QUOTE We stood around for about two or three minutes in a totally empty reception area. Then one of the Valve staff walks by and asks us if we need help or if we’re waiting on someone and we explain we’re waiting on Chet. In short order we’re greeted by another Valve staff member, Chet had been tied up in a meeting. I’m going to go ahead and say it was Erik that gave us the tour, even though that might not be right. Valve takes up the entire 10th floor, part of the 11th and 9th and a few offices on the 8th. We were only touring the 10th and part of the 9th, we were told that there’s another “game design group” on the 11th; but details were purposefully vague. I think that Valve is working on a new project or it’s Episode 3 in progress. It’s right about here that I think I should mention that Valve never asked us to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement we get to write about everything we have seen. We were also allowed to take pictures just about everywhere, although I was so busy asking questions and getting answers that I didn’t take all that many pictures. From there we are given a tour of the Valve offices, through the Valve server room, saw the kill button for Valve’s servers and got a chance to say Hi to a whole lot of the Dev team for L4D/L4D2. We got to see all of 10th floor and most of the 9th and saw some really cool stuff in progress, all sorts of game concept art and bits and pieces of level design for both L4D and L4D2. From there, we sat down with Gabe and some of the L4D/L4D2 dev team. Gabe told us right up front that the reaction to the announcement of Left 4 Dead 2 had been unexpected. He also said part of this was trying to develop multiple titles at the same time. The reaction of the community was thoroughly shocking to Valve; they didn’t expect this kind of backlash on the announcement of Left 4 Dead 2. Further to that, having Agent of Chaos and myself out was part of trying to work with the community. Near release of Left 4 Dead Valve made all sorts of claims about upcoming content; With Left 4 Dead 2 they have been very careful about revealing potential content until they are sure it will be in the game and are not making the same claims about support. It seems likely that this is in response to the community’s concerns over Left 4 Dead, not just the boycott; and it is likely that Valve is being careful about what they claim is coming. After talking to Gabe and a bunch of the L4D/L4D2 guys, we met up with Chet and talk about L4D and L4D2. Unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to play the new DLC, it wasn’t available (or so I was told when I asked). I did ask Chet about bug fixes/exploit fixes for L4D; I was told that bug and exploit fixes are being worked on, just like interoperability (aka. cross play). We talked about the problems with some of the L4D weapons and things like stacking/camping. It was mentioned that there ‘should be fixes for that’ coming in the near future. The one thing we can take from all that is that they are still working on bug fixes and they will come, just probably not before L4D2 drops. I’m pretty sure Chet had also mentioned something about how some of the L4D2 fixes could be incorporated into L4D, however I’m not sure if that was in relation to a wide variety of things or problems with the Hunting Rifle / Sniper Rifle which was something we were talking about at the time. Now for some good news: There is more DLC for Left 4 Dead coming after CrashCourse. We were given a rough idea of what it should be, however we were asked not to talk too much about it so it didn’t “influence the creative process”. I can tell you this: it’ll either be a new Special Infected, a new Campaign or new Weapon(s). It’s definitely one of the three, perhaps more. This is pretty much the only thing that we were asked not to talk about (remember, *asked* we didn’t sign anything). To that end, we’ll continue to bug Chet about this after Crash Course drops. I can tell you guys this though; Chet and the rest of the L4D team are still excited about the original four survivors and working the stories of L4D and L4D2 together. To that end, Gabe told us that they’re working on a project that will bridge the stories of L4D and L4D2 and that it will be available through steam (I believe the word ‘free’ was tossed in there too, just don’t quote me on it). It was also hinted at that they were doing something for the Mod community; Agent of Chaos heard more about that though. As for ‘Cross-Play’, it’s the same story that’s been given to other news outlets like Shacknews: http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=1193&page=2 They say they’re working on it. We weren’t shown anything to that end but it’s probably just code at this point anyway and as was said to us and Shacknews, it’s not going to be known how they’ll do it until closer to release. I’m not going to say I have faith in “Cross Play” one way or another at this point, because we didn’t see anything on the subject. What’s hard to convey here is how open and honest the staff were. There’s no feeling that they’re trying to hide anything from you and often you hear “oh wait, can we talk about that?” after something slips out. Some of you will say “of course, they want you to feel like that, it’s a trap!” but it does not come across like that. They really do seem to want to work on both games in tandem. To be honest, there’s still more to write about, but I’d prefer to answer specific questions about L4D related things as opposed to a massive wall of text. So if you guys have questions, please either post them on the forums ( http://www.l4d2boycott.proboards.com ) or email them to l4d2boycott@gmail.com . I will be answering questions from the community on Friday or Saturday, depending on volume. Believe it or not, talking to these folks in person and getting answers about future DLC is at least some progress for the group. At this point though, enough of calling myself and Agent ‘traitors’. It doesn’t matter what course of actions we could have taken, or how ‘assertive’ we were with Valve, you folks would not be pleased. If we refused the invitation, you would say we aren’t doing our jobs. Accepting an invitation got us called ‘Traitors’. Complaining and whining is not going to get you anywhere, because nothing we could possibly do would make you happy and I’m through trying. So again, please email or post questions and I will answer to the best of my ability. Please leave cursing/foul language out though; I’d like to copy/paste your questions directly without having to edit that stuff out. -Walking_Target (This has been my own thoughts, opinions and views of what happened and does not include Agent of Chaos’ opinions or views) |

What do they mean by crossplay?
Does that mean that players of L4D2 and L4D1 get to play together? |

QUOTE(frags @ Sep 12 2009, 05:47 PM) Yes because if they can make l4d campaigns playable in l4d2 it is possible to retain the community than to split them up. Thats great, does that mean i get to play as the L4D1 cast then?If buying L4D2 also gives the content of L4D1,it's pretty much fukken sold to me. |

QUOTE(Cheesenium @ Sep 12 2009, 05:49 PM) Thats great, does that mean i get to play as the L4D1 cast then? I don't think they will do that. If you own l4d then you can get l4d content in l4d2. No you cant play with other survivors in l4d2 campaign without a mod or some sort of hack.If buying L4D2 also gives the content of L4D1,it's pretty much fukken sold to me. Remember the survivors have specific dialogue that are triggered with scripts in campaigns. But i'm sure the community will find a way to change the models etc. |

Left 4 Dead 2 banned in Australia
Posted Sep 16th 2009 9:50PM by John Callaham Filed under: FPS, Multiplayer, Left 4 Dead Series Oh boy. Here we go again. The government of Australia has elected to ban yet another high profile upcoming game from being sold in that country. According to Kotaku Australia, the country's Classification Board has decided not to give Valve's upcoming zombie co-op shooter Left 4 Dead 2. So far there's no word on why the game was banned. The original game, which came out a year ago, managed to get an MA15+ rating from the board. As we have mentioned many, many times before Australia does not have a rating higher than that which means any game with truly adult content cannot be sold there. Many games that were banned were later allowed to be sold after edits were made to their content. At the moment there's no word on what Valve and its publishing partner Electronic Arts plan to do about this situation. i guess cheesenium can forget about it XD |
