I try to describe the itinerary as below:
Christchurch to Franz Josef - At Franz Josef u can do glacier hike, take the full day hike, half day not worth it
Franz Josef to Makarora - Makarora surrounded by mountains, only hikings to do here else nothing else to do, dead place
Makarora to Queenstown - QT the famous one lo, just go i-Site to browse thru gazillions of activities offered
Queenstown to Aoraki/Mt Cook - Mt Cook is damnn awesome, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. If got time, go do Hooker Valley Walk (~3-4hr return)
Mt Cook to Rangitata - ONLY thing to do in Rangitata is water rafting, else it's a dead place
hope it helps!

if u are those who like to plan and you MUST love maps, then u'll be better renting car and driving. with this way u can go to more 'hidden places' that the bus did not go.. the petrol there now i think around ~NZD2.20/litre. u will probably need a translated license (get at JPJ for RM10) or if u have international license then it's good.. and the road signs there are much much way too better!
if u just want to relax and rest ur mind from planning too much, then bus hopping is the way to go..

i think same case for CC-Greymouth.. if u like to plan and maybe explore Arthur Pass National Park, drive a car thru.. if u wan relaxation and enjoy the scenery, take the Tranzalpine train, heard many good comments about the train..

for food, so far i cook A LOT myself at hostels, it's the cheapest! if u want to eat out, probably the famous food in NZ is fish n chips, affordable usually around NZD5-7.. if u eat those chinese mix rice already around $8+

Good comments, I second the Franz Josef hike.

There are lots of things to do in Queenstown but they're pricey so be prepared to pay if you want to skydive or bungie jump. I've done my tandem skydive, lots of fun, was hoping to do an AFF license this week but the weather's not great where I am.

Also lala have you thought about doing a 1-day Milford Sound bus/cruise? I loved the place, it's amazing.

I personally loved Milford Sound but I drove there so we stopped by different places like mirror lake and around Monkey's Creek. The cruise itself is also amazing. I would recommend it but the drive from Queenstown is pretty damn far.

Can't recall what we did at Arthur's Pass, let me look through my pictures first biggrin.gif

No I don't have NZ or travel blogs, maybe I should. Lots of travelling the past few years. The only thing I missed out in NZ was the helicopter trip (too windy), the bungie jump at Kawarau river gorge (not approved) and visiting the rest of the north/south islands!

Enjoy your trip! If you're into LOTR then you can't miss some of the other places eg. Arrowtown and Twizel.

The two times I've been to NZ (or anywhere around the world to be exact), my family hires a car and we drive around wherever we want to go. It's much more convenient and comfortable.

For food, we always cook on our own. Buy from grocery stock and make our own food. So much more cheaper.

Hard to rent a car and cook your own food when you're travelling alone. I'm doing that right now in the US and I use the bus and train since it's so much cheaper.

But if you're travelling in a group then I completely agree.

I would say if you were travelling alone or in a pair, it would be best to just use public transports and eat outside, maybe cook some simple meals sometimes.
Or else rent car also won't be worth it. 2 person to a car only.

And yea, if it's a group. Especially group of 4 would be just nice to rent a car and travel around. smile.gif

I guess some of us would prefer to cook for ourselves instead. Some might just find it too troublesome. tongue.gif
