Always purchase the iPhone in the country where you live, that way you have 1 year warranty smile.gif

Added on November 21, 2009, 7:51 pm@FoxAss,
You have the weigh the pros and cons and then make the decision. As you've put it, the AU set will not be warrantied if and when you get back to SG. If it's not too troublesome, Y don't u just get the official SG sets?

@Taneesha,
Y can't U just ask here and who are you posting that request to?

i3G 16gb is no longer sold 'officially'. If you are asking for the 'open market' price, then it is willing buyer willing seller basis. In other words, it depends on your negotiating skills.
