Dracula 2000

Slap Wes Craven on a movie and chances are, I'll love it.

When this movie was first release, I was kinda blindsided by it.

10 years later, and I still find myself enjoying it!!

Got to watch it in HD yesterday, and the transfer is pretty good.

One of the very first Gerard Butler thing I can remember, and interesting to note, although Jonny Lee Miller is the lead, Gerard is the bigger name at this point.

Interesting twist on the tired subject of Dracula.

The movie even had the audacity to put on screen the "origins" of Dracula!!

Also one of the first thing that I can remember seeing Jeri Ryan (Star Trek Voyager's Seven of Nine fame).

Also, re-watching this movie, how Len Wise elaborated on some concepts from this movie (eg the lead actress long flowing leather jacket with the I eat trouble for breakfast look)

Just wish they never made Dracula II: Ascension and Dracula III: Legacy.... *Sigh*

The Wolfman (2009)

I really wanted to see this after I caught wind of it.

Alas, when it was release in the theater, reviews were poor.

It is recently release on BD, and I was able to watch it on HD yesterday.

I regret not watching this in the cinema! smile.gif

It started out slow, but when it pickup, it is practically rip roaring!! laugh.gif

Initially, I had the opinion that Benicio Del Toro was a little "aged" to play the role of Lawrence Talbot.

Thinking back, all the previous iterations of Lawrence Talbot, they were "innocent" but not young.

Anthony Hopkins had played many sick in the head roles (Hannibal in Silence of the Lamb, Ted Crawford in Fractured, Ted Brautigan in Hearts of Atlantis, Van Helsing in Dracula) previously but this take the cake.

I also love that they went back to the classic look of werewolf (doggie nose look). This gives the actors more room to express emotion facially speaking.

I recommend this to lovers of werewolf, or lycanthrophy if you MUST be scientific!!

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Having seen the latest re-imagine version of this movie, thought I give the original a watch to refresh my memory.

Watched this in HD today and have to say it stands up despise it age.

I appreciate the work New Line put into transferring this to HD.

Picture quality is the best I've seen, even the sound is noteworth (unlike Warner HD version of Gremlin *sigh*)

I've always remembered Johnny Depp dying quite early in the movie, but it turns out he is the second one standing.

I have to say his "passing" is and remains to be the most unique

If you like horror that is original and blood, look no further then A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

The Gate (2010)

I thought I try something a little different.

Please note that this is a new TV series.

Only one episode so far

The premise of this series follow a new police captain for a gated town called The Gates.

It turns out that things that goes bum in the night residence in this community

So far the ever popular vampires and werewolves are hinted

There are also hints of witches as well.

It NOT horror, horror per se, and have to add the premise is interesting enough to lure me back for at least the 2nd episode.

The Relic (1997)

I like Peter Hyams. In 1997, he made this Action/Horror movie.

Went to the cinema to watch it with a group of friends in 1997, and it turned out one of them really REALLY hate watching horror movie, and he went because I asked him to (poor chap)!!

I have never got this on DVD, and yesterday, got a chance to watch it in HD.

Here's what I think.

1) Mr Hyams, there's these equipments, call LIGHT that you can use to illuminate your sets, so VIEWS CAN SEE WHAT YOU HAD FILMED!!

2) Mr Hyams, NOT ALL ASIAN ARE A$$HOLES (as portrait-ed in this movie of yours)

It is a blast to see Stan Winston creature effects. JUST WISH THE LIGHTS WAS ON SO WE CAN SEE MORE OF IT!!!!!

Also I think the first time I remember, seeing CGI fire effect, so... effective!! tongue.gif

Apart from the two point I had pointed out, the rest of the movie is okay.

In a darken cinema, on one of those big ass screen (not the current cineplex screen).

It was TENSE!!

Wrong Turn 1-2-3

are this horror trilogy any good? from the synopsis, it looks like The Hills Have Eyes (which i think are OK ish and very watchable)

are they sequential and the story related to each other? just digging up old horror movie (not so old actually, but im looking for pasca 2000s decent horror movies)
*
Wrong Turn one was good, the rest...

I believe the first one the one of the very last thing Stan Winston worked on before he passed away...

A lot of shot ever practical effect rather then CGI, which makes it look more realistic

I believe all three movies are about the same homicidal family...

Hi

You have to understand that I'm really old school so you might not agree with my selection.

A good movie for me is usually more of the unusual and offbeat side.

Here is my list

From Hell 2001
Johnny Depp in another dark tale. Interesting how he started his career in Nightmare on Elm Street! A modern take on Jack the Ripper. This movie is really suspenseful and tense.

From Dusk Till Dawn 1996
This is actually two movies, first part VERY Quentin Tarantino and the second Robert Rodriguez. Really unusual movie, very hard to define

Thir13en Ghosts 2001
Robert Zemecski and Joe Silver, reintroduce old horror movie in new light. They were suppose to make one every year but had stop after Gothika... Like the little stories they created for each ghost. Interesting spin on what true horror is.

The Gates (2010)

Okay guys, an update about the new TV series, The Gates, I'm into episode 3 now, and NOTHING is happening.

A lot of implied situations, and NOTHING concrete...

Will give episode 4 a go, and if NOTHING happens again, will drop it like a hot potato!!

Haven (2010)

Ah, Mr Stephen King

He had cornered the market for horror in printed form, now he is going to take over the cinema and tv market as well...

He is the Bill Gates of Horror!! tongue.gif

His latest venture (at least to my knowledge) is this TV Series called Haven

Watched episode 1 yesterday, and it is interesting

Out of town F.B.I. agent Audrey Parker (played by Emily Rose) comes to Haven and encounters mysterious happenings... with the help from local law enforcement Nathan Wournos (what a NAME and I FEEL NO PAIN played by Lucas Bryant) and also a local riff raff Duke Crocker (played by Eric Balfour), she solves the mysterious happenings!! If they threw in a great Dane and another chick, this would be Stephen King's version of Scooby Doo!!!! tongue.gif

Interesting enough to make me watch episode 2, at least THINGS HAPPEN!!

The Crazies (2010)

A remake apparently

I'm sad to say I have not watched the original, and have to add the remake is actually very good.

Interesting spin on the zombie genre

Have been a fan of Timothy Olyphant since I've watched Dreamcatcher (which I like and have been criticise for liking!!)

To each their own, that's what I say

Fan of horror, I recommend this.

I'll hold two thumbs up, if it wasn't for the stupid electrical saw incident... cry.gif

Yes, de4thscythell, it is good (if that's what you mean by wicked!! I'm old and can hardly keep up with you youngun's spin on language... tongue.gif)

Case 39 (2009)

This movie was heavily criticized when it first came out.

It is VERY heavily influence by Japanese horror (storyline wise)

Jodelle Ferland plays Lilith Sullivan (aptly named if you understand the origins of the name Lilith). An abused child of Edward Sullivan (played by Callum Keith Rennie) and Kerry O'Malley (played by Margaret Sullivan)

Renée Zellweger is a social worker who ended up with 39th case (get, GET IT!! tongue.gif) and Bradley Cooper plays a child psychologist (very UNDER USED character).

What I would praise about this movie is the work of Hagen Bogdanski (Cinematography) who with very clever camera work plays up Lilith Sullivan angel and demon act (children has very interesting proportions [eg. big head long limbs])

A passable horror movie if you have nothing better to do

Wrong Turn

quiet similar outlet to The Hills Have Eyes, but on Wrong Turn the creatures /human freak are more animals, they only want to kill the travelers. no explanation what so ever about their existence and they are small in numbers.

rating 5/10

9 Temples (2010, Thai)

I luv Thai horror

They remind me of movies coming out of Hong Kong during the 80s and early 90s

I was enthusiastic about this movie until I watched it.

What is the issue?

The two leads (guy and gal) are workable/likeable (the guy lead remains me of Alexander Foo, anyone, ANYONE!! tongue.gif)

The story is about karma

They tried to describe Karma as something not understandable and here lies the issue

The story is not understandable

Too much BLANKS in between happenings...

The director and cinematography had a very freeing method of filming the movie but lack of sense of direction

One did get a good idea of what Thai country side looks like (VERY similar to Malaysia, Duh?????) and can at points in time in the movie gets bored to a stupor (or maybe that is my normal state of mind.... hmmmm..... hmm.gif )

The revelation at the end makes absolute no sense to me...

They are still experimenting and discovering their (the Thai) world of cinema

My advice to them is keep doing what you are doing

You'll be fine!!

Joy Ride [2001]

this is my type of horror movie. i never like ghost story, illogical stuff or supernatural thingy. just ordinary human antagonist do horrible things. though i think what the antagonist did on this movie are quiet illogical, never mind..

2 brothers in a long highway trip, playing prank with unknown truck driver via radio. and the prank turn a disaster when the stranger felt offended with the prank.

solid 7/10  rclxms.gif

Yup, agreed. I do like joyride

Have you had a chance to watch Jeepers Creepers??

The second movie I remember watching with Justin Long (the first being Galaxy Quest)

If not, enjoy!! smile.gif
