FAQ
m43 is for who?
~ m43 is suitable for people who demand small camera with dSLR picture quality and with interchangeable lens
~ although small, its still not pocketable compare to best compact like LX3, S90, F200EXR, WX1...etc
is this a dSLR?
~ yes and no. Yes in terms of picture quality, its comparable to dSLR (YMMV). No, because dSLR means
there's a mirror reflex system and m43 does not have mirror. That's why its so small.
Olympus or Panasonic?
~ Olympus for people who want in body stabilizer. Panasonic for faster Autofocus.
Price?
~ RM2100 for single lens system (Olympus E-PL1)
Flexible?
~ Yes. By using adapter, you can use any brand of lenses (Olympus , Panasonic, Canon, Nikon etc)

Here is the high ISO comparison between DP2 and E-P1:

Alot people do, but some people are just too afraid of the bulk of DSLRs - even me.
Hence the P1 is quite perfect.

Now i just need to wait for it to go down a wee bit more...
*
Agree with you. I bought Canon 40D and I find it just too big to bring anywhere. Thus
I sell it and wait for something like this. Initially, was thinking of DP1/DP2. Now this is
more awesome.

Waiting for price drop. if it don't drop price, probably will go for Pentax K-7 sad.gif

yeah, if need it now, then LX3. Else, just wait for the price drop. Kakaka... the awesomeness of interchangeable lens with compact

Aiyah, olympus price drop quite fast 1. Retail 2999 means street will be around 2700.

Wait few more months sure drop till G1 price. Even G1 at RM2400 i think still worth than getting those D40 la, A200 la, etc.

But 1 thing doubtful in the preview (sample unit) is the AF speed, it said similar to E620 and slower than G1.
Hopefully the final product will be faster than it was in the preview else it would be disappointing (even though much better than nikon and canon liveview)
*
wah, don't make me happy man. I dun wan to get K-7 coz its still big. doh.gif
I don't care AF speed. I'm slow shooter.

AF speed is important la, else it make it like a normal compact camera.

G1 AF is dam fast, i rate it faster than Nikon AF-S, i have an E520 now, so i know the Olympus E-series liveview is definitely slower than the G1.

I sold all my D90 + lenses and get ready for this thing, at last  laugh.gif
Superb combo with my LX3
*
ha? did I read it right? You sold all D90 and lens to get ready for E-P1?

wahahaha... my 40D did that and that's the last time I see it cry.gif that's why, size is very important. E-P1 + 17mm pancake for the win.

Never happened with other Olympus release. This must be the most poisonous product Olympus ever released drool.gif

seriously? Harry sold his D90 already (btw, who's harry??)? really planning to get the E-P1? is the full accessories out already? alot of things need to be considered also...
I guess it's not for all people.. for me, I'd still stick to my current DSLR since I'm already used to it... It's a good system for those who's getting into photography and wants a smaller body...

Whichever way you look at it, it will still be a niche market.

PnS users will still stick to their PnS, especially if they do not want the hassle of changing lenses.

Pro users will ask why buy a micro four thirds when you already have a full fledged DSLR?

Which leaves the niche market for pro users who just want to use it with the pancake lens on - that's the only time it's really compact in size - and for gear heads who like the novelty.

Mounting it with normal four thirds telephoto lenses with an adapter will make the camera feels really off balance in weight. And how will you hold it? The weight will be on the lens weighing it down towards the front. It's compact size will make it hard to grip steadily plus it has no viewfinder so you have to hold it at arms length to see the LCD to compose - all of which makes for a really strange pose.
*
No need to change lens that often. Pro user who buy E-P1 is those who getting sick of lugging around big dSLR.
They can just buy E-P1 instead of compact camera.

By the way, I can see that there's a lot of people who wants a dSLR quality in compact bodies. That's not niche market I think.
I think the market for this type of people is huge. I would say girl who want good quality camera will go for this. As a matter
of fact, I'm also being poisoned kaw kaw. At first I thought of getting K-7 since its small. But this is dream come true.

Conclusion:- This will be big. Majority of people will go for E-P1 instead of dSLR now.

QUOTE(yehlai @ Jun 19 2009, 12:22 PM)
Camera body is getting smaller and smaller, but the lens are still bulky. So theres not much different when you mount it with some after market lenses smile.gif and price to pay is scrifice of the pictures quality. Maybe will attract some techies gearhead for a short while.
*
That's why I'm aiming for pancake 17mm f/2.8.

Ya lor... the market appeals to people who thinks the same as you. I am not saying that this is wrong. It's prefectly ok but truth is how many people will have the same kind of thinking? Niche market lor.

You're looking for better IQ because you have been exposed to the DSLR IQ range before and can never go back to PnS.

For the average PnS user, most of them don't care that much about IQ. You see them talking about size lah, megapixels lah, how many times zoom lah, design lah and what not. So given the price range of the EP-1, it will only appeal to a subset of these PnS users as the price is on the high side compared even to entry level DSLR.

I won't be the least bit surprised if a typical AhBeng PnS user goes like:

PnS user : Wah! This E-P1 very nice leh. How many times zoom ar, this camera?
Shopkeeper : This kit lens is 14-40mm so about 3x zoom.
PnS user : Wahlau! So big lens only 3x zoom ar? Other camera with so big lens can go 18x zoom leh!
Shopkeeper : You can get a telephoto lens if you want to zoom further. Can change lenses one, this camera!
PnS user : Wah! Now the view is zoomed in. How to get back to the wide view?
Shopkeeper : That one have to change lens again..
PnS user : Hah?! Change again ar... why so mafan one? Better I buy the other camera...  rclxub.gif
*
Firstly, this one will have dSLR IQ. That's why its easier for dSLR people to move to this camera.
Second, its so small that you can bring it anywhere.
So this will definitely move a lot of dSLR people who want smaller camera to E-P1.

I actually believe this is breakthrough product. People who waited at the side line to buy dSLR but decide otherwise because of the bulk might be
scrambling to buy this camera.

QUOTE(idoblu @ Jun 19 2009, 04:50 PM)
LOL...some of the arguments really funny.
Actually all cameras are niche market if you think about it. You want a big ass camera, get a DSLR, you want a small ass camera get a P&S, you want something medium - get the Pen.... rclxms.gif

Why so work up over a product? No one product will please everyone. What you think works for you then buy it, and remember what works for you doesnt mean it works for others. There is no logic in the decision making.
*
No product is perfect. But I think Pentax K-7 is probably perfect product (minus articulated LCD sad.gif )

does anybody know how long does the battery lasts? and for what image resolution?

I've always bought Olympus, and one of the main reasons is because of their really really long battery life. so many shots at one time. really a life-saver for me.

300 pics only.
