OMG My scorpion gave birth! What should I do????!!!!
Most of the scorpion available in the pet trade are mostly wild caught or being keep communally
It's not odd to find that your Scorpion suddenly gave birth after keeping it for 1year because their gestation period can range from 8-13months depending on their diet, environment and other factors
So this is what I do when I notice my Scorpion gave birth last year

Step1: Leave the mom alone until she finish giving birth
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Step2: To feed or not to feed?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Step3: Separating the scorpling
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

They are still quite fragile in 2nd instar and tend to die when they molt to 3rd instar
The key is to keep the substrate damp (Not wet!) and make sure your scorpling is hydrated to keep them survive
With this method i have successfully raised 30 scorpling to 2nd instar out of 31 scorpling, 1of them died cause felt from the mom's back

FAQ
Can I feed my scorpling before they molt?

When can i start feeding my scorpling?

What should I feed to my scorpling?

Disclaimer:
This method is only apply for Heterometrus and Pandimus Sp, for other sp, they need different care

QUOTE(akagidemon @ May 24 2009, 12:08 AM)
i was going thru the v1 and v2 thread and notice that alot of those people from the v1&2 are not anymore in v3. have they stopped keeping scorps?

and about educating. my frinds are all saying that 1 bite from the longimanus can kill me.

haih difficult to explain to them.

that is not including the superstition that the brother/mother/uncle scorpion will come and find me because taking one of the family away.
*
Alot senior ady stop this hobby cause working/ still keeping bt nt in forum anymore

QUOTE(rideon @ May 24 2009, 12:19 AM)
the one aros is displaying is a longimanus. Because at that time we cant name the sp well so some say its spinifer and some say its longimanus (its longimanus by the way) so he decided it should be a new sp.. so he names it LongimAROS....
*
Lol there are spinifer with longer chela actually
If compare2 the longimanus posted by akagi, really looks different nod.gif

QUOTE(akagidemon @ May 24 2009, 12:45 AM)
i have read that page before. so it is the same but i think a little more dramatic considering the pedes are not how shall i put it "cooperative". if you know what i mean.
*
Get a vial tat a lil bit bigger than ur pede, stuff in some tissue on the base and the side and place in front the pede
Gently push it inside
They love humid and dark area so there is a high chance for them to crawl into it

QUOTE(akagidemon @ May 24 2009, 01:53 AM)
"How do you control the water flow?Manually or by any other means?"

there is a slide controller that lets you adjust how many drops per minutes. you can open it up fully or adjust it to any time intervals that you want.

let say 1 drop every 20 seconds.

calculate the dehydration factor and the amount of fluid lost in a given time span and you can set the drops nicely.

"Have you tried sprinkler over dripper?"
well at the end of the line is a hypodermic needle. the needle makes it easy for me to position where i want the water dropslets to land without being intrusive to the scorps. to my knowledge there is no low preasure sprinklers or is there?

hmm maybe i can diy a sprinkler. see what i can think up.

Added on May 24, 2009, 2:13 amguys, any idea what to feed my scorps since they don't take meal worms. baby lizards, earthworms,??? anything.

crickets and pinheads are out of the question becoz i cant find any here.
*
I think u can ask leetplayer to sell u some superworm
If nt mistaken aros bought from him rite?

about the topic Scorpion Conservation.

i like it. how about "Scorpion Conservation Through Education".

i believe strongly that threads like this, aracnoboard, and other site dedicated to scorpions are on this mindset.

i am thinking .. under Conservation Concerns,

we could actually stop wild caught praticing and support captive breeding ..

in this way .. the population in the wild will not decrease due to over capturing for the demand of hobbist in scorpion keeping as it is slowly increasing ...

Let left the wild one alones and support only captive breed scorpions ....

juz my 2 cents ... smile.gif

totally agreed ...

i have heard and read article on over harvesting of wc scorpions which brought many sp near to extiniction on the area...
iit is a sad thing to hear..

themission on the l.s sp ....
i willbe trying to get some wc l.s ... atempt to breed them and release the poos backs at the same location where i find them but at the same time , releasing some fine sp. to hobbist to breed too to encourage on CB .. hoping in near future we does on relies on the wc of the sp ...

yes getting longimanus from rafiqos,

yup i know it small, temporary only,

dry yes, but i won't bother so much since this guy hangout inside the pool most of the time.

i've tried humid condition for the hs but seems like mites spreading is too much.

now a good question is can i mix the longimanus and longimaros together?

What happen if you buy ur scorpion that you thought was a longimanus,

turn out to be a spinifer, some more WC.

1. You give them new ID to make your heart feel better, rclxms.gif
2. You get rid of those mites! unsure.gif

user posted image

Equipment needed.
user posted image

I found out that this is the best way to hold a scorpion, grab the pincer so it won't get a chance to pinch so much (though i still got a few snap out of my clumsiness)

user posted image

The best thing about this position is the scorpion eyes are covered by our hand so it feels dark ad like burrow hence it won't be that aggressive,

user posted image

Well what about the telson?

This is when the tape will come in handy, tape it all around so it won't use the tail to get rid of you the hard way,

I observe that during the last two hours when the scorpion got totally annoyed will they use it.

I also found out that under the comb like structure is the favourite place for mites, so i korek all especially between the legs and segments.

It took me almost 2 hours for one scorpion, now feel light headed already lol

Lesson: Go get a captive breed, support captive breed all the way!

Bad thing about WC: the parasite can jump to your other collection,

so what I did is to all my WC, I apply vaselin on surrounding the terrarium and quarantine it from the other collection.

Hope this helps! whistling.gif

Good luck.

Warning: Do not attempt on end species scorpion that have freaking potent venom, especially if you are a newbie, if you wish to carry on, all risk are subject to yourself, so be responsible, your life is more precious than your pets though all of us know we cannot live with it sweat.gif

Play safe!

Unless the substrate are very very very wet till flood, i dun believe mycosis happening on afs
Usually only occur on desert scorp but there are exception but very rare

More interesting fact to share
QUOTE
Regarding size variation in Buthids
Especially buthids, do not have a fixed number of molts to adulthood, but ranges. As for example: Centruroides gracilis females may already become adults in the the 6th, 7th or 8th instar, and males may do so from the 4th-9th instar; as scorpions do not molt anymore once they have reach adulthood (= sexual maturity), their adult size strictly depends on which instar they belong to. That's why there are "small", "normal" and "large" adults, and even there may be "dwarf" or "giant" ones. By the way, the adult size is not dependant on that of the parents, so "small" adults may produce scorplings which will become later "normal"or "large" adults, and viceversa.

Regarding variation in coloration
Variation in coloration in scorpions and again, especially in Buthids, is not uncommon. Coloration can vary between populations from different areas, within the same population from one area and even within one litter of young, think about B.jacksoni, that has brown young (chocolate morph) and typical (orange) young or T.nematochirus.
In general there is a relationship between coloration of the scorpion and the substrate it lives on. Dark scorpions often occur on more rocky, earth kind of substrate and lighter scorpions on sandy substrates. But there are exceptions and this is not some kind of rule.

This is why size and coloration are no steady taxonomical characters in Buthids and that's why you cannot ID a species from the family Buthidae on size and coloration alone.

Credit: http://venomlist.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=24123

It lokks like some buthidae can be sexually mature b4 molting to their adulthood hmm.gif
This explained the male Junceus tat sexually mature at 6instar while female at 7th

They have low metabolism, remember

Bout the crix, u can feed them with organic oats, turtle food, or mix of those two and roll some tissue ball and wet them, throw in to let them suck the water out of the tissue ball

dunno about that.. But the 1st pregnant female i already separated from them months ago and now noticing that the 2nd female in the colony is geting bigger ( havent feed them for the past 2 weeks coz 2 of them looks huge!) Now this male scorp always moving around the tank and climbing the ceiling. If the time is right you can see it sort of shaking back and forth if another scorp is nearby... should i buy another female scorp for him?

Added on May 25, 2009, 5:42 pmjust to add.. me 1st pregnant female has dug a narrow but deep burrow inside the driftwood that i placed with her.. is it an indication?

and i think my v. spinigerus is molting.. the tail curl upwards and the body risen.. let see in an hours time..

easy answer to the flame war.

this is how we do it.

they are living in temperate condition so they don;t have such problems with mites.

on the other hand we who live in the tropical climates have to deal with it constantly.

yes,

now I understand how Malaysia are united, we all have to deal with the same problem: mites, yikes!

hahaha,

and I also see another perceptive how forum are spreads,

people in scorpion forum are more on the orthodox way where they stick to an old way where they consider practical, and for some they are really obsessed with it until they are up to a level for a people who are against them, they are stupid.

while on the other hand,
people in venomlist are all experimentist that are open to possibilities and new discoveries.

Added on May 25, 2009, 5:57 pmowh and what not, what does they mean by the mites in the substract.

For me a person who are that bad in language have trouble understanding others thought and think freely eventhough they are living in a democracy country,

but that guy was a switz I remmbered.

Added on May 25, 2009, 6:00 pm

I don't put any stress in the scorpion, and as I said, only approaching two hours does the scorpion start using the tail.

So if the procedure can be conduct fast, I am confident there should be no sweat.

You judge.

but come to think, they are nocturnal, well freeze them first.

for the civet cat i'm going to keep it because i have tied to release it 3 times and all failed when it return to the house asking for food.

for the scorps i am going to breed them for conservation purposes.

the people here in sibu still practice slash and burn farming method. i am against it because it is not environmental friendly and also the output from that system is not a lot.

not so cool.

They practice it here too, when I realize it's already too late and only the smell of the smoke is what left from afar

All doing fine, none died except the 1 i accidentally squash when packing to send to lester
If ur setup is still same with last time in the exhibition, i think u put too much fiber type coco peat
Those cant really hold moisture
Make it simple, a delicup with substrate and a piece of bark laying flat on substrate
Drill 4 tiny air hole, the moisture wont dry so fast

Water Evaporative Cooling Method

Sharing my Dexterity to Busy People  tongue.gif

I have read many people asking about humidity of the splings, so I thought of sharing my silly technique of keeping it humid. I'm sure many have known of it, just sharing anyway for those who might have missed out.

How to do it?

Keep your T in the deli cup, then keep it in a container that have little quantity of water. The water in the container should be an automatic regulator of humidity to your T in the deli cup. You would want to close the container because it could prevent mosquito from breeding. Remember to make holes to the reservoir for air ventilation.

Graphic Indulgence

There's no trick in it

People have been using this technique to incubate eggs, so it just another application in slightly different dimension.

Since I'm always away from home and don't have the opportunity to mist them often, this method sure helps regulating the humidity and supply little water droplets for the T to drink, especially for the splings.

NOTE: Some tarantula might need different humidity, so use this method only for T requiring high humidity.

Hope it helps,

my enclosure

rideon. for your red ant problem try getting the ant poison that is in powder form. it shouldn't be to expensive. about rm1.50 to rm2 per packet.

follow the ant to where they are nesting or just pour it around your scorps enclosure. they will go for the poison. when they bring it back to the nest the whole colony should have died in a days time.

for the poison.. im kinda have some reservation on that. I place all my scorps and their feeders near to each others. So if i placed the poison, it might go through the tanks or the crix or mealworms.. if that happen, me without notice feed them to me scorp and well it will die.. i dunno.. correct me if im wrong. I used one of those spray thing.. always spray out side the area.. but it still coming ..

im suspecting that one of the 5 l.a (not inc puny) are gravid coz i just checked it a min ago (it has been long that i havent checked on them) and its huge.. no food in the tank coz i just changged its substrate.. so hopefully will have many many punies...

if your scorps and feeders are on a rack then you can place the rack farther away from the walls and put the poison at the legs of the rack.

if you don;t want to use the poison method then you can always use the bowl of water technique. just put you scorps enclosure in a shallow dish that is filled with water.

unless the ants are really determine to get to your scorps then this should be ok. but i have seen kamikaze ants that sacrifice themselves so that others could climb on their back and on to the mission objectives.

i did that before and they still comes in.. the main attraction to these ants are the crix and mealworms.. if i placed it further away like in another room them it wont come in. But since i have limited space in my room and in the house i placed all of them in a rack..the scorpions at the top and the feeders at the bottom... and yesterday i got a surprice a new threat...
a mice... hm.... looks like i have to reintroduce the mice trap...

But since i have limited space in my room and in the house i placed all of them in a rack..the scorpions at the top and the feeders at the bottom... and yesterday i got a surprice a new threat...

i really think that you should place your crix and meal worms farther away. they are attracting to many scavengers. you can always buy meal worms and crix but a dead scorp:

hahaha. if a dino came call me.

i will catch it and breed it.

hahaha.

what i fear is the mice or i think what you have is the Rattus rattus.
if that fellow is there then it can chew the plastic containers and worse the scorps can escape if it overturns the enclosure.

you guys wouldn't believe it.

i just got myself another longimanus. but this one is really old i think.

the telson is dark red and the pincers are really strong. injured my thumb when pick it up.

i notice that the scorpion is lacking the stinger. the sharp part like it broken off and also a few of the pectinal teeth are missing. looks like it had went through a rough life.

my friend was the one who alerted me.

no idea what sex it is.

can anybody post a picture of the mites that usually infest the scorpions?

i want to do a check on all of my scorps.

Anybody of you aware of a scorpion being used as a branding logo?

Here is the one. The Abarth is the tuning company for Fiat cars.

it should be a great display scorp because it doesnt have a complete telson. so i can educate people about scorps in my first aids lectures.

i really cant see anything trying to get in trouble with a scorpion this big.

but life is life i guess.

what bothers me is the incomplete telson.

i guess it must have been surviving by pinching its prey to death.

because my thumb and fore finger doesn't look to good after it pinch me multiple times when i was trying to secure it.

the fingers are bleeding slightly and are full of scars.

as far as i know red bulbs are ok.. read it somewhere in venomlist...if florescent lights it will act differently to dark. white lights tends to blind them even further so i think using other colors than florescent it will be ok.. but dont use blacklight/uv light.. that will have an impact on them...

the one exoterra is a heating bulb (all bulbs emits heats when turn on) usually used for reptiles. For scorp i think is ok... but might aswell get a normal one as its much much much cheaper and it has the same effects.. i tend not to use any bulbs as electricity bill rocketing high... lol

from my understanding .. do correct me if i am wrong .
scorpion can't see red light ...

therefore a low voltage low amp led (red) would be nice...
it will be able to provide enough light for us to see yet ... not for the scorpion , hence abt to
observe their activities............

same theory for the black light ... we will be able to see them glow... smile.gif

i believe a 24vdc led would be prefect ...as amp compustion will be veri low like in mA ????
normal AA or AAA size battries could last for many hours to come ...
it can be tap to a transformer to be plug into the power supply ......

With a little help of resistor to the led.... the led lifespan could last say 10000hrs lifespan ?????

hope this information is gd for thoses wiling to try it out ..

p/s : do throw in one for me if workable ... lol ..... sweat.gif

yup it is workable. you can buy the kit at electronic shops. but the kits come with a normal led and you will need a dozen of them to get the luminescences that you want.

nice idea. will try it soon. i'm googling up the circuits.

no need that accurate la. our climate already guarantees a 80% plus humidity at any given time.

i just need a rough idea of the humidity in the enclosures. thats all.

and considering that i have a tight lid enclosure i'm sure the humidity is at least around 80%

hehe.. crits are alwiz like dat one.. even just bought them for an hour, oledi got 1 or 2 died oledi...

so, crits must be consumed on 1 go.. if they are too many of them for ur pets, then just free them, to avoid smell n flies.. and to avoid the ones still alive get infected in any kind of disease or parasites.. which is not good 4 ur pets!

i believe cricket need good ventilation fo rthem to survive longer ....
water gel could be used to provide moisture and water ...
food wise ... maybe dry oats.. smile.gif

Lol who ask u bought sooooo much haha
Btw u have2 remove the dead one, else the scuddle flies will always be there
They are after the dead 1 to lay eggs inside and if u din take out soon u ll see maggot crawling inside
I saw ur method of keeping them, looks no problem bt maybe u bought too much and the tank is too small so not enuff ventilation?
Its juz a wild guess

well the injured 1 i got yesterday was a male. i really can't say if the same male mated with both female or the males had 1 partner each.

does anybody knows if a single male can mate with 2 females in one night?

one of the fellows at work today spotted a large python in the work area.
called me and say it was an emergency but didn't tell me what it was.
when i got there he said it was a large python about 3 meters in lenght.

i said to him" gila ka, u think i'm the crocodile hunter is it".

but i'm keeping on eye on the area where the snake was sighted. who knows, maybe i will post up a picture of me with the reptile in a few days. if i survive the encounter.

don't believe la the tv. crazy job jumping on a pyton. if the head turns towards you when ur jumping on it then ur good as dead.

going to stalk it and see the behavior and then make a plan.

see what threat the python pose or maybe it is just passing through.

Well its quite simple...straight to the point...first time is always fun to watch...but after a few...its actually quite a burden...especially if they start it at 12 am and u need to work the next day...

Be reminded that u shud leave the loving couple alone...or she will not take the sperm pack...and u will wait for 9 months in vain...(if its a heterometrus spp)

i did thought of that as my neighbor is doing some renovation might just 'steal' some... but i dunno if the sand is ok for the scorp... want to mix it with some dry coco fibre so the scorp can burrow and keep the hole intact...

anyone have a better idea... coz sand alone is too soft. It can make a hole stay intact so have to mix it with something.... anyone have any ideas? read in scorpforum and venomlist that people tend to mix their sand with some sort of powdered clay, bensonite or something like that...

if you want to experiment,

make sure free of foreign substance.

sands are basically silica so if it is purified silica then probably no problem lol.

seriously y risk ur valueable scorps.

U know the purification method is quite fussy and hard, plus no insurance rite?

btw if u still insist, go with less end species.

well, mix from different source, is quite risky?

because not all sand are sillicate, u must remember that some might also contain a free moving cation which is metal that could leak to from cation exchange fairly to different electronegativity right?

especially in different sand vastly separated geographically.

Just my none cents.

not that difficult to take care. just make sure you make the enclosure as close as possible to the natural habitat and it will be fine.

i started from 1 scorpion now i have 5 in 2 weeks time.

so the the learning curve for me was difficult at first then it is ok.

depends.
if the scorps are eating them faster then they could breed then temp storage. if the scorpions are not eating them then breed.

got to go. they are going to open a store that haven't been open for some time.
wan to see got what animals inside.

goodluck sam,

but I have to say mass even for mass production, the key to successful breeding is patience,

I mean big one!

btw so far I have yield only about 15+- baby zophobas morio for about 40++ beetle sacrificed.

btw I u should know that the they should be kept in dry condition, no need to mist at all, provide moisture only via potato, that's what I did.

aros, ur using coco fiber as the substrate. i have observed that meal worms like to burrow. the shop keeper said to me i can use oats as the substrate because they will eat the substrate. and she also told me don't give to much moisture or they will die.

any tips on breeding them?

Whether u wan2 use coco fiber o nt is up2 u
It doesnt do any good to me imo
I use organic oats as substrate and feed vege and potato occasionally and i have plenty of babies
Juz separate the pupa from the worms cause they often eat the pupa if leave it there too long

to breed basically u separate the supers first, let it become beetle.

Once you come to that stage only it will be relevant for me to explain the next step because if I do now, you will probably forget. tongue.gif

it takes more than a month to turn into a beetle.

ryo I believed urs is tenebrio molitor rite?

shhhhhhut up.

hahaha.

superworm is dang hard to breed.

and I use coco peat because I can easily get it compare to oat lol.

Oat expensive gilak!

so thats how u guys get mealworms babies.. i've trying again and again.. used moist coco peat and nothing produced. Just make them dead.. Not i might just change it to dry one.. got 5 beetls already

Rule of thumb when rearing mealworm is to make the enclosure as dry as possible
Provide moisture by vege or potato
But my way is let them cannibalis each others

Ur afs molting?
If the substrate is already damp then u dun really need2 mist it
Unless if its bone dry and it looks like it cant make it then yes, u can spray on the substrate/wall

u guys sure get up and early.

woke up and check the new enclosure. sure enough, traces of substrate in the water dish..

one of my males keep sitting outside the hide. i made a really big hide for him and his mate but he isn't staying inside. i observed it for almost 12 hours already starting from 6pm to 7 am today.

when i first saw him he was munching down a super mealworm. then this morning i still see him just sitting infront of the hide. the female thou is staying inside the hide not wanting to come out.

i'm thinking of the same thing but before they were in the same hide also.

or maybe he just like the new enclosure and wants to stay out.

the hide is really big. i can fit 2 scorps more if i wanted too.

i'm really getting worried about the up coming raya holidays. i don't mind the food becoz i can alwyas power feed the scorps and let them fast but i'm worried about the humidity of the substrates.

the drip system is a bit fussy. if the condensation is high then it is not a problem but if the condensation is low then it might get to moist and mites or what not will thrive.

i'm experimenting with a false bottom setup that can hold about 2 liters of water. want to see how long does the substrate moistness can last till it is bone dry.

Nth much to worry, they are hardy enuff
Aside from drinking scorpion also get their moisture from their food
So when u power feed them, they get lots of moisture as well
Unless ur leaving them more than a month else shouldnt be a problem

lol.... If u have false bottom setup perhaps the humidity will maintain
U can always bring them with u, keep in smaller container and bring along with u
Btw, quote from the 1st page FAQ answer
"They can survive for more than twelve months without food as well as they do not need to drink for months"

Dun worry smile.gif

i have no worries about the raya festivals... well almost.. i'll b leavinf them at least for 2 weeks. 1 week in johor and another in kelantan.. hmmm. south and north.. and im driving this year.. damnx.. well i think it b ok if 14days.. just gut load them and mist/pour water to the substrate before you go and leave them on their own.. hope no mites and bad things to happen though.. bringing them with u.. i dont think thats a recommendation.. as i know if u do they will die coz u'll b traveling here and there and if u bring them with u they could get over stress...

a bit difficult considering i don't have any formal training in html and also i'm up to my neck in work.

don't worry it will be up and running soon enough. the gawai holidays are near so i can curi-curi masa to finish it.

chill out guys. a little fun don;t hurt as long as we know when to stop.

continuing my discussion with hyorinmaru, now both of my scorps are out of the hide and chilling out in the enclosure. the male is on the mating rock while the female has burrowed in reverse in to the substrate until only the pincers and head is left visible. she is acting like a lion ant.

They can easily take down a mealworm or medium size cricket
At the 1st few weeks after their molt u can feed killed mealworm
After that u can try live 1 and see them hunting
Anw some AFS have 40-50+ babies, 33 is not really much hmm

I can ask few hikers for the permit, but surely you won't got a permit to herp.

But I guess it is not hard to get the permit, the hard part would be to find a guider that can suits your need.

U can put it in a clear container with no substrate and use torchlight to see if u can see some round white color mites sticking on ur scorp especially joint area
If u see any then tell us i tell u wat to do hmm

Say if u saw mites tat doesnt move sticking on it, get urself vaseline and stick cotton bud from pharmacy
Take a plastic container and drill a hole tat juz big enuff for the cotton bud to go in
Apply some vaseline on the cotton bud, throw ur scorp in the container and use the cotton bud to dip away the mites

Another method im not too sure bt i think something like put ur afs in bone dry environment until those mites died off since they feed on moisture
