Hi Alan

Great review.

I too have had a chance to view the TH-P42S10K with the DMP-BD60.

But unlike you, have a chance to review the said TV with a Samsung Series 5 Full HD LCD tv.

The Samsung TV looks VERY SHARP and CRISP (Transformer 1, any desert scene) but when viewing night scenes (Underworld 1) the scenes appear VERY grainy

Switching over to the TH-P42S10K, the scene although not as sharp (Transformer), overall everything looks more natural (the night scenes in Underworld 1 and 3 is to be seen to be believe).

Now that I have pointed out the difference between LCD and Plasma, the major issue I initially had with the TH-P42S10K was banding issue.

I was watching Fantastic 4 where they were travelling to the space station before the cosmic ray storm, as the space craft approached the space station, the afterburners were different shades of white, to my horror, the gradient of whites were not smooth but different bands of white!

Was crushed, thought that I had found my dream FHD TV/Blu-Ray player

Have expressed my concern to my friend (the Pana Shop owner)

He asked me to give him a little bit of time to tweak the TV.

I did a little research online pertaining to the banding issue and it turned out the Greater the TV's capacity to contrast, the more severe the banding issue is (I cannot remember the exact contrast capability of the TV, but somewhere along the line of 1:2000000, pls correct me if I'm wrong)

I return a week later after he had used the Spyder Color Correction solution on the TV and the banding issue had greatly diminish

BD disc like BARAKA, Underworld 1 - 3, Transporter 2 - 3, Fifth Element (Remastered), Transformer and Hulk (Ang Lee), all looked great (some better then others, depending on disc)

Because I didn't have the TH-P42X10K next to it, I really didn't see a "greenish" issue (maybe the color correction solution is THAT good)

As for the Blu-Ray player, I played and original Fantastic 4 DVD compared to the Blu-Ray Fantastic 4, I cannot see much of a difference, which leads to two possible coclusion

a) The Video Upscale of the BD player is fantastic

b) Fantastic 4 DB is mediocre

(it had been suggested by a very popular BD reseller on the Low Yat forum that the later is true)

But playing BD disc (Region A and Region Free) is a breeze

Would this improve the PQ on Astro channels? I don't suppose ALL current AVR models have upscaling/deinterlacing capability? Still shopping for a decent AVR, and getting confused.  smile.gif

Actually, have seen KH-P42S10K in the shop with astro connected.

The Panasonic Viera chip does a decent job of cleaning up (digital noise reduction) Astro's signal

Have ordered a set. SHould arrive on the 13/06/09 nod.gif

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the info. I will try to check with other china-man shops and compare the price before making any decision.
Question is, do I really need a BD60 player included in the 42S10 package since the discs are still expensive.
I also consider only the 42X10 unit without package.
*
I have to agree with Alan

If you have a good collection of DVD [especially D9 ones] the DMP-BD60 upscale feature should give you close to 720p images

Tha means better picture quality then what you have now.

The Panasonic promo which bundle the KH-P42S10K + DMP-BD60 is a pretty good deal for now.

Try a Panashop and see if you can arm twist them down to RM4,650 and below tongue.gif

Anyone has S10 properly calibrated?
I am still looking for the setting in AVS forum.
Don't seem to have S10 calibration setting at the moment.
Appreciate sifu's input on this.
Thanks in advance.

My friend promised me thet he would Spyder Calibrate my KH-P42S10K.

But will only get me set on the 13th June

Will post the calibration figures after that if anyone is still interested. nod.gif

He is using Spyder3Pro which I think is pretty good.

When I first tested the KH-P42S10K, there were very obvious banding issue (Fantastic 4 BD, scene 3 if I'm not mistaken, when the team is approaching the space station, just before the cosmic storm. The Space craft afterburner were different bands of white, instead of the smooth gradient), because of the TV's high contrast.

After he spyder calibrated the TV the banding is way less obvious, also tested out BD like Baraka (amazing picture quality), Underworld Trilogy (dark scenes were fantastic, the amount of details), so for me the Spyder3Pro worked. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I shd be able to calibrate one soon, if the owner wants to share settings its up to him.

Spyder might need to watch out, there are known problems with some models when calibrating plasmas..

The problem with the Spyder2 is not the actual capability of the sensor itself but variability in quality from the factory. Spyder Pro is better because it is built to a tighter tolerance but still there are many people who report problems with it.

It would be better to get a X-Rite Display2 for this purpose.

Banding? Plasmas rarely have banding due to higher gradients then the LCDs...I do not have the BD FF only FF2, need to check it out.

If it worked for you, then it shd be ok. I believe the calibrator shd know what he was doing. Did he calibrate the grayscale in the service menu? How was the gamma curve?
*
I didn't actually sit in when he was doing the calibration work.

When he delivers my TV on the 13th, will look see what he does and share with you if you are interested. tongue.gif

Do we need to wait for plasma to break in first before we can calibrate it?
*
Wow, you have asked a VERY valid question.

There is a very good website that talks about Calibrating your Plasma Tv and also generally go throught DIY, Get Specialised DVD and hire a professional link (below is the hire a professional site, u can go to the others from that link)

http://www.thebestplasmatv.com/guides/hiri...ion-technician/

It doesn't even go into your question.

I'm at an advantage, because he is my friend, I can request that he does it when and after I buy... A meal or two is probably required! tongue.gif

Sorry, I don't have an exact answer to your question

shouldn't the source like BD player's HDMI go to amp then HDMI it to TV?

why BD to TV (HDMI) then to Amp (optical?)
*
A possibility is to allow any sound source connected to the tv and then be optically connected to the amp.

Just a suggestion

Hmm... was wondering if the TV Upscale the sound to optical quality b4 sending to amp thru optical cable!!? tongue.gif

I just have to add, testing it out first is believing

Panasonic can produce duds as well, believe me, I've seen them (the amplifier tv stand *groan*) nod.gif

Think the same. got to wait...just watch TV as usual will do.
Dun really care on AVS break in procedures as suggested by D-Nice.

1st 10 hours, plasma colour was horrible out of box.
Colour is improving now but saw one dead pixel on Tuesday night.
Pink colour pixel in middle of nowhere on the screen, Panasonic tech ppl came yesterday to check out.
They would revert to me next week on warranty. cry.gif

Oh dear. Do keep us posted on the progress of the warranty. Haven't plunk down the mulaas for my set. If they don't do something about it, make us you make as loud a fuss as possible. The Panasonic service department needs alot of motivation to fix stuff sometimes, especially when comes to new product. When it comes to servicing, Sony beats Panasonic (so much for super brand) hands down in Malaysia, but Sony's pricing......

Hi Guys/Gals

Got my TH-P42S10K and DMP-BD60 yesterday

Received it in the morning

Could only set it up in the late afternoon (around 5:30pm)

Everything plug in Via HDMI cable (eg DMP-BD60 is connected to the Yamaha RX-V663, Yamaha RX-V663 is connected to the TH-P42S10K)

Since there has been alot of discussion about the fact that the TV needs some time to break-in, I decided to hold off getting my friend to Spyder Calibrate the TV

I have a Sound and Vision Home Threatre Tune Up DVD laying around, some after half an hour use, calibrated the TV using that instead

The figures I ended up with (for those who are interested are)

Viewing Mode: Cinema
Contrtast: 60
Brightness 0
Colour: 69
Sharpness: 38
Tint: -2
Colour balance: Normal
Colour management: Off
x.v. Colour: Off

Colour seems natural and heat is norminal (warm but NOT toasty *there seem to be a major concern for one frequent forumer here, you know who you are* smile.gif )

Since then had watched

The Sniper (HK movie)
10,000 B.C.

Am currently watching

Stomp Live (talk about a noisy Sunday morning tongue.gif)

Am happy with the purchase so far nod.gif

The color is way too high for me. You just got your set there is still a long way to go for the break in process. Your settings might be useful for those who just got their S10. smile.gif

Thanks for the heads up

Er... you never got back to me about the list of bds I want...

Added on June 14, 2009, 12:04 pmHi Guys and Gals

Before I forget again, I wrote some pages back, that when I tested the TV in the shop, there were banding issue with the TV.

Since getting it I'm please to state on the record, that the banding issue were due to the source (eg Fantastic Four BD) and not the TV itself. The movie and test discs I have tested so far had not yield anymore banding issue (only the Fantaistic four disc showed banding issue, ever other disc I've tested so far, doesn't have the problem, hence the problem lays with the BD disc).

Please note tha in my previous post, I indicated that the warranty for the TH-P42S10K is 2 years

That is NOT true, it is actually 2 + 1 if you register online after purchase, you can also purchase an additional 2 years making it a total of 5 years icon_rolleyes.gif

Yes, in terms of Picture Quality, I really cannot justify paying 2k++ more for it (am an owner of the TH-P42S10K)

Hiho

My eyes are bleeding...

For those who notice, I've promised to post my TH-P42S10K setup after Spyder 3 calibration

And today's the day

Here is the results after calibration

View Mode: Normal
Contrast: 96
Brightness: 4
Color: 50
Sharpness: 50
Color Blance: Normal
Color Management: Off
x.v. Color: Off
Eco Mode: On
P-Nr: Off

At this point in time the images on screen (Baraka and Ratatouille) is popping out of the TV

Which explains my bleeding eyes....

Nope. No adjustment on the service menu.

Yes, I have the same feeling about the contrast value. Am afraid that my TV is not properly burn in yet (about 50 hours)

Will borrow his Spyder 3 calibration after another 2/3 weeks or so to recalibrate.

Cheers
