Hi Alan
Great review.
I too have had a chance to view the TH-P42S10K with the DMP-BD60.
But unlike you, have a chance to review the said TV with a Samsung Series 5 Full HD LCD tv.
The Samsung TV looks VERY SHARP and CRISP (Transformer 1, any desert scene) but when viewing night scenes (Underworld 1) the scenes appear VERY grainy
Switching over to the TH-P42S10K, the scene although not as sharp (Transformer), overall everything looks more natural (the night scenes in Underworld 1 and 3 is to be seen to be believe).
Now that I have pointed out the difference between LCD and Plasma, the major issue I initially had with the TH-P42S10K was banding issue.
I was watching Fantastic 4 where they were travelling to the space station before the cosmic ray storm, as the space craft approached the space station, the afterburners were different shades of white, to my horror, the gradient of whites were not smooth but different bands of white!
Was crushed, thought that I had found my dream FHD TV/Blu-Ray player
Have expressed my concern to my friend (the Pana Shop owner)
He asked me to give him a little bit of time to tweak the TV.
I did a little research online pertaining to the banding issue and it turned out the Greater the TV's capacity to contrast, the more severe the banding issue is (I cannot remember the exact contrast capability of the TV, but somewhere along the line of 1:2000000, pls correct me if I'm wrong)
I return a week later after he had used the Spyder Color Correction solution on the TV and the banding issue had greatly diminish
BD disc like BARAKA, Underworld 1 - 3, Transporter 2 - 3, Fifth Element (Remastered), Transformer and Hulk (Ang Lee), all looked great (some better then others, depending on disc)
Because I didn't have the TH-P42X10K next to it, I really didn't see a "greenish" issue (maybe the color correction solution is THAT good)
As for the Blu-Ray player, I played and original Fantastic 4 DVD compared to the Blu-Ray Fantastic 4, I cannot see much of a difference, which leads to two possible coclusion
a) The Video Upscale of the BD player is fantastic
b) Fantastic 4 DB is mediocre
(it had been suggested by a very popular BD reseller on the Low Yat forum that the later is true)
But playing BD disc (Region A and Region Free) is a breeze
My two sens worth
