Liverpool poised to sign Johnson

QUOTE
Liverpool look to have won the race to sign England defender Glen Johnson after agreeing a fee in the region of £17m with Portsmouth.

Reds' boss Rafael Benitez is confident he has beaten off interest from Chelsea in the 24-year-old and expects to make him his first summer signing.

Manchester City had also registered an interest in Johnson, but it is believed Anfield is his preferred destination.

Benitez is now likely to sell Andrea Dossena to help fund the deal.

Johnson, who joined Portsmouth from Chelsea in a £4m deal two years ago, emerged as Benitez's prime target after having an outstanding season at Fratton Park last season.

Benitez is working within financial restrictions in the transfer market this summer, but it is understood Liverpool are still owed money from the deal that took Peter Crouch to Portsmouth last summer.

Spanish defender Alvaro Arbeloa could also be sacrificed to raise cash towards the Johnson deal, with Real Madrid being linked with an £8m move.

He has cemented a place as England's first-choice right-back under coach Fabio Capello and played in the two recent World Cup qualifying victories against Kazakhstan and Andorra.

Johnson signed a new four-year deal at Portsmouth in January, but club officials accepted they could not stand in his way if he was offered the opportunity to move a club playing in the Champions League.

It's helpless for liverpool... they have only 2 english starters currently, if they do not start to pool for english talents now, they will have a hard time when the 6+5 rule begins. so you can c the desperation for it...

Liverpool To Sign Pompey’s Glen Johnson - Real Madrid Star Saviola On His Way To Anfield?
Submitted by Alan James on Tue, 2009-06-16 18:04. Portsmouth, Liverpool Premiership Transfer News

Liverpool are reported to have secured the signature of England defender Glen Johnson after reaching agreement with Portsmouth over a fee thought to be in the region of £17m.

Reds' manager Rafael Benitez is positive that the 24-year-old will become his first summer signing after beating off interest from the right-back’s former club Chelsea.

Johnson, who went to Fratton Park from Chelsea for £4m two years ago, became Benitez's number one target following an outstanding season with Portsmouth and recent standout displays for England at right-back; a position he has made his own under coach Fabio Capello.

Speculation over Johnson’s future reached fever pitch following confirmation that Portsmouth had received a formal transfer offer for the England man. Portsmouth refused to reveal the identity of the club tabling the bid, but Liverpool and Chelsea were the two clubs rumoured to be favourites for Johnson’s signature.

Speaking on TalkSport last Friday, Portsmouth Executive Chairman Peter Storrie would not be drawn on which club Johnson would be joining, other than to say that Johnson wanted to play Champions League football, suggesting that the England right-back would be moving to one of the Premier League’s ‘Big Four’, with Liverpool and Chelsea thought to be favourites.

Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also reported to have made enquiries about the availability of Johnson, but Chelsea were considered Liverpool's principal challenger for the 24 year-old.

However, it is thought that Johnson’s preferred destination was always Anfield. This wouldn’t be a great surprise following the four frustrating seasons the player spent at Stamford Bridge before his move to Portsmouth.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is hoping to unveil the England international at Anfield in the coming days.

In further Anfield-related transfer news, Benitez is thought to be keen to sign the Argentina international Javier Saviola. The 27-year-old, who has scored 12 goals in 44 internationals, has failed to establish a regular first-team place at the Bernabeu, a situation that is only likely to get worse with the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo next season.

Liverpool are thought to be offering around £5m for the Madrid outcast.

Arsenal's Robin van Persie attracts Manchester United interest

Manchester United have been linked with a £20 million move for Arsenal forward Robin van Persie.

According to the Sun, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is a big fan of the 26-year-old Holland international and has been monitoring his situation at the Emirates, where he is yet to commit to a new contract.

Arsenal have reportedly tabled an improved deal of £80,000 a week, but Van Persie has still stalled, claiming he is more concerned with winning silverware than boosting his bank balance.

Recently, Van Persie said: "In the last four years I've won only one prize, the FA Cup, and that is too little. I want more.

"Financially the offer is fine but that is not everything to me. It's about my ambition and how that can be fulfilled."

Van Persie was signed by Arsene Wenger five years ago but, due to a run of unfortunate injuries, the Dutchman has made just 79 league starts in that period.

This, however, has not stopped the striker from being regarded as one of the most technically gifted players in the Premier League, nor has it prevented Ferguson from casting coveting eyes.

Reports suggest United are not the only club keeping tabs on Van Persie, with Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho interested in making a bid.

A Dutch source is quoted in the Sun as saying: "Robin loves it at Arsenal but he is getting to the age when he wants to win things.

"He knows that there are clubs interested in him and is waiting to see what happens."

i think if SAF fails to land Benzema, then he can try to sign RvP. not really a bad deal lah. 20m, proven in the EPL. has got killer left foot too. can take short range free kicks.

ARSENAL MEDICAL FOR VERMAELEN - REPORT
Ajax defender Thomas Vermaelen has claimed he will undergo a medical at Arsenal on Friday ahead of his proposed move to the Premier League.

Reports have strongly linked Vermaelen with a switch to the Gunners in recent weeks, although manager Arsene Wenger has yet to comment on the speculation.

The Belgium international's agent recently suggested an agreement was close, with a four-year contract said to be on the table.

Vermaelen has explained how he plans to head to North London at the end of this week as he looks to tie up a reported £10million switch.

"The signature is not there yet, but everything is in order," Vermaelen told Gazet van Antwerpen.

"On Friday I will fly to London to undergo a medical. Then I hope to sign."

He continued: "I feel so proud. Arsenal is a fantastic club, and as a child I watched them play.

"On Friday, if I go to Emirates Stadium I will be seriously impressed.

"This will be a big change in my life, next year I will suddenly be facing the best strikers in the world.

"This does not scare me, I will give everything my body has.

"This is one of the best days of my life."

His injury record is quite bad. Can't expect him to play 40-50 games every season. Guaranteed 10-15 goals however.

£20 mill is just too much for a potential Saha Mark II

EXCLUSIVE: City eye top four as Santa Cruz signs up for £18m

Manchester City have agreed an £18million deal to sign Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn as they begin to build a squad to break into the Premier League's top four.

Manager Mark Hughes will finally be reunited with the striker he wanted to bring with him from Rovers to Eastlands last summer in the first of several blockbuster signings before the end of August.

Santa Cruz will cost £15m, with the rest of the fee dependant on appearances and team success, but he is likely to have to compete for a place with Carlos Tevez - who is ready to reject Manchester United and Liverpool - and Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o next season.

City are confident they are making progress in their pursuit of two of the most respected goalscorers playing in Europe - despite Eto'o's exorbitant wage demands of £192,000-a-week after tax - as chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak continues to back Hughes in the transfer market.

The signing of Santa Cruz, who missed the end of last season with a knee injury, shows that the manager remains in charge of the club's transfer targets.

Al-Mubarak has admitted his frustration at the perception of City as a club who do not deserve a place at the game's top table. The Cruz deal highlights his reluctance to pay wildly inflated fees, as the initial figure is £5m short of the price Blackburn quoted them in January when their bids were unsuccessful.

Hughes first signed Santa Cruz for Blackburn from Bayern Munich for £3.8m in 2007 after he had fallen out of favour at the German club. He scored 23 goals for Rovers in his first season but suffered with injury last term after the Welshman had move on.
