I'm afraid DLC is here to stay. In fact, it's already part of the gaming industry and we can try to boycott them but that will only stall them for so long before the consumers become accustom to it and finally accepting it.
Most of the old school gamers who have experienced expansions rather than DLC, don't really like the idea of DLC. It's pricey, gimmicky and sometimes incomplete. But the publishers are not aftering the old school market. They're aftering the kids and newer generation that do not know what game expansions really means. To them DLC, the monthly map and skin release is the expansions.
I will be surprised if they pull the plug on these pre order debacle. They saw how futile the boycott was against MW2 and with stornger product, they seem very confident that the majority of kids will buy the game regardless of any boycott that may take place.
I am also afraid this kind of cheap promotional techniques will stay too, because the fact is, people hate buying games from Gamestop in US or EB Games in Australia. I hate EB Games the most as a retail chain store due to their employee's attitude and ridiculous pricing. GAME is heaps better and i did bought a few games from them.
DLC isnt all bad, as it depends on the implementation. For example, i bought BC2:Vietnam as soon as its available, as it offers a different experience and the price is reasonable. Same goes with a couple of games like Killing Floor, Dawn of War 2, Supreme Commander, as they are optional and adds into the experience. Nothing wrong with that.
The problem is, like Total Biscuit said, is taking out content that is done before release and make it as a pre-order exclusive at a certain store. At the same time, no other way to get it. That is the root of the problem.
If they gave it to everyone, no one even cares man. I would just pre-order the game instead to secure the extra weapons. Now, i dont even know there are any more of these packs installed for us.
