hello everyone... im new.. i just got 2 kittens from a dear friend... both about 4 months old... tapi sudah besar like normal cat. right now they r eating iams.. for kitten... bloody hell rm29 bucks for 500g.

i need to find cheaper one... adoi.. cannot go for cheaper type.. just cheaper price for same iams.. for kittens....

and for my kittens ni.. shud i go for vaccination oso? and how to prevent tick? i scared that the two might get it.. coz they r quite hairy type...

and another question...

how to prevent their fur to fall off?

thanks!
*
Congratulations on your new pets! I am sure you will have lots of fun with them.

Yes, having pets is a BIG responsibility. Nothing is cheap my friend.
For premium food like RC, IAMS are considered very pricey however there are other premium food that is not that too pricey compared to RC and IAMS if you buy in bulk.

We are doing this in petfinder where we group each month to buy Blackwood. Price per kg is Adult = RM9.20 and kitten = RM12.50.

Yes, your kittens will need vacinations to prevent them from easily being affected by dangerous diseases. Just like human being they need to be vacinated. Vacination will be for the first 3 months meaning you will need to vacinate them 3 times. Once per month. Then followed by a yearly booster.

To prevent your kittens from fleas, ticks you must get a bottle of frontline or you can go to a vet to ask them to spray your kittens with frontline of course with a mininal charge. Better to do it yourself. More cheaper as one bottle of frontline costs RM38.00 or RM39.00 per bottle. Please remember to spray two days before bath or two days after bath. The spray can last for about 6 weeks.

Preventing fur from shedding is all in the food. Make sure you give premium and good quality food. If still shedding then you can opt to give salmon oil or fish oil which is high in Omega 3 & 6 which is good for the fur. Brewster yeast conditioning tablets will also help but not all cats or kittens will eat the tablet so easier to give in liquid form.

Good Luck!

is friskies bad? i gave them to my cats since 2 years ago. i got more than 10 cats so can't really afford the expensive ones
*
Yes, its bad, I am afraid.
First of all its low in nutrients and secondly your male cats can developed kidney stones if they do not drink enough water.
There are premium foods at very low prices as we buy in bulk.
I have 16 cats and am feeding them with Blackwood premium food from US.
Price for Blackwood Adult is RM9.20 per kg and Blackwood kitten is RM12.50 per kg.
After feeding my cats with Blackwood they grew fatter, shed less fur and their poo poo is not smelly and nicely formed.
You want some samples just PM me

Hi Shukri,

There was a siamese kitten for adoption in www.petfinder.com.my recently.
Not sure if it is still available.
You can try to have a look under the adoption section.

can i ask...

is blackwood better than iams?

im feeding my two half-blood persian iams... they r 4 months now...

please help..

tq
*
Well.... Blackwood is considered one of the premium foods.
Most of the forumers at petfinder who was previously on RC and IAMS commented that when feeding their cats on BW they found the following :-

1) Less shedding of fur
2) Poo poo is nicely formed and less smelly
3) Cats and kittens tend to put on more weight (not the flabby type of fat)
4) BW does not spoil quickly when left too long (masuk angin)
5) No ants coming to the food.

When you are free just drop by to www.petfinder.com.my and look for the thread Blackwood!

planning to get a blackwood myself but will the adult cat eat blackwood kitten version? rclxub.gif

Oh yes definitely!
All my cats irrespective adults or kittens are on BW kitten.
This is because kitten food contains more protein so its good for the cat but not cats that has liver problem.
Since changing to kitten food all my furbabies are so gemuk he....he...
Fur also become more shiny!
You guys should try it!

What is the right age to take a kitten to her first checkup? I found mites on Luna's fur, at the age of 1 half month, can i start deworming and mite treatment? is Frontline recommended?
*
You can actually start deworming your kitten as young as 2 weeks old nod.gif
As for mites, just spray frontline on a cotton wood (facial cotton wool) and rub against the kittens fur.
Becareful of the eyes.
That's what I did with my kittens before.

Cute~!!!!!

Um my kitten refuse to eat dry food, she likes the raw one sold in packets or tins (whiskas kitten) is this normal? She also refuse to drink milk and drink very little water...physically she is fit and active just like normal kitten, only her diet is making me worry...is this normal?
*
Hi there Kaoru Himura,

Yes, its normal.
Your kitten knows what food it likes best.
You have to be firm with your kitten.
Try not to spoil it by giving it wet food all the time that is why it is used to eating wetfood rather than the kibbles.
Even if she is meowing for the wet food you still need to be firm and not give in.
The kiteen will eat the kibbles when it is hungry... trust me... I have been through this before he..he....
I know it sounds cruel not to feed it but we need to train our cats and not the other way round ha..ha...
Kittens does not necessary need milk.
Don't feed it with human milk as it will cause diarhea.
If it does not want milk then stop it.
Premium kibbles will give her all the nutrients for it to grow into a healty cat.

QUOTE(mariellasays @ Sep 2 2010, 12:00 PM)
I have a couple of questions....

1) I notice that my cats have been shedding more fur this month. Is it because of the hot weather? Because Im giving the same type of food and nothing's changed.

2) I recently spayed my persian cat and eversince the operation, she's become grumpy and moody. She hates being around her kittens and would smack them if they get too near. I've tried to make her happy, play with her and give her extra treats. But she's still grumpy. When she's alone and the kittens are not around, than she'll be the most manja cat like she use to be before. What should I do?

3) My mum's cat who's 12 years old has been losing weight but has been eating a lot. Is this normal for mature cats?
*
Hi Mariellasays,

For your information, long haired cats will tend to shed a few times in a year. Also when stressed cats will also tend to shed their fur so you will need to determine the root of the problem. Maybe you need to give your cat some supplement for the fur e.g. brewster yeast, salmon oil

I think it takes time for your female cat to adjust after being spayed as her hormons are not stable yet. I noticed that my male cat is also like that but after a month, he became the most super duper manja cat. Give her some time. Maybe also she has lost the sense of smell of her kittens and thinks they are new comers to the house and therefore acts hostile to them.

As for your mum's cat its not normal so better bring it to the vet for immediate check up.

thank you very much for your advise, yeah i think i spoil her alot hahaha...now what i do is to mix the wet and dry food. plan to gradually put the dry food more than the wet one so she will get use of eating both. As for now she seems ok with it, maybe its working XD

I bought the kitten milk powder for her, but yeah i dun think she need it anymore... she is very playful and smart, and very easily toilet train (i'm very happy and proud for that haha) I also notice that although she is a mix DSH + Russian Blue, i think her fur wont be silverish blue color...she's more to black with a little white second coat but still look like black to me...dunno if her fur will change after a few months, i guess i have to wait n see XD

This is Luna's pic I took this morning, she was beside me when i woke up n sleep like that...like pengsan hahaha..when i call her she responded but do not want to open her eyes...only woke up half hour later and the first thing she did is grab my hand and nibble my fingers..hahaha too cute~!

You are most welcome.... smile.gif
We try to share what we know....

So cute the way Luna sleeps.
She will grow into a beautiful cat.

any tips from oldtimer on how to take care of this cat,

Congratulations on your new long life friend.
She is indeed beautiful.
I have a male semi long hair chocolate seal point cat which I recently adopted.
Will upload his picture soon.

Usually cats are indenpendant and don't need much attention except for feeding time, grooming time and quality time.
What you will need to do is groom it on a daily or alternate days to avoid tangles in its long hair.
Give it good premium food to avoid excess shedding of fur.
Give it supplements to keep it healty.
Regular vet check ups.
And most important lots and lots of tender loving care!

CUTENESS!

Btw i have this cat, i have put on spot-on and bathe her with anti fleas shampoo but the fleas wont leaveeeee. I am going crazy already
*
Did you wait for two days after putting spot on to bathe her?
Frontline only works two days before bath and two days after bath.
If she is badly infested with fleas better bring her to the vet for a flea jab.
It will solve your problem immediately.

hello,

i need some help on food recommendation for kitten. which brand should i go for, Royal Canin, IAMS or Science Plan? My kitten is ~3month old (based on teeth development. this kitten has no mother). should i give dry or wet? and is milk replacement is necessary for my kitten? If yes, what brand should i go for?
*
Hi Dan137,

Royal Canin baby cat would be best since its still small.
After that you can upgrade to RC Baby Cat 36.
You can give wet food once in a while as treat but not too often or you will find that your kitten will want to eat wet food only.
Maybe give it twice or three times in a week.
No need milk replacement.

Try looking at www.petfinder.com.my
You might be lucky as some people give away their DLH cats for free or for a minimal adoption fee.
Good luck!

Hi....

Its normal for a kitten to be mewing.... as it misses its mum and siblings.
The previous owner should have waited until the kitten is 3 months old before letting it go to you.
The kitten is lonely therefore it will keep mewing.....
It will keep doing this for about 3 to 4 days until its used to your home....
In the meantime put some cotton wool in your ears to block out the mewing sound tongue.gif (just kidding)

While milk might seem like a natural choice for your cat, the truth is that cow’s milk offers no nutritional value for cats, and it can cause digestive problems in many. The reason is that most cats develop intolerance to lactose shortly after they are weaned. This means that they are unable to digest the sugars that occur naturally in milk. This causes problems that include diarrhea and other unpleasant digestive problems.

Some people think that cats need to have milk in order to get all the necessary nutrients. This is not true. In fact, cow’s milk does nothing to meet a cat’s nutritional needs. If a cat was fed only milk, it would not be able to survive. Feral cats provide proof that cats do not need milk to be healthy, as wild cats do not usually have the opportunity to drink cow’s milk.

As long as your cat is eating a high quality food, and has access to clean fresh water, she is getting all that she needs. Milk alone is not a sufficient diet for any cat, and should never be given in place of food OR in place of water. Replacing a cat’s food or water with milk can cause your cat to become malnourished.

Many cats do seem to enjoy milk, and this causes a dilemma for many cat owners who love to give their cat treats that they enjoy. While most cats are lactose intolerant, some are not. For these cats, milk as an occasional treat is fine. The only way to know how your cat will react to milk is to feed her some. If she does not develop diarrhea then it is safe to assume that she is not lactose intolerant, and you can continue to give her the treat she loves. Again, milk should never be given in place of food, but as a treat.

If your cat IS lactose intolerant, but still seems to crave a bowl of milk now and then, there is a way to satisfy her without upsetting her digestive system. Milk substitute that is specially formulated for cats is sold in most pet food stores. Like regular milk, it should only be given as a treat and not as a replacement for meals. Even if you feed this "cats milk" on a regular basis, a high quality cat food and fresh water should always be available. Another option for lactose intolerant cats is to give lactose-free milk. This milk is available in the same aisle as regular milk in most grocery stores.

Kittens, unlike full grown cats, DO need milk, but the milk they need is their mother’s. The mother’s milk is full of all the fat, protein and antibodies that a kitten needs to grow and survive. Until a kitten is weaned, approximately four weeks after birth, a kitten should have only milk. NEVER give a kitten cow’s milk. Obviously, the ideal milk is that from the kitten’s mother. If this is not possible due the kitten being abandoned or orphaned, you will need to feed a substitute that should be available at your local pet store. The kitten will need to be fed this milk substitute several times a day. While the pet store personnel can probably answer most of your questions about caring for abandoned kitten, you should consult a veterinarian to be sure that the kitten is getting exactly what it needs.

The bottom line is that milk is not necessary for a cat, but as long as she seems able to tolerate it, an occasional bowl isn’t going to hurt.

Usually when a cat is pasing blood in their stools it is either :-

1) Having hard stools (due to lack of water)

2) Having viral instentine problem which needs immediate vet attention.

Please visit Dr. Teo at Pandan Indah who is opened until 7.00 pm from Tuesday to Sundays. His clinic is just opposite the Pandan indah police station.

QUOTE(easyzuddin @ Sep 27 2010, 06:37 PM)
have a question here, can cat die because of stress?
*
Hi there Easyzuddin,

Stress in any living creature can weaken their immune system, making them more vulnerable to infection and disease. If cats become so stressed that they stop eating, this can have serious consequences. because prolonged fasting results in liver damage.

Here is five things that might stress up your cat :-

A new family member is really stressful for cats, no matter if it is a newborn baby, another cat or a person who is moving in to live with the family.

Holidays are also very stressful events for cats. Felines are animals that enjoy quiet and calm environments and if people like having parties during their holiday, their pet may get really stressed. Parties are associated with many people, loud music and noise - all these things are very stressful for cats. Have you ever notices that your cat hides somewhere when you have a party? You can help your pet by providing a hidden place of its own where can hide away from the noise without anyone bothering it.

Mobbing into a new home is also very stressful for the cat because moving means new environment for your cat, and cats don't like this. Most cats are really scared to have a new home. You can comfort your per by bringing its litter box, toys and bed from the old home.

Your beloved "family member" may be stressed by a change in the routine. If your routine changes somehow, the cat's routine will change, too. It sounds amazing, but changing your job can be very stressful for your pet.

If you have started working after a long time spent at home, your cat may be seriously stressed. You can try dangling your keys before you leave home and the pet will get used that you are getting ready to leave. Your pet will soon get used to the fact that you will leave your home every morning.

This kind of pet owners know that their pets love looking out of the window but this may also stress the cat. For example, in a strange cat passes by and marks the territory, this can be stressful for your cat because she can't get to the other cat. This situation can cause both stress and anger.

They are wonderful pets but they need attention, just like people. So make sure you pay enough attention to your cat to avoid stress and behavior issues in your beloved cat.

Personally, I don't your cat can die from being stressed unless they stop eating then they will get weak (refer to Paragraph 1).

*
Hi there Kaoru Himura,

Well.... if you are bringing your kitten for its first vacination, then it will cost around RM35.00 (vacination and deworm).

However, Klinik Yuan @ Pandan Indah does it for RM25.00 only. I usually bring my kittens for their vacination there.

If your cat is ill then the charges will vary on its sickness. Very difficult to tell you the price.

i see....i just went back form a clinic in bayu perdana klang...and I dunno if i was overcharged...i think so....

For these :

-Deworm
-First Vaccination

-100grams Nutrition gel (NUTRI FORTE) : An energy supplement paste in a tube like toothpaste. The vet said my kitten is too thin, ask me to give a little of the paste trice or twice a day to pump him up.

-100ml Frontline Spray

Total charges : RM123.00

Can anyone please validate this? I was trying to say that I will buy my own frontline and i have my Troy deworm liquid.....

-
*
Mmmm based on my experience :-

Frontline 100 ml = RM35.00
Vacination and deworm = RM35.00 (standard fee)
Supplement depending on the brand.... some price ranging from as low as RM19.90 to RM28.00

I think the price is consider reasonable since you had purchased, Frontline, Deworming and supplement.

Just for info, to boost up a cat's appetite you can also give B complex that you can buy direct from the government hospitals (small round yellow pill) only costs RM0.60 (3 strips). Give one tablet per day. Any excess of vitamin B will pass through the cats urine so no worry of overdose. Definitely save you $$$$$$

Also... if you are feeding your kitten with good premium food, usually the food will contain Lysinc which will help to also boost your kittens appetite. Usuallly I will fatten up my furkids with boiled chicken breast which is very high in protein and this will definitely fatten up your kitten in a jiffy!

Hi guys, I'm new here. Just got myself a female kittens last week, a stray one. I'm not really sure the age of a kitty. Keep her because... for no reason lol. Just feels like it. Not sure what type of cat either. Black and white color with it's head full of "kurap", don't know what the english term is huhu. She's quite lonely tho, always meowing alone in the house because me and my housemate always busy. Planning to find a companion kitty for her, but scare that they'll fight.

Gonna bring her to the vet sometimes next week for her first vaccination and the info above is just what I need, the "cost". Huhu. Very active and bite/claw my hand daily... ouchs
*
If your kitten is having 'kurap' or mange (ears will have rough and bumby edges) it is definitely mange and you will need to bring it to the vet for a jap. For mange jap, Klinik Dr. Teoh charges only RM10.00. If you do not treat it you and your housemate might get it too shocking.gif And if you have new cats or kitten they might get it too. So treat it before you get a new kitten.
