hi guys...i'hv read thru many care sheet on hedgehog...n 2molo i'll get my 1st hedgehog...so 2day plan to go for shopping to get the cage n other important things...cant wait to c my 3 months ols hedgehog...nt sure wad color izzit yet...so curious and exciting now...1 question..izzit ok if i use newspaper s bedding? coz i noe it's a NO for s.gliders...plus..im living at penang...i dunno penang which part got a good exotic vet...might need a backup for my hedgehog and glider(current hving 1 around for 1 years edi...and r doing great)...
*
Then u hav to change the newspaper every two or three days. I think hedgehog is much more easier to take care compare to glider.

one of my fren feed his hedgie with "black wood" izzit fine?
*
I heard some of the owner said that "black wood" causes cat's poop smelly but not sure for hedgehog. I think heggie will like it as long as the cat food is CHICKEN flavor compare to FISH flavor. I had prove it when I feed my heggie with IAMS, they eat like pig, but when I switch to Whiskas tuna flavor, they only consume few kibble at one time.

Whiskas is not good for hedgehogs or pets in general. It's a good thing if you know how to read the label
Whiskas Kitten Food
Chicken by-product meal, Corn Gluten meal, Ground Yellow Corn, Rice, animal fat (Preserved with bha/bht), Soybean meal, Natural Chicken flavour, Wheat Flour, Vitamins (Choline Chloride, dl-alpha Tocopherol Acetate [Source of Vitamin e], l-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate [Source of Vitamin c], Vitamin a Acetate, Niacin, Vitamin b12 Supplement, Riboflavin supplement [Vitamin b2], Thiamine Mononitrate [Vitamin b1], d-calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin d3 supplement, Biotin, Folic acid, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride [Vitamin b6]), Caramel colour, Potassium Chloride, Taurine, Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Whitefish meal, Trace minerals (Zinc Sulphate, Copper Sulphate, Manganese Sulphate, Potassium Iodide), dl-Methionine, Marigold meal, Ethoxyquin (a preservative).
By product meal is not good. it's considered second class food. Gluten will harm the liver of hedgehogs (even humans who are gluten intolerant). Colouring is bad too.
*
smile.gif I know most of the cat food sell in supermarket like Purina, Whiskas, Friskies are not suitable for hedgehog. So far I know Royal Canin is the most recommended brand among the hedgehog owner.

Previously one of my female hedgehog also got mites. Then I try to bath and soak it with warm water and j&j baby shampoo together with brushing its back using soft toothbrush. Amazingly after few time of bathing she is free from mites.

hehe...and yea, he's been toilet trained.it took me about 2 weeks to train him.
he used to poop & pee on me before, but now  I can let him wandering around my room for hours without worrying of him pooping. thumbup.gif

i begin to feed him with mealies & he seems to love it very much. however, I found that he's getting 'lighter' in colour after quilling. his colour looks 'creamier' than the standard s&p, as my friend owns the one with the s&p colour.
*
Hmm... In fact when those babies were born, he is the "BLACKest" one so I think he is definitely S&P... I really unexpected that he will getting lighter in color after quilling... hmm.gif However I hope u will still love him... Btw, regarding ur avatar, is that your hand holding him? Very nice avatar with RED nails and creamy S&P holding in your hands rclxms.gif Do you manage to find the catfood for him?

Oic... hehe, no matter what colour I still love him  wub.gif
and yes, the avatar is me holding him. captured by my bf  tongue.gif . Apparently the Veterinarian nearby my place also selling the Royal Canin & IAMS, so thank God it's not that difficult to get the appropriate catfood.
Just changed his bedding to fleece but he still prefer my bed to lazing  sweat.gif
*
Haha, hope ur bf won't envy of ur hedgie biggrin.gif . I think Royal Canin is better than IAMS bcoz in term of price, RC is more pricey. Think may shift to Royal Canin after my hedgie finished their IAMS.

I think my female hedgie is pregnant again coz her pee poop start to become so Arrrgggg smelly. Haha, just a tips for u, when a female hedgie is pregnant, first thing u would hav notice is her pee poop will become EXTREMELY SMELLY no matter what u feed her. Secondly her body size would "EXPAND" and she would consume large amount of food than usual 3-4 days b4 her due date.

sweat.gif  very productive hedgie you got there nethelp....

LOL next batch I'll go find you  rclxms.gif , not for me, but for my friends...

Ha ha, thanks for that. If I success to get the hoglets I'll inform u n let u choose among the hoglets. It's actually not that easy have all of them survive until the weaning stage. My 1st time breed albino male with albino female, 3 of the hoglets die in one week and the albino mother die one month after cry.gif due to internal infection.

After one year, I got the S&P female from a breeder and pair with the albino male. She give me 5 hoglets and all of them able to make it to the weaning stage flex.gif . Thank god the female S&P is a caring mother.

err...just saw the vid.. shocking.gif  very disgusting. indeed.
i won't feed it with pinkies. (pinkies are cute ! kelian those pinkies rclxub.gif )
i tried the quail's egg & chicken meat.  the cooked ones. and he seems ok with that.
he seems very demand. only eat those meals from my hands...  shakehead.gif
@niclav

do you cage them in a same cage?

maybe the bedding that you use was dusty? if you're using the woodshavings, it's abit dusty.
you should change the bedding by using fleece.
about the flaky skin, i used johnson&johnson baby shampoo as what nethelp suggested before.
the flaky skin is due to the bedding also, especially using the wood shavings. that's why i've changed mine to fleece.
for the small dirts i only spot-clean it, if the fleece getting smelly, just replaced it with the new one & can be washed.
i always replace the fleece once every 2 days, depends on how smelly it is. but sometimes if he poop or pee alot, i replace it frequently.
*
Wow! Amazing! U did try on quail's egg & cooked chicken meat rclxms.gif ! I think each of hedgie has its own personality on food. My female S&P never like cricket but male Albino like it very much. I think my male Albino is actually a tiger not a hedgehog...coz he hari-hari mau drool.gif . Damn "hamsap". Salt&Pepper, try to search on youtube, there is one video showing hedgie eat cilantro.

To niclav, never ever put them in the same cage! They are SOLITARY animal! U r gonna stress them out! Try to bath them warm water with johnson&johnson baby shampoo and use a SOFT toothbrush and gently brush on their back, back ear and forehead spike. At the same time, clean and rub their belly fur. When I got the female S&P from a breeder, I can tell u she is 10x flakier than urs. I can even see the flake drop off while she's walking. But now, she is free from mite. Take care of their environment is the best way to prevent mite.

To Ken.B, I was wondering if hedgie able to consume Dubias coz they r HUGE like cockrouch.

Lastly, thumbup.gif My female S&P give born for 5 little hoglet on 19/04/2011 rclxm9.gif !

pretty please, post their pictures  wub.gif

I only got 1 pair of hedgehog lah biggrin.gif . Hmm... I think better not to disturb the mother b4 2 weeks for the sake of hoglets safety. hmm.gif Be patient, I will post the picture here after a week or two depends on the mother's mood. blush.gif

of coz it's a cooked egg  wink.gif , then i just cut it into small pieces so that it is easily for him to eat it.

yup, i just boiled the chicken meat without any marination. i use the chicken breasts part.
just bear in mind that the hedgehogs are pickier than cats in the food selection.
i try not to stick on the catfood as his staple diet because i saw someone said that the catfood is like 'maggi mee' to hedgehog.
Hedgehog is kinda new exotic pet in Malaysia, so it's pretty difficult to find a proper diet for them. I wonder where to find the 8 in 1 Ultra- Blend Diet - for Hedgehogs in the petshop arond KL.
*
I think it will depends on the quality of catfood. If u took Whiskas or Friskies as their staple food then that is a big NO NO sweat.gif . Most hedgehog owner recommend Royal Canin Kitten. I do test on my hedgie, I buy a small pack of Friskies and mix with IAMS Kitten, my hedgie will consume on IAMS Kitten and left only Friskies...

For 8 in 1 Ultra- Blend Diet... I'm not sure about the brand but one petshop in Petaling Street KL do sell hedgehog food. Imported from USA. This Saturday I may go there, will let u know the shop name.

Congrats to Niclav to become SPIKEY'S OWNER rclxms.gif ! Niclav seems so active on this forum.

It's the hedgehog kibbles. The one that close to the hedgehog diets.
I saw in previous post that they mix this with the RC to get the balanced diet.

Hmm... the packing looks familiar. The petshop owner told me that hedgehog food is lower in protein and that's to prevent them being obese. Cat food is high in protein and if ur hedgie dun get enough exercise it will become obese. I usually let my hedgie free run in living room at night. Last time I do hav wheel (u can refer to my trade post) but I sold it coz my hedgie like to poop in wheel while running. rclxub.gif

Ha ha, PetShack do sell 8 in 1 Ultra-Blend Diet - for Hedgehogs 22oz for RM25.00

Wah... u all no need to sleep one izzit blink.gif Posting at 3am... 6am... Too bad I dun hav connection at home or else I could hav join the conversation.

Niclav, as I said b4, each of hedgie hav their own personality, I did try apple for my previous batch hoglets, only few shows interested with apple. 1 of it is with Salt&Pepper now. So Salt&Pepper u may try a small slice of apple for ur hedgie.

That's superworm! Feeding 2 pcs of superworm isn't enuf, I would just let them hav it until they're full. flex.gif
