Well mate
First u must know that taking a penalty by Gerrard is completely different from taking it by Gattuso for example the more the player is perfect at penalties the more u can take it the best way. Then u should know that using d-pad in penalties is better than using analog stick, sometime u can't control direction by analog stick.
So take it right...
1st u should press shooting button .. the more u hold it the more the ball get higher which means that when u just touch the button the ball will hit the net in the bottom .. If u holds it a little the ball will be higher. After pressing the shooting button and when the player start to run towards the ball you should immediately hold the direction , and It's same as the 1st step the more you hold the direction the more it will be away from the center of the net which mean if you just touched the right d-pad direction the ball will hit the nets from the center., and when you hold it a little it will move a little towards right and if you hold it too much the ball will go way wide from the nets so you should use your sense to hold direction it. And as I told you the more the player is perfect in taking penalties the more you can control the shot in the best way. And this for the shootouts, but for penalties during the match you can use the up and down directions instead of left and right (i.e.: when you take the penalty at the goal in the right of you screen the up direction will represent the left and down direction will represent the right one ... and vice versa on the goal in the left of your screen)
You should try it more to learn how to control it.
Good luck

I think this changes is good, especially when you are playing with a friend in the same room you're usually both sat close in front of the TV, so the guy who is on the keeper side always has a chance before, of seeing where you're pressing on the controller because of the old system ( unless you hide the controller up your top

)
But now because the striker HAS to choose the direction at the last second, the keeper has to decide at the last second also, making it virtually impossible for the guy sitting next to you to sneakily get a look at which way you're shooting
