I saw an ad in the papers last week i think. on SAMSUNG's new LED TV.

Anyone seen it already? Any idea how much it cost?

Found a review here:
http://www.slashgear.com/ces-2009-samsung-...led-tv-0729265/

Below is from the Star.
===============================================================================================
KUALA LUMPUR: Samsung Malaysia Electronics Sdn Bhd aims to increase its flat-panel TV market share to 35% with the launch of its new range of LED flat-panel TVs – the LED TV Series 8, Series 7 7000 and Series 6 6000.

According to managing director Yoon Ki-Heung, the company is confident of achieving the target as its range of LED TVs incorporated cutting-edge display technologies, innovative design and environmentally-friendly features.

“Consumers still want perfect picture quality and to enjoy high-quality pictures on large screen,” Yoon told reporters after launching its first full-line LED TVs yesterday.

Last year, the company had a 25% market share in the same category.

“Samsung has pioneered a new species in the TV market with our LED TVs that redefines the standards for viewing quality, home entertainment décor and energy efficiency,” Yoon said.

Since the LED TV had done well in countries like South Korea, where its demand had quadrupled when it was launched, “we are confident we can do something similar here,” he said.

Yoon said he expected the TV market to grow further this year despite the current market situation and that the immense market potential of the new category was expected to help drive towards its target of selling 26 million flat-screen TVs globally in 2009.

I saw one displayed at ikano during the HN fair. It costs a silly 80K. Didn't go check the size of the screen.

That sounds more reasonable....but still very expensive...but has anyone actually sees it in Action? How is the image quality?

I think SONY's latest motionflow TV also around that price (9k to 10k)....saw the motionflow, seems like got good and bad...watched part of "Open Seasons" on Motionflow TV, seems like really improved smoothness and frame rates, then somewhere else some concert video or something, not sure what's the source but there seems to be extra smoothness in the frame rates, but however at the same time, introduced blurriness as well...don't really like it.

You are referring to the MotionFlow TVs?

I wonder if it can create additional frame rates for video games...then you can have better frame rates in games even if your game lags?? LOL.

Seriously...who watch RTM??? LOL.

I think local models here might not have DVB-T built in, like most cases with the similar models that reach our shore. But since this is new and high-end stuff, maybe it's included.

Nah, i'm just guessing. So far, most of the LCD TV here has been cascarated with the Digital TV tuner when it reach our shores...but since this is like RM10K TV, maybe they leave it there to justify the high price.

Maybe 5 years?

Anyway, if FULLHD TV can drop to around RM1K (32"), I think LED will have a hard time penetrating the market...price factor is still the numero factor in our market.

LED TV no full hd? hmm.gif

but currently LCD TV only available for 40" onwards, so only those with budget to go for 40" will choose LED TV while 32" remains the lower range, maybe next time the LED TV will come out 32" onward then the current full HD will be kick out for sure, just like out non-flat CRT and flat CRT laugh.gif

Those dynamic contrast ratio are basically meaningless. Each manufacturer has their own standard of measurement.

Not like that bro, still need to wait. Maybe new technology after LEDTV will better or cheaper...

Plasma come out before LCDTV but LCDTV more cheaper and popular now.

I still cannot buy Plasma at current price.

No need to buy Plasma already. Plasma is now more or less tar pau-ed and closed shop. But LED is still cheaper than Plasma when it first comes out...i remember prices like RM40k and RM30k for Plasma....sweat.gif

Furthermore, plasma is not suitable for video games, which i suspect is one of the reason contributing it's demises. A lot of people buying an LCD for games and movies and even as secondary/primary display monitor for PCs.

LED backlight TVs have their advantage compared to traditional CCFL backlight LCD TVs. They will have better contrast ratio due to deeper blacks. However, there are still some disadvantages that people should be aware of. Non local dimming LED backlighting has still has problems with inability to display total black. As such, the contrast ratios are not that great. Not important when viewing in brightly lit rooms, but if you like to watch your movies in the dark, then it becomes an irritation. Another source of uncertainty, is the lifetime of the LED backlight. This needs more studies and possibly improvement. There are 2 kinds of LED backlighting. Samsung & LG uses white LEDs and Sony uses tristimulus LED (individual R,G,B). Tristimulus should give better colour accuracy all around. However, the problem is that the half life of the respective RGB LEDs are not the same currently, so something to watch out for.

Local Dimming LEDs are the next best thing. They ability to turn off areas of LED depending of the screen content is what will give plasmas a run for the money. The problem here is that there will be more pixels than LED thus causing smearing/blooming/spillover of local dimming.

I honestly believe that all LCD manufacturers know that at the moment due to the tecnology nature, plasmas give a more accurate representation of how movies are viewed and they are making strides in matching or besting plasma as we go along. The main reason why LED backlighting TVs start lower than when Plasma 1st came out is due to the overall lower cost of manufacturing panels today. Those days the plasma panel yields were extremely low. Now, panel manufacturing costs have dropped tremendously.

Actually, plasma does work for gamers well, just care needs to be taken to reduce burn in.

I really hope that Samsung, Sony and LG continue to work on improving LED backlighting since I think it is a very good improvement in LCD technology. I also hope that the other manufacturers work on the other aspects that need improvement, response time, refresh rates, viewing angle and picture reproduction to enable the movie like feel.

On another note, don't write off plasma just yet. The cost of manufacturing panels are at an all time low now. They have 2 more tricks up their sleeve, namely 5lumens and 10lumens tech. This will allow plasma to catch up on LCD in terms of ultra bright picture content and lower power consumption.

End of the day, the consumer benefits from competition.

Ok. As u know, if u get a Full HD TV, there are 1920 X 1080 pixels (these are divided into sub pixels, Red Green Blue, together they make white). Then there is the backlight. The traditional backlights are horizontally placed behind tthe panel to drive the panel. Pixels are individual pixels that are arranged around the back of the panel. See picture below.

user posted image

As you can see unless each pixel is backlit by a single LED there is no way there are equal amount of pixels to LED. I believe Sony or Samsung do not state the number of LEDs there are on the backlight. LG claims there are ~ 1500 LEDs in their LED backlighting LCDs. 1500 LEDs to light up an area that has 2 million odd pixels will have the blooming effect that I mentioned and I have seen it on the Samsung A950 series. I have attached link to Cnet's blog explaining this. Oh BTW, I made a mistake with the name of the 3 LED method that Sony uses, it is Triluminous and not Tristimulous. Nice read, check out if interested.

I have been looking at the 55A950 and have read some good reviews - other than blooming & bad off-center viewing. But I saw it the other day at Best Denki, 1U and was disappointed ... it was displaying high motion Samsung High Def files, but it was very 'grainy' and not sharp at all. The 46A950 did not look so bad.
Wondering if it could have been due to poor calibration e.g. Auto Motion Plus was turned off smile.gif ?

Also, i noticed that the A950 series is selling more expensive (in US) than the B7000 series (comparing 55" to 55"). But over here, i think the B7000 is more expensive. Anyone can help verify?

A950 shld be cheaper here.B7000 is new & shld retail for $10,900 after discount.B8000 already making it's way next mth.crazy influx of tv's this yr i predict

Sometimes watching in malls cannot justify the PQ of LCD TV's cos settings all not put into consideration. So cannot pass judgement that way..

Very possible, A950 series is local dimming, the new B7000 is not.

I have seen the 55A950 in action and have calibrated it. Looks pretty good to me if u can live with the blooming and the off centre issue.

From the CNET side, for Sony LED backlit, even thought they use RGB LEDs which are muc better than single(white) LED but the amount of LEDs used as seen from the photo are not that many therefore would not be able to perform good local dimming as well.
I have open up Samsung LED backlit LCD, the amount are quite a lot, but not sure got over 1500 LEDs used or not tongue.gif. but i believe they can perform much better local dimming than Sony. But until i get my hand on Sony LED back lit LCD, i cannot really confirm the amount of LEDs used as compared with Samsung. As of now, i don't think i will pay the overly priced Sony LED backlit LCD.
I too have check the blooming effect on Sumsung, my personal view not that visible and when compared to CCFL backlit LCD side by side. CCFL LCD no fight at all. tongue.gif
The life span of LEDs are much longer than CCFL and the production cost for LED back lit LCD is much cheaper than CCFL LCD. however they are sellling it at much higher price now as the performnce is way much better than CCFL, but i believe the price will drop drastically once all LCD maker switch to LED back lit. Therefore for plasma camp side, they are going to have their hand full if they want of resurrect plasma TV.

Cool! You actually pulled the panel apart! Kudos. LED backlight LCDs are a very important step for LCD technology. My only concerns would be the lifetime of the 3 different LEDs compared to each other. The uniformity of the backlight (since it is more individual) is also one of my concerns. The blooming becomes apparent when u pull up test patterns, hence that's why I saw it clearly. The uniformity issues were also seen on the A950 that I calibrated, but still, its performance was much better than any CCFL backlit LCD that I saw. I also noticed that the blooming was not so apparent on the Sony X450.

The actual 0 IRE calibration on the Samsung A950 was 0 (or my probe returned a zero because it was that low!). My probe is not capable of measuring that low. In fact, not many probes can measure that low. So I would put it at 0.001 ft/L. On content however (mixed content), it goes up to 0.1 ft/L or more. I am quoting this from memory since I do not have the numbers with me. If you went farther away from the mixed content the black levels dropped again to below measureable limits. I think they need to further improve the SMART LED algorthims. This is where the technology needs improvement compared to plasmas.

I believe this is the 1st serious step that the LCD camp has taken to improve picture quality and viewing capability to match or best plasma. Time will tell. I hope they continue competing until the the display technology is fully matured. The last thing we would want is that plasma dies before LCD technology is superior!

PS, that picture that was on the CNET site was not a Sony backlight picture.

theorically the LED TV will last longer and brighter than LCD TV, CCFL doesn't last as long as LED, that's confirmed, unless the LED is a faulty unit....

but the problem is, is some of the LED is bad or faulty unit, then will we see a tiny spot become dimmer, if got too much LCD rosak then it will disturb the viewing pleasure smile.gif

Then go for 5 years warranty at least. You pay more but you will have peace in mind. Or buy all-risk insurance for the TV. Even after warranty period over, if the TV cannot be repair, you still can claim the insurance and get back at least the current price that time (for newer model price), or opt to get a replacements.

I also happened to see the Samsung Series 7, 8 and 9 on display yesterday. There were several clips being played (maybe from some demo disc); I agree with you on the very grainy picture, but I didn't notice any motion judder.

Plasma techology is so much better than LCD, that is why LCD has gone through a lot of improvements to overcome its weakness, 50HZ...100HZ...and now 200HZ then its the response time reduction..now its the back lighting to LED type...go for plasma..

no.

it's best to get 650, A or B.
if wanna spend less, get at least 550, A or B.

The LED TVs u see now is properly called "LED-backlit LCD TV". wink.gif

no sh!t, not worth the price. get a plasma and be happy with every PQ.
LCD changes so much just to match the PQ of plasma. plasma is mature tech, it won't change much in the future. so u are buying something worth.

40c6900 is last year model/2010, tats why it is so cheap now....

actually both 40d5000 and 40d5500 specs are the same, oni difference between 40d5500 and 40d5000 is 40d5500 is smart tv while 40d5000 is normal led tv...

40c6900 i believe is 3d led tv if i'm not wrong... sweat.gif

bought my Samsung 40" LED TV UA40D5003BR and Samsung BluRay player BD-D5100 at all-in RM2,350 from a small electrical shop in Seksyen 18 Shah Alam last nite. To me, damn cheap.

The TV is a new model but you cant find that in Malaysia's Samsung website. It looks like the model is not meant for our market coz most references in the web are coming from the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Thailand, Indonesia & all that kind of countries. Wonder why.

Haven't tried fully exploring the features. I don't have Beyond nor any Bluray disc to start with, except composite cable. For now, normal astro output looks very inferior than my Sony 29" CRT. Stretched images in 16:9 screen are something i need to acquire from now. DVD 9 doesn't offer better images than my CRT. TV speaker is horrendous - external speakers are so mandatory. And have yet to experience its 120hz Clear Motion Rate. Does it really have that?

But above all and which I like most, it stands elegantly on my living hall's TV bench. At that price and look so premium, it is worth to be seen, if not to be watched. hahaha.

TV alone is RM1,980. I paid via amex, so price includes the merchant charges la
For hdmi, only 1 port. If use beyond and hdmi dvd player, then we need to pull and plug.
but there are hdmi splitters sold out there. Aren't they?

I guess 100Hz here is not referring to power capacity in our national grid. It refers to frame rates whereby the higher the Hz, the more 'real' movement of an object on the screen is. That is one major reason I buy the LCD LED TV because I have been admiring the naturalness of moving images displayed by LCDs in stores.

i noticed that the more expensive LCD or LCD LED on a given particular size tend to have many ports in their rear panel. But more often than not, we are not going to use all of them in one go, are we? Even then, we do not usually switch from, say, beyond to dvd/bluray, too often.

Are we wiling to pay dearly for the convenience of not having to physically switch from one device to another?

My cheap 40" LED & Full HD Samsung has 1 hdmi port only. To interchange beyond and blu-ray, I just need an hdmi switch (say 3 in 1 out switch) (or remote-controlled one) which cost less than RM100. Or I can just rely on composite/component ports for less used device. jimat.

Most LED TV in the market now is backlighting. Real LED TV only for high end models and is hard to find and bloody expensive too i guess.

rm6800 for this spec is pretty good deal, where did you get that from?
i am also like you, tempted to buy an LG 3D as well. i'd tried viewing through 3d glasses on both the samsung and lg, and i think there is less flicker, and i don't get dizzy watching 3d on the lg. well that explains the higher price for lg. let us know what you decide, and why

Did your friend buy TV only for 4494?
The price I get from SenHeng for 40D6600 + BD-D5500 (PWP) is 4699 (after cash rebate + member's rebate)
FOC 3D Bluray Kit (2 3D glasses + Shrek BDs) + minor gifts (umbrellas etc.)
2+1 yrs (LED TV) & 1+1 yrs (BD Player) Warranty
TV alone would be around 3.8k (Didn't pay attention 'cause I'd decided on PWP BD player)

Those who're considering buying any model should really go to all the shops you could think of, even different shops of the same chain, 'cause what they're offerring could be different.
I went to 2 SenQs and their offers for the same model differ in both package type (one shop listed the BD player as a gift while the other offered RM800 cash rebate and PWP price for the BD player) and the difference of the grand total amount was RM100 (after rebate).

It's supposed to mean that they'll give you a voucher for your next purchase but the shops I visited actually let the customer use the voucher on the same/current purchase.
You could ask them directly and see how they're doing this.

Do you need 3D and Samsung Smart TV features?
Below are some of the things I learned from reading/asking:
All series 6 and 7 LED TVs comes with 3D features and are Smart TV, except that D6000 doesn't come with 2D-to-3D converter.
All series 5 are non 3D-capable and I think only some models come with Smart TV features.
Series 7 comes with 600Hz CMR, 400Hz(D6400/6600) and 200Hz(D6000) for series 6 and 100Hz CMR for series 5.
I don't know much about the prices for 46incher cause for me that size is totally out of the question but I think D6400 is being offered at RM6499(from the usual RM6998/6999) for the current sales.
Maybe SenHeng/SenQ are offering more rebate on top of that discounted price? Since they are offering RM800 rebate for their 40D6600 (As far as I can tell, they carry D6600 instead of D6400) for the Raya/Merdeka sales.

Overall I think the best you can get under 6k for a 46incher is either D6400 or D6600, but only if the cash rebate I mentioned applied and only while the sales lasted.

Oh, the main differences of D6400 and D6600 are:
D6600 comes with wifi built-in while D6400 does not (but wifi adaptors would be given FOC during sales).
You can download and install the Skype and Web browser apps on D6600 but not on D6400 (read a post by an actual D6400 owner that you could install them but they'll get blocked and deleted from your TV soon enough).

If I am wrong about any of the above, all the sifus please fell free to correct. laugh.gif

You're most welcome. tongue.gif
If I remembered correctly, 40D5500 is being offered at RM2999 during the sales (more rebate may apply on top of that) and wireless adapter is being retailed at RM299 (PWP may apply).
But nevermind those anymore.
You've bought it, right?
So just focus on enjoying the new TV. rclxms.gif

I did survey before and found that small shops do sell cheaper but there is a catch though. The set has only the 2 yrs manufacturer warranty.
These days most electronics/electrical stuff not built to last, so have a longer period warranty is better. And Senheng & Harvey Norman does provided addition period up to 5 yrs. From my past experience with CCFL lited LCD, they tend to give trouble in yr4 onwards, which fortunately I did pay for the additional period, saving me much money on several instance.
So for LED lited which is still new & I'm not sure how's the durability and thus paying additional RM300, I hope I can sleep better. laugh.gif

I connected a 1.5TB and it plays ok, I think 2TB should be fine too. The more important thing to take note might be what format it can play.
I was told that it plays everything but rm, rmvb, mov, flac and ape.

The wifi dongle official retail price is RM299.

Anyway, I have a question of my own that I hope someone could help me with:
When I watch the local tv stations, the sounds are less than satisfactory but it could be fixed by changing the sound from Nicam Stereo to Mono. unfortunately for me, this change would be reverted after several minutes. Why is it so?
All that I could get from the e-manual is from the page: e-manual> basic features> selecting the sound mode.
It does state that I could manual set the sound to mono, but it states nothing on the setting being reverted by itself.

i got the tv too......u have to use hdmi and av if u want to connect more than 1 video input (i use av for astro since it's standard astro and hdmi for dvd player)......the bad news is there is no audio out in this tv, so there is no way to connect speaker or headphone directly to the tv!
but u can the speaker to astro or dvd player directly if that's the sound source........

i got the tv too......u have to use hdmi and av if u want to connect more than 1 video input (i use av for astro since it's standard astro and hdmi for dvd player)......the bad news is there is no audio out in this tv, so there is no way to connect speaker or headphone directly to the tv!
but u can the speaker to astro or dvd player directly if that's the sound source........

The spec sheet says there is a headphone.

I've asked 5 shops and none of them selling the Samsung 32" FHD LED UA32D5000. Mostly manufacturers produce 32" using HD ready screen only.

Normally, you go to Best Denki, Harvey Norman etc to survey the prices. What's their offer and so on. Then you hop on to let's say a chinaman shop, Legend SS2 to check out. A series 6 (40inch) 6400 model in Harvey Norman costs about RM4K, Legend (RM3.5K). But i think is without the 3d glasses. So yeah, it depends how you struck your deal with the shop. But better cash + carry (credit card charge 2-3%)

Every now and then Samsung will do promo during the weekend. Head to the nearest electronic shop outlets to find out. Harvey Norman/OnKing/SenHeng might offer something more than the typical chinaman shop.

Managed to get a 40D6400 + 2 x 3D glasses + wifi dongle + 3 years warranty for 4.2k. What do you think of the price? Kuching here didn't have the D6600, and I reckon the build in web browser isn't great after reading reviews.

Hello Samsung LED TV owners!

A question; does the UA46D5000 be able to plug in regular Astro, meaning the red, white and yellow cables?

have u plug in the anolog cable, means ( yellow-video, white n red for audio).

since you have bought ur new tv ( led or lcd ), therefore upgrade your astro decoder to beyond, the connection u change to HDMI, cos HDMI combining the audio and video data transfer.

btw, your r really submitted the wrong place, u should go here tongue.gif smile.gif :

5003 is more like the downgrade version of 5000? If not mistaken, the usb function can only play pictures/music. Why wanna get this model where you can get 5000 at rm2000-rm2200. Considered quite cheap already if you're on limited budget.

Just see your post.. Actually, our TV model can play a lot of file format.. (extension .wmv, .rmvb, .flv and so on..) The only thing that I notice is that the codec used to make the file is not supported.. certain .mkv file (usually the small size) use codec that not recognize by the TV although its show AVC codec..

Usually, I play the file using MPC.. see the info, to know the codec details...
WMV file it only support WMV3 codec,
sometimes MKV file don't have full AVC codec or H264..

What I do is I convert the file with supported codec like H264 or AVC into new MKV/WMV/FLV/MP4

p/s: File flv or mp4 from Youtube can be play by the TV.
