It is dirt cheap.

I bought the Kia Cerato Forte ori price is $51K, then OPC minus $17K = I just need to fork out $34K.

and the monthly installment only $320, and bcos my company give me a fixed traveling allowance of $240 a month bcos I been transfered to Tuas, so I just need to pay $80 per month for the installment.

and now I can drive all day long around the islandwide during weekends and dont feel bored anymore.

If in Msia, really cant afford this as the price for this car is RM85K.

The coupe looks really good man why didnt u get it ?

yes, yes..... the company support is a must for you to lay your fingers on a car/vehicle.....that means we have to find a good enough company in singapore for us to have travelling freedom in the small island....you have secured a nice company job position as i see...

yea, getting a car is one thing, but maintaining is another story. The painful part is the ERP and Parking. Whenever u park u need to put coupon. The 50cents coupon seems very cheap but if u need to park for few hours then its gonna hurt. I wanna ask if any of u actually cheat on the coupon or not, lol

try to write your name on the coupon to prove that coupon is your possession and leave it in front of your car wind screen and wait for the traffic officer to tear the parking time off from the coupon, is it feasible in singapore???

Not that pain.

My car comes with 3 years or 100,000KM free maintenance, after 3 years I may sell or retain it.

As for ERP, I seldom pay it as I usually drive it during weekends or after 7pm during weekdays as there are fewer ERPs.

In the end, only petrol that I need to fork out.

Having said that, the cost is only slightly more for taking MRT and bus to Tuas which cost me approx $5 per day.

Unlike KL, you will kena toll 365/24/7 non-stop and still need to stuck in the jam.

Still have road tax (albeit discounted) and insurance.

Maintenance is not 100% free. Consumables (ie. wear and tear items) like tyres, brake pads, non-service fluids, off-interval lubricant changes, air cond servicing are not typically covered under the free maintenance deal.

Ya, true.. but the savings in my installment is enough for me to cover such expenses.

Overall, I still find it much more cheaper to own and drive a car in SG compare to MY.

My stumbling block to buying a car is not the cost of purchase. It is the limitation of the years of ownership ie. 10 years before you have to renew the COE... and in most cases, the COE renewal is more than the residual value.

I get a nice car allowance and 100% interest subsidy on the loan, but I still can't bring myself to buy a car. Just feels so much more 'worth it' to use the cash for savings or to buy shares.

It all depends on oneself, if you really enjoy driving or speeding on the nice roads in SG compare to driving in KL with roads full of holes, then one may pruchase a car.

If your interest is to own a dream bangalow in Msia when you retire, then one may save or invest your money rite now and purchase a dream house after you reached 55.

For me, my interest is to reach any of my destination in style compare to taking MRT or buses especially during weekends.

thanks for reply...i mean is there sufficient vacancies for environmental treatment (water, for specific) jobs in singapore as singapore is so small in landmass
and their universities are churning out much much more engineers with much higher quality......

wow, master in nus for chem eng???? then you should have no worry lah as nus holds high ranking among world universities, malaysian universities qualification cannot be compared to sg counterparts in terms of recognition...so assuming no malaysian/singaporean/foreigner people will come to snatch your position lor, unless the competitors are all phd...lol

Erm....no lor....I've applied to several companies during a career fair few months back and none of them has called me up for any interviews. On the other hand, most of the undergraduates all got interviews and offers d T.T

So....yea, hard to find job lolz.

frankly speaking. the malaysian engineers are hard to outcompete their singaporean counterparts nowadays when sg gov invested more in the environmental industries to create more opportunities for the future generations of local singaporeans???
SG is small, but it compensates with technology. There is barely a drop of oil in SG, yet they are among the top 3 oil-refining countries in the world.
Many Singaporeans are not in the engineering/science field, they prefer to be in the finance line where the pay is really good. Most engineers I've met in SG are foreigners and mostly Malaysians, so as long as you're good, you should be OK.

QUOTE
no chain of the environmental industries is being moved out of singapore due to the high singaporean labor cost meh??? environmental engineers are still demanded highly in next five to ten years in sg companies??

Added on May 4, 2010, 9:42 pm
The industries that are moving out are those that are labour-intensive i.e. Seagate and hard-disk manufacturing. Those that stay are the high-tech ones like Boeing's jet engine facility.

Env. eng. is a very important field in SG. They are trying to be self-sufficient water-wise with reservoirs and technology like Newater so they no longer need to be at the mercy of Johor. My sec. school classmate was fully sponsored to pursue his Masters and PhD in NTU and Stanford in water treatment technology.

The reason is simple: economic situation and politics. Locals are pissed that foreigners are coming in droves to work in SG; they feel squeezed out. So they are pressuring the govt to make it less desirable to hire foreigners. With a general election coming (this year or next) the govt is bowing to their demands, though it's not feasible in the long run. The hiring situation is a lot better now than last year, though.
The undergrads are most likely citizens, or PRs. Those on student pass alone are not getting hired, myself included.

Check IRAS. IIRC it's like 3-4%.
CPF only for PRs and citizens.

don't be harsh on yourself if you can afford one and your coy is helping. You buy car is for the "freedom" not just to keep the car for long.

Life can be very different when you have a car (just a normal car), luxury car will be another story.

Ah, exam week over in NUS?

In the past foreign students will almost automatically get a PR invitation letter when they're about to graduate. With this letter you get PR status immediately once you secure a job. In fact, some companies already treat you as PR and allow you to apply for PR-only jobs.

But last year (when I grad!!!) very few ppl got it, not even those 1st class honours students. I didn't get it, so naturally job-hunting has been a nightmare. I heard they've totally stopped giving out the invitation letter this year, because of political pressure. Hope you'll be more lucky than me.

We've been through this with one of the Moderators or Admin in the past. We were told that there is no real physical or technical limit to the number of pages - and the 'limit' (apparently 125 as you mention) is arbitrary.

My preference is to keep this thread. Makes the info we post easy to find, rather than being buried in old threads somewhere. And navigation is no issue, really. We just click "last page" and we're right where we need to be to see updates to this thread.

The thing is that the car allowance from my company depends on job level only. It doesn't depend on whether I actually buy a car or not. So, it's more like additional salary, rather than a car allowance - and therefore, it's a matter of convincing myself that buying a car is money well spent.

QUOTE(r1v3r)

Absolutely agree that life can be extremely different. The cheapest car for me is now 75K due to the recent COE craziness. Sigh... that's like 20 lots of SPH... each lot earning $250 dividend each year tongue.gif

I very much doubt this will be a prolonged situation, things will revert back to the old ways after the General Elections are held in Singapore next year. All these moves are done to placate the rising resentment and xenophobia that some native Singaporeans have over the massive influx of foreigners over the past 5 years (33% of residents in Singapore are foreigners or PRs).

Likewise, hordes of Malaysians and other foreigners have had their PR applications rejected by ICA unless you have a P1 employment pass (meaning your employer is paying you above SGD7,000 per month) or a PEP pass.
