owen can be another version of larsson...he is once a star too...and got him for free. Its better than fighting with other clubs and spending 30 to 40m for benzema since he eat salt more than benzema eat rice
*
Yeah. I hope he turns out to be another Larsson. Few people realise this but there are some facts to consider:-

1) He is free.
2) The contract is a pay as you play. Don't play? No Pay.
3) Owen is a short term measure.
a) This will allow SAF more time to evaluate Macheda and Welbeck. If they're good, promote. If not good, sell off and buy expensive replacement.
b) The market has already been distorted by Real Madrid. This will allow Man Utd to wait till later to buy players, after the prices have stabilised.

I think the key problems will be:-
1) Motivation - He hasn't been motivated since he left Madrid, where he was still almost a goal a game. I hope competing for the BPL trophy will help motivate him again.

2) Fitness - This is the biggest worry since it is something we cannot control. But I think training alongside Giggs, who has managed to conquer his own hamstring problems, will allow Owen to learn a thing or two about protecting himself from injuries. They are similar in that both used to depend a lot on acceleration. As they age, the most common issues will be hamstring problems.

It would be interesting to see how Owen picks up the pieces of his career, if he really does end up with Man Utd. He will be expected to play at a very competitive level eventhough he is no longer as fast as he used to be and he lacks physical presence. So now, more than ever, he will be dependant on his football brain and his technique.

Out - Tevez + Ronaldo
In - Owen + Valencia

I would not say that is a bad trade off, considering we got "Cha ching" 80 mill and saves tonnes in salaries.

Valencia. Maybe his lack in ability and goalscoring ratio can be offset by his teamplay. Like Beckham used to do for us, tons of assist and single digit goals for most season.

Owen. Considering he is replacing Tevez who did not really start much in the league (Not counting FA cup and Carling cup) this is a reasonable gamble. Just throw him in the last 30 mins and see if he can get the goal.

The looming World Cup should provide enuff motivation for him to perform. Heskey has pipped him on the pecking order and he'll definitely want to do something bout that, especially to show that he can form a deadly partnership with Rooney. His only obstacle would be trying to stay fit. Still, even if he does get crocked, we won't be losing much in terms of wages + we can rely on the kids. I'm sure Fergie has his reasons for the move. At the beginning I was pretty sceptical, but after reading up on how the deal will be structured, we wouldn't be taking too much of a risk with Michael. Might grab a handful of important goals a la Larsson.

Michael Owen has arrived at Manchester United's training ground as his shock move to the Premier League champions gathers pace.

Empics

Michael Owen: A free agent

The striker will then have a full medical at Carrington on Friday and could put the finishing touches to a pay-as-you-play deal as early as next week.

The England international is without a club following the expiry of his contract with Newcastle United and it appeared only Stoke City and Hull City were interested in offering him a contract.

But now it appears Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to snap up a player who is fourth in the all-time goalscorers list for his country.

Newspaper reports suggest the contract will be purely incentive based, depending on minutes played and goals scored.

Sir Alex tried to sign the player - a boyhood Everton fan - as a teenager but instead he opted, on the advice of his father, to pen a contract with Liverpool where he scored 118 goals in 216 games.

United have been searching for a new forward since the departure of Carlos Tevez at the end of his loan deal. They had been linked with the likes of Karim Benzema and David Villa, but now it seems Owen will be arriving.

The 29-year-old suffered an injury-ravaged time at St James' Park but still managed to score 10 goals as the Magpies dropped out of the Premier League.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker will be hoping a move to Old Trafford will push him back into the thoughts of England coach Fabio Capello ahead of next summer's World Cup finals.

United's policy is not to comment on transfer stories, but some Red Devils' messageboards have been lighting up with negative comments.

''Not happy. From what I've seen he is nowhere near as good as he was,'' was one; while another discontented fan lamented: ''Owen hasnt been the same for years!''

( i thought hull city will get owen.... LOL!)

Don't see the need to get anyone else. We've replaced the players we lost with those in similar positions. I'd rather see the wad of cash used to reduce our debt.

Hrrmmss.. Owen..! Liverpool old-boy laugh.gif
Anyway.. lots of noise going around my Facebook about him being a has-been and whatnot... but I think if he can rekindle that spark that once made him a proven goal-scorer (I'm sure being the best club in the world should do it tongue.gif) and that our physios take good care of him.. well could be a good thing.
Fingers crossed!

I think Owen should no have a problem in terms of motivation. To play for probably the best club in England and play at such a high level and with the World Cup coming next year, he should be performing well to appear for what it suppose to be his last World Cup..haha..Capello's watching him..

Hopefully M.Owen can be as good as Henrik Larrson did for us ! Good back up for the first team with a good bargain ! He might fancy this as his last chance of his career to win some medals with us smile.gif and importantly work hard to win back his place in England...

Hopefully it's a win - win situation here !

I have no problem with Owen coming to OT. He is proven striker, people said his prime time has past but to me, he still has it. He still can score goals and give contribution to the team. Motivation is the last thing we should worries, SAF have his own technique when dealing with players. Just look what he done with CR and Giggs.

What is the number that Valencia getting?
