Guess what car NOT to buy in the future. Air bag deployed prematurely due to clock spring (the wiring in behind the steering wheel) wires delaminated from tape. Really cheapo looking contraption the clock spring. Caused short and air bag deployed. Good thing car was in parking lot when it happened.

The car can't be re-started. Had to get electrical wiring man to start, drove to mech and replaced the clock spring and steering wheel over WITHOUT airbag...... paranoid that it can happen again.

At least know that safety-safety critical component works.... but not at right time. :-(

Can't claim a single cent from Proton, passed warrantee period.

SRS=supplementary/secondary restrain system, not a company name.

hmm i think if the airbag deployed then u sure have a bad luck. If im not mistaken, the airbag unit is supplied from autoliv-hirotako. a joint venture between a sweedish company and malaysian company They do supply airbag to other car manufacturer as well so its just bad luck that you got the defected one.

hmm you can clearly see in the 1st picture of the steering wheel there is a sticker with "AUTOLIV" written on it.

Well, what u should do is to call Proton i-Care straight away~
Then at least Proton ppl come over and if proven is their fault, then should be able to get compensation..
I heard airbags need to be checked after a period of time, what's your car age??

how old is ur car?

beige interior hi-line at least 4-5 years...

did u get ur air bag system checked every year? u should do so and follow the proper guidelines before making decision to put the blame on proton...

even after warranty period u could still charge proton n get a new module if the airbag suddenly deploys provided ur service booklet is on time and follow all specs...

haha but i bet most ppl send outside immediately after warranty perios right tongue.gif

er.. well... he said is the installation problem...
the wire short together... and they used cheap loytape to tape the connection already...
so old already it shorted and boom... the air bag bounce out... sad.gif
not related to the manufacturing... but installation or workmanship problem...

The car is 4 years old. The air bag deployed because of the 'clock spring' wiring shorted. The clock spring is located behind the steering wheel, behind the steering column. It contains the wiring for the horn, airbag, radio controls, etc. Suspect nothing wrong with airbag but main due to wiring.

Proton gave the standard answer 'Car out of warranty period'. So went to Proton parts center in Shah Alam and bought the horn cover (with horn) and clock spring (no more air bag for me). The air bag module cost Rm998.

The clock spring module is also known as mosquito coil (mun heong) by mechs. Cannot open because it's spring loaded, so I don't know how Proton can check if there is going to be a problem even if it's checked every day.

This can happen to ANYONE with air bag installed in your best car in the world..... sad.gif

Just be careful.

First sign is your radio and electrical system go cuckoo.... within a short period of time, before you figure what happened the air bag will deploy prematurely........... imagine you are driving 110 km/h on highway.... dangerous le.....

Yes, you're right, the service life of an Airbag is usually 10 years, after that, the manufacturer will require the owner to change to a new Airbag unit...

some fault on your airbag system. it may or not deploy the airbag during collision. or maybe premature deployment.

See I always have this fear that things like that will happen to airbags equipped cars.. hahaha. Not just proton, but any car.

And the thing about Malaysians is.. If any part in Proton goes wrong, confirm proton is in the wrong. But if your merc's airbag malfunction or the door handle come off. its not merc's problem whistling.gif

This problem happened to me just now. But the airbag didn't deploy. Proton Gen2 2005. I saw the airbag light on and a few minutes later my car wiring system gone haywire. The horn went crazy. Everytime I wanted to turn on the engine, the car kept horning. Of course the car won't start. So now my car is stalled. So advice is to call a wireman is it? Other advice also appreciated. Thanks.

Nope...standard. The alarm has no problem. I can lock and unlock the car using the remote. The horn is the prob but I did install a fuel cutter device. I suspect faulty wiring.

its probably because its CKD...being assemble by malaysian jaguh kampung monkey hand so cannot count...can happen to shitty CKD toyota and honda as well...

on german/japan made merc/bmw...this hardly happens...of cause I'm not saying merc and bmw are reliable shit...they break down a lot too cause too many shitty unreliable electronics...thankfully merc has woken up and finally address many of their shithole electronic malfunction issue...my point is...they workmanship and quality is up to minimum standard...

I dont think so as accidents happens. Just like in production, the production number will never reach perfect due to bound of defects in a few regardless it is in Malaysia or overseas. My friend who drives a 206CC in uk got his airbag prematured deployed too, guess luck was not on his side though. As far as i see, there is no issue on the airbag thingie, if there is i am sure the forums will be flooded with topics where each Proton user posting that their airbag popped out and cursing P1. Moreover the airbags and wiring modules all were not made by Proton but was supplied by Autoliv AB from Sweden if i am not mistaken.

Since passed warranty, just rip out the air bag and replace the cover w/o the air bag.

I myself also scared of premature deployment each time I drive. Maybe can cause an accident.

Added on October 16, 2009, 12:12 pmBTW, I wonder if I can have both of my SE's airbags removed permanently? Anyone tried that before?

Scared of driving with that thing on. Like driving with a bomb that can go off anytime.

dont remove the airbag unnecessary, you've paid for it therefore let it be there.
as for gen2 , u can know the problem of it when you turn the steering wheel, the honk will automatically comes in , cruise control malfunction. and the earliest stage is the radio control buttons on the steering gone haywire .

Same here, experienced the same shit last year, but luckily the airbag didn't deploy, it just killed my car. And the same crap is happening again now, the symptoms of a damaged clock spring, already made appointment to get it fixed first thing tomorrow morning. Cant be driving with a ticking time bomb.

Dude's my car also had this problem about 2 years ago. Same thing happened to my friends Gen2 as well.

I just called up Proton iCare and based on their system, I still need to go back and replace the clock-spring, i.e. meaning that they sold me a defective product 2 years ago when I replaced it...now the question would be whether we can claim back the RM300 or RM400 we paid previously - I still have my payment receipt!

Why did it took so long for Proton to realise the defective steering wheel?

Bcos all Proton's staff are driving non Proton cars.

Imagine the airbag suddenly punch you in face while driving

it might just a show only for the proton to do the recall. Coz the big brands are all doing recall around the world so they must do "something" to prove the existence of this lousy brand...

Yes, you're right, the service life of an Airbag is usually 10 years, after that, the manufacturer will require the owner to change to a new Airbag unit...
