Which package are the best choice from pana's promotion?
1. Th-P42S10k + DMP-BD 60 = RM4,999
2. TH-P42S10K + SC-PT870 = RM5,899
or P42S10K + SC-PT570 = RM5,499.

The plasma tv TH-P42S10K Review
The Bluray Player DMP-BD60 Review

Today, I go to Queensbay Mall Penang and saw this model. This is a very exciting deal.

For sure, the best deal is the Plasma TV + BD Player + HDMI Cable.

The Plasma TV priced at RM4499, with top up RM500 to get the BD player, resulting in RM4999. The normal price for this BD Player is RM1999, which save around RM1500.

I went to Harvey Norman, Senq and CSH (a Panasonic Dealer).

At each shop, I compare the TV side by side with the X10 model.

For DVD, for sure, X10 and S10 both perform very well, even if compare with the 42PY800 model, you hardly see any different on these set, detail and color reproduction is very good.

But the guy at Senq let me view the BD, play with the bundled DMP-BD60 player. He play the I-Robot movie, I can say, if you don't stand too close, you are very hard to see any different between S10 and X10

You will notice that the S10 model used a less reflective glass panel, which reduce glare. Compare side by side with X10, S10 really reduce much more reflection from fluorescent light, as witness in the shop.

And for sure, S10 is a little bit more detailed than X10, because it is a Full HD model.
S10 also produce a little bit more smoother picture if compare to X10.

The major different here, as said in CNET review, is the color accuracy. I have witness this, S10 have problem with green color, which is over saturated, and cannot be adjusted, resulting the whole picture more greenish in color, and darker if compare to X10, while the X10 color is far more natural.

So, is depend on your eye to judge which one you really like, I prefer X10 natural color, and also prefer S10 detail and picture smoothness. But S10 is a better deal, the bundled BD Player is a good player.

The DMP-BD60 is Profile 2.0-compliant, can decode all HD Audio currently available, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD master audio, which is a 7.1 channel surround. It is also a DVD upscaling player, which I also witness this as the same time as the salesman also play DVD for me to refer, it is a whole new experience with upscaled DVD. It also can play Youtube video via internet, you can plug the Ethernet cable to the player to enjoy Youtube, or other extra content offer by BD Live. At last, it can play MP3, AVCHD, JPEG, and have SD card slot.

For RM4999, you cannot go wrong with this. If the Greenish color is not your concern, this is the best offer available now. I was told that the BD Player offer is very limited, so have to hurry to get it.

At last, Harvey Norman offer 3 year warranty, Senq offer 2 year warranty, and CSH offer 5 year warranty.
Harvey Norman said can pay RM300 for booking if afraid the BD Player offer is end, the booking last for 3 month.
If really don't want to buy, you can change the RM300 with other electrical production, but sure no refund. Senq can get around RM4849 with BD player. CSH no discount, but offer 5 year Panasonic warranty, with no extra charges.

I think I must fast to make decision now, budget is tight.

Is this greenish issue can easily visualize? Let say, if my viewing distance is at 10 feets, can we really see it?

If it is 10 feet, you won't notice it as green, you will see the whole picture is darker.

The greenish actually make the picture look darker, especially the white and blue color, which is over saturated to green color.

You only can notice the greenish if you stand too close, about 1 meter, you will see some near dark, or near dark green color.

If you compare side by side with X10, you can easily see the different.

Hi Alan

Great review.

I too have had a chance to view the TH-P42S10K with the DMP-BD60.

But unlike you, have a chance to review the said TV with a Samsung Series 5 Full HD LCD tv.

The Samsung TV looks VERY SHARP and CRISP (Transformer 1, any desert scene) but when viewing night scenes (Underworld 1) the scenes appear VERY grainy

Switching over to the TH-P42S10K, the scene although not as sharp (Transformer), overall everything looks more natural (the night scenes in Underworld 1 and 3 is to be seen to be believe).

Now that I have pointed out the difference between LCD and Plasma, the major issue I initially had with the TH-P42S10K was banding issue.

I was watching Fantastic 4 where they were travelling to the space station before the cosmic ray storm, as the space craft approached the space station, the afterburners were different shades of white, to my horror, the gradient of whites were not smooth but different bands of white!

Was crushed, thought that I had found my dream FHD TV/Blu-Ray player

Have expressed my concern to my friend (the Pana Shop owner)

He asked me to give him a little bit of time to tweak the TV.

I did a little research online pertaining to the banding issue and it turned out the Greater the TV's capacity to contrast, the more severe the banding issue is (I cannot remember the exact contrast capability of the TV, but somewhere along the line of 1:2000000, pls correct me if I'm wrong)

I return a week later after he had used the Spyder Color Correction solution on the TV and the banding issue had greatly diminish

BD disc like BARAKA, Underworld 1 - 3, Transporter 2 - 3, Fifth Element (Remastered), Transformer and Hulk (Ang Lee), all looked great (some better then others, depending on disc)

Because I didn't have the TH-P42X10K next to it, I really didn't see a "greenish" issue (maybe the color correction solution is THAT good)

As for the Blu-Ray player, I played and original Fantastic 4 DVD compared to the Blu-Ray Fantastic 4, I cannot see much of a difference, which leads to two possible coclusion

a) The Video Upscale of the BD player is fantastic

b) Fantastic 4 DB is mediocre

(it had been suggested by a very popular BD reseller on the Low Yat forum that the later is true)

But playing BD disc (Region A and Region Free) is a breeze

My two sens worth

Maybe those who have electric and electronic knowledge can help me with my question:

I notice that the S10 power consumption is so much higher (350W) compared to X10 (285w). Does the number means there will be a noticeable increase on my electricity or am I just too concern about the numbers. The S10 has the same power consumption of a 50" X10 plasma! sweat.gif I thought NeoPDP plasma is suppose to use less electricity??

S10 number is higher because of its 2.6 times more pixels than X10.
But when you compare the power of earlier Generations FullHD 42" model of G11 TH-42PY800H (475W) or G10 TH-42PY700H (527W), the 2009 G12 PDP panel use in S10 has improved power efficiency !

The S10 panel is listed as Generation 12 (G12) PDP, while higher series G panel is listed as G12 NeoPDP.

Specs on cnet report
Checking out the specs carefully and press release, local TH-P42S10K (S series) has never been identified as using NeoPDP panel with double efficiency tech, only that its circuit and drive units are upgraded for 2009 release together with true NeoPDP panel G series. Note that the S10 panel has lowered sub-field drive to 550Hz and Native CR to 30,000:1 but still has improved Moving Pic Resolution to full 1080 lines.

IMHO this current limited offer of S10 series could be one way for Panny factory to clear out first/early batch of new G12 PDP panels with upgraded latest electronics that still gives it some slightly improved specs over last year Full HD models.

Well, maybe the set I view is not tuned to optimum setting, so that the color is not that great.
But the picture mode of the set that I view is set to "Dynamic", well just maybe, the default setting is not that good.

I dunno whether it is a "NEO Plasma" or not, but it do have an "Eco Mode", which also available on X10. This mode utilizes a photo sensor to measure the ambient light conditions in the room and adjusts the panel brightness accordingly. The resulting picture, however, is dimmer than other picture mode. This also in turn, maybe more power saving.

Actually, I not only view this set beside X10, but also view beside the TH-L37G10K Panasonic G Series Full HD LCD, and the old PV80.

These set, X10, S10, PV80 and the G10 LCD, all look great on the BD60. Like I already said, the only main different here is the color. The G10 LCD is the brightest among all, X10 color is most natural.

The "Greenish", err.... only is more visible on light color such as white and light blue color, and is only been noticeable, if compare to brighter plasma, such as X10, and LCD TV.

I really notice this, because the BD version I-Robot movie, the color on the robot, which I seen as white + blue color on X10 and the G10, turn out to be a dimmer and darker color in S10. The white is not show as white, and the blue is not show as blue, but become little green or cyan.

But if you don't compare to other set, this set Picture Quality is one of the best among other in this price point.
Just my humble opinion.

Hi AlanYee,

Good review and info.

I'm also tempted to get either X10 or S10. Still can't make any decision yet. Of course the S10 with BD player is the best package, but with this greenish issue, I really need to carefully consider.

I heard there is a warehouse sale this weekend at Harvey Norman. BTW, I'm in Penang. Maybe we can meet up. PM me. Thks.
