red bull...livita...

adequate lighting...

try doing light exercises once you start feeling sleepy while studying.

avoid sugary stuff like biscuits, chocolates, chewing gum or sweets while studying. sugar makes sleepiness even worse.

All of the mentioned above has caffeine, certain tea makes you sleepy as it has relaxing properties or kava2. Want to do it the healthy way, go do some exercise and keep your heart pumping.

Wont taking chewing gum makes you stay alert even more? Cause your jaw is moving.

Take an afternoon nap. About 1 hour.

Added on June 21, 2009, 10:55 amBut if you nap in the afternoon, you'll need daily exercise in the evening to be able to sleep at night.

I second this strongly.
I always drink this during my exam days. Extremely good in such that it does increase mental alertness.
If you're rich enough, drink this everyday. I for one am not, so I only drink it during exam days.

I'm like you too, been relying on coffee since 12. Now already 20.
Just recently I've cut down on coffee intake. Only one cup a day, no tea or coffee for the rest of the day.
For the first few days I felt really tired due to lack of coffee. But I forced myself to avoid afternoon naps by exercising during that time. A week after that I definitely feel more awake than with coffee.

Red Bull and Livita contain caffeine la. But yes, carbs and sugars make you more sleepy. I also agree with the light exercise / stretching when you start feeling sleepy - get the blood circulation going.

I also use aromatherapy but I know some people who say it does absolutely nothing for them. Citrus, ginger, eucalyptus and peppermint scents are said to help.

I think this is your problem:
Too heavy lunch with too much carbs.
Keep your lunch light with less carbs. Large amounts of carbs will make you sleepy about 1-2 hours after lunch. Happens to me in the office too.

It might also got nothing to do about sleepiness, it's just that your brains doesn't want you to study. So you get bored reading and revising. And your mind drifts away. -->Sleepy. X^D

Perhaps you'll need a different method for studying.
Writing short notes, drawing diagrams, strecth once a while, etc.

when u have less motivation, ur mind tends to go in a more relaxed mode, try to gather a few friends and do study together outside of home, preferably in library, Starbucks or oldtown, the environment there hardly make u asleep

No, no, no. I grappled with this problem too when I was doing the Cambridge A-levels with Further Mathematics, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. And then my undergraduate studies in mech. eng. and then my masters.

Our bodies have a hard-wired circadian rhythm with low-points at around 3 a.m. and 3 p.m. It's natural to take an afternoon nap. It's just that our industrial society is organized for productivity, and have thus denied us our afternoon naps.

I'm no angel in this. I consumed profuse amounts of coffee during my studies. But that's because there is work to be done, and there are no excuses, so circadian rhythm be damned.

If you're going to drink coffee anyway, you may as well drink GOOD coffee. Buy them at Starbucks, have them grind them for you, and feed it into a Bialetti Brikka. Or if you have more money than me, buy Illy.

ok if you want to study long hours but can't, don't force yourself. you won't be very efficient at it. study for 45 minutes then rest for 15 minutes, then have another go at it again. your brain will be fresher and more susceptible to accepting information. smile.gif

if you just want to do homework/assignment all night, drinking anything will help you along, inclusive of plain water. or else, just wash your hands everytime you're sleepy.

Livita has taurine. You might wanna check out what taurine does, medically.

Protein has almost nothing to do with disturbing the pattern of your insulin. It's the carbs .

Drink more tea.

Tea contains theophylline which act similarly as caffeine.

The best way to stay awake is still adequate rest.
