Personally, I prefer playing rock genre music. But my friend told me that if I was to start learning, better start with acoustic 1st because the string is easier to play with. Anyway, I was going to get myself an electric guitars. Anyone have recommendations of electric guitars for newbie ? Which brand/ type to choose ? My budget is around RM800. ( If possible, including amps ) - see page 2.

1st off, your friend knows nuts!

electric is a lot easier to play than acoustic because of the lower action. however, acoustic helps you play more cleanly. so pick your target, easy and sloppy or hard and precise.

there's to many thread regarding newbies electric guitars, just browse through.

No point learning on acoustic first if you prefer songs that use the electric. Go for electric guitar. No question about it.

If you're thinking you have to learn on acoustic before you can deserve an electric, think again. My friends are all to familiar with the acoustic, they suck on the electric. All that time spent playing on the acoustic could've been used to familiarize yourself with the electric, if you prefer playing power chords and nail crazy solos.

yes, i bet your friends that started out with acoustic can play cleaner than you(if they can't, then it's their fault).
playing slow & clean>>>>>playing fast but sloppily.

your argument is like saying, "we should start learning to drive with auto-transmission, it's much easier than manual". yes, it's been proven pointless many times over.

Um, no they can't. You were saying?

And no, that's not what my argument is saying. That's what you assume it is saying, but it is not. Who in their right mind would think that anyway? Did I even mention the word "easier"? And I don't get why suddenly it's compared with car transmission, but if you insist, it should be "if we're going to drive auto anyways and won't be using manual, we should start learning to drive with auto". Your analogy is way off. hmm.gif

Yeap, I'll be doing some research before buying. Researching now smile.gif
Anyone got suggestion ? Electric guitar pack for newbie >.<

Researching about amps now. Fender Pro Junior is the best ? Need sometime to have a check.

How about Ibanez Jumpstart package ? Around RM850. Should be able to get some discount or freebies:D

as i said it's their fault.

but, then you can't get a licensed without knowing how to drive manually, can you? i believe my analogy is somewhat valid(it's an analogy, it doesn't have to be dead accurate).

i never said "'starting on acoustic guitar' would make u play cleaner".

i said "starting from acoustic makes you "learn" how to play cleaner". i've seen to many guitarist playing power chord that cannot even play a full chord properly. even papa hetfield admit that he was having trouble to play an acoustic cleanly when recording fade to black.

with ur budget dont limit yourself to some "newbie" or "jumpstart" Package.

There are a lot of alternatives that u can mix and match to get your money's worth.

Pay a visit to Woh Fatt, CK Music, Bentley - Mutiara Damansara then u can see a huge varietis to pick from.

i strongly suggest you try checking out SX guitar/ yamaha pacifica guitar, and yes try seek for a secondhand guitar at the garage place too!
and for the amp, try search for microcube. its among the best amp for starters ^^

if u check the garage sales carefully, burgercis are selling the microcube amp for RM330, so u would have another 470 for the guitar. try squeeze a little bit more on the guitar.

acoustic or electric? treat both differently. for example,

F1 racing is not the same as rally
mountain bike is not the same as bmx

well, at least thats the way i look at it

i think..... its bout the song u want to play..... usually people go for acoustic(low end) bcoz its cheap, compare to electric(low end), plus u have to buy extra stuff for e.guitar, the cable/amp... i have an acoustic guitar, but i want to learn play jrock, so i hardly use my guitar, but my bass...

Ok, chiming in with my 2 Cents........

I started off with an acoustic, and it really helped my finger dexterity. Yes, I also agree that you "learn" how to play cleaner, as you really need to focus on what strings and how hard you hit them. But if you're sloppy on the acoustic then you just carry over the same traits over to the electric. It's easier to "hide" your mistakes on the electric, because of the thinner strings, lower actions and a mountain of distortion to go over it, plus you don't have to fret so hard because it's amplified.

On the other hand, things like scales and solos are definitely easier to learn on the electric and you'll just frustrate yourself with them on an acoustic. I'm not saying you CAN'T solo, quite the opposite (Paco De Lucia? Al DiMeola? McLaughlin?)...... but you'll need much more practice and longer to develop those kinds of skills.

So back to the task at hand, congrats on deciding to pick up an Electric...... I would suggest checking out the Yamaha Pacifica and their starter sets as they make some really nice guitars. If you want to buy them separately, you can always get the yamaha pacifica (Maybe around the RM450 price mark) and then our favorite little practice amp, the Roland Microcube (Around RM350). The rest of the left over cash you can get cables, a tuner, a strap, a few picks (you'll ALWAYS lose them) and a spare set of strings.

We used to recommend the SX guitars, but these days, it's more of a lucky draw on getting a good guitar..... some I've tried lately are just horrendous. Yamaha at least is quite standard.

You can get the Yamaha at beatspot and the Roland microcube at Bentley, or just give our forumer DeadEye a PM and see if he can get you a good deal on those.

Good luck, and Rock on!

OK biggrin.gif Thank you blacktrix. I saw a music store near my house selling the SX guitar pack for RM650. But I've been doing research & found out that the amplifier in the package wasnt good/decent enough. The guitar is in the low end range.

Yahama Pacifica is one of the best e.guitar for beginners.

Added on April 7, 2009, 12:11 pmHow about Stagg Strat Type electric guitar ?

squire owned by fender, their lowest standard of guitar in line.
but i wouldt say it really that bad.
for it's price i would say it's actually ok.
but u need to know which model to go for.

california squire goes for 650++ but I dont know if i would reccommend it.
maybe standard series squire that goes 800 -> 1100 would be ok.

or maybe an Ibanez Gio?

actually Pacifica is not bad also.
then there is also SX and Samick guitar.

i still remember first time i changed to electric years ago, it was a crappy 2nd handed guitar.
i didnt even have an amplifier, plug it in to VCD player mic input and goes to the TV's speaker.
foolish or not? hahahahaaa..

but i always think that guitarist should go stage by stage with their level also.
that's the way guitarist can appreciate the value of their instrument and equipment from time to time.

With your budget, here's what I can recommend you:

Punk rock: Squier or SX brand.

Metal: Gio Ibanez, SX or Yamaha Pacifica

Indie: Squier or SX

If you can raise your budget a little bit, I would recommend you to get an Epiphone SG 310. It's around 1000-1300 but its pretty versatile when it comes to sound and style. Looks great for playing rock music.

It's highly advisable for you to get a decent guitar that can last you for a long time. If you're just curious about guitars and want to learn how to play, a Squier Telecaster Standard California series would be your best bet. That, or a SX Les Paul.

I think 800 is already the limit, so let's not confuse the poor fellow with suggestions of guitars that are priced higher then that. For a student, it's incredibly hard to even come out with RM100 extra..... let alone 500 bucks......

Yes, The Pacifica is really versatile because of the added humbucker....... In fact, one of our earliest members, led_zep_freak "cut his teeth" with a pacifica before stepping up to a Fender.... and that lasted him a long time.....

So yes, the Pacifica will last you for a bit.

But like I said, find out how much some of the new GRGs cost too..... Or just try them out for yourself at Bentley and see what you like......

Since you have 2.5k, you can always go for an LTD EC-50 Les Paul shape guitar at Guitar Collection in SS15 or Sunway Pyramid. The black matte finish model looks great for playing J-rock and it sounds great too for the price of RM1200. And I think you can even get a discount. It'll definitely last you for quite a while.

You can check their website here: www.guitarcollection.com.my

Hmmmmmm..... If that's the case, I highly suggest an Ibanez RG320 or similar guitar. Also, you might want to consider bumping up to a better amplifier since the microcube as good as it is, might not last you forever.
Right now, the Vox Valavetronix series are HIGHLY recommended and the AD15 or the bigger AD30 would be a good fit. Costs around the RM550-700 prince range.

If you still decide to stick with the same Yamaha/Microcube, maybe you can invest in a Multi-FX pedal instead? Something like the Zoom 2.1u would be a great place to start as it has an expression pedal and you get to play with Wah effects.

+1

Now with bigger budget, a better guitar will do you good. Ibanez RG321 is one of the example, as it's under RM 1.5k. You can even save more if you get them second hand, but yeah, I believe you want a new unit because of warranty. nod.gif

Also about Zoom 2.1u, it came with USB connection, so you further mess around with them using PC. Not to forget, dirt cheap. laugh.gif

2.5k thats a big budget.. hehehe u can have lots of choice for that budget...

anyway.. best thing is u go to guitar shops bring some pro wif u.. and try out the guitar there... since u still new and u need the motivation to play.. so get a guitar that really look good to you (ofcourse within ur budget) so when u bring it back u will be more interested to play it day by day.. dont just get something that might be good for other but not ur self that can cause lost of interest and end up selling those guitar..

maaaan 2.5k is alotta money.. if i were in your position i'd go for a MIM Fender Strat (although i dont know how suitable that is for JRock) and any old amp. because you wouldn't need to use your amp much if u perform regularly. and since ur beginning, i dont think you'll need many effects to play with. IMO, you should start of with a great guitar, as you're most probably gonna use it for a long time, and then only move on to better amps, effects, etc..

Rikipu, completely disagree with you there mate.

An amplifier is one of the cornerstones of your tone. We always have this equation: Sucky Amp + Amazing guitar = Sucky tone
Average Amp + Average guitar = Decent tone
Amazing Amp + Sucky Guitar = Bearable tone.

It's not whether he performs regularly or not.... the feel of playing through an amplifier and playing through headphones are two completely different feels and methods of playing.

But yes, with that budget, a guitar like the lower midrange Ibanez RG and maybe a Vox AD30, throw in a Wah pedal and you're good to go.

hmm, never seen it that way, but now come to think of it, you're RIGHT! sucky amps bring everyone down. thats why my line 6 amp's clean sound is all echo-y and loose, well, personal preference plays a role there too i suppose.

but anyway xMika, with that sort of budget, dont just look into the yamaha pacificas and a microcube, there are lots, and i mean LOTS more stuff you can take into consideration.

sucky amp is one thing la.
but i still say buy the best guitar u can afford, of cos with allowance for a decent amp.
afterall, u are going to play it right and not just strum and go wah nice sound?

of cos saying that, blacktrix missed out one.
amazing guitar + average amp = pretty decent tone tongue.gif

Yup. Totally forgot about that one Ever!
Get a decent guitar that can last you a long time (I'm STILL using my Epiphone LP100..... after lots of modifications of course tongue.gif) and an amp that suits your tone. Then whatever you have left, maybe can invest in a multi-fx unit with an expression pedal....

I'm just a beginner =.= i can only spent more or less RM800 on the whole set. A beginner guitar like SX or Pacifica will suit me more. A decent amp like Roland microtube will do. When i'm good at it, I will consider buying another new guitar. But for now, a low budjet is better. Thanks for all the suggestion biggrin.gif My 2.5k not all on guitar lol.

I prefer to play rock music. Any other good suggestion of electric guitars around my budjet which is RM800 ? If there's a good quality starter pack, it will be better.

To me personally.
If 800, get the Yamaha Pacifica + Roland Microcube
if 2500, get the Ibanez RG + Vox 30AD.

I just went to the yamaha shop just now. The sales executive give me 15% discount, which is RM580 for the pacifica 012. Original selling price is RM690. Now I'm finding for a secondhand microcube. Anyone here selling ? Not necessary to be roland microcube. A decent practice amp will do.

Added on April 8, 2009, 7:08 pmHi Kelvw,
where you buy the Vox AC4TV ? how much is it ?

I think buy from DeadEye is better because its in package. The Microcube was RM395 from what he quoted me. The guitar is RM 610. Cables all included with those picks. If I buy from Yamaha, the guitar is RM580 alone. Is the cable included if I buy from Yamaha ?

Added on April 9, 2009, 12:28 amOr I get the guitar from Yamaha for 580 + microcube from burgercis 380.
Save rm40 smile.gif Can buy other stuff with the money.

rm380 for the microcube is about whats selling outside.
even bentley can sell at that price.

the yamaha at rm580 is ok also.
as for cables + picks that come with it, those can throw away.
better u use the money u save get better quality ones.

Ok. Thank you guys for all the helps so far. Will be going to guitar stores tmr @ 2pm with my friend to try out all the guitars, amps before making final decision. smile.gif !

Any tips on choosing guitars ? The humbuckers & single coils. I prefer playing rock music. This is the specs

Pac012 - Single Coil (Korean) x 2 , Humbucking (Korean) x 1

Btw, hows the performance of Laney LX12 ? I can get for RM 260. But got no effect .. distortion is needed sometimes right ?

Added on April 9, 2009, 5:11 pmHi guys, I decided not to get the pacifica012 & microcube already. Just bought a Warnell Strat + Beta Aivin amp. My friend tried it out & its quite ok for entry level biggrin.gif RM650 whole set. cheers biggrin.gif

If u are into metal than buy an Ibanez or BC Rich or Schecter....but LPs are good for anything......also PRS....heck, nowadays any guitar is good enough for any music genres.....example, Slipknott....one of the guitarist uses a Telecaster(correct me if i'm wrong)....but of course modded with a different pickups rather than the standard Tele pickup......Iron Maiden's guitarist uses a Fender....so,its totally up to u....just as long it suits ur feel and style of play....like for me,i cant use a Jackson, BC Rich Mockingbird and Warlock, any V style guitars and Fenders......wat suits me the most is an LP shape guitar (Gibson,Epi,PRS...etc) and certain Ibanez guitars.....

hey guys. i wanna get a cheap e.guitar to learn playing. but i dont wanna spend too much on a guitar since its gonna be my first. so for a budget of around ~rm400 for a guitar, is it better to get a brandnew low-end stagg, or a used SX, squire, dean etc? how do i check if a used unit is still in good condition?

should i buy amp seperately or is it good to get the all-in-1 starter pack? cheapest ones i've seen is behringer and stagg for rm550. heard there are also SX and samick sets for slightly more?

1 other thing, how to play an electric guitar with headphones? just plug headphones into the input jack on the guitar? what else is needed?

btw, if i plan to play blues/jazz with the guitar, is it better to have a humbucker or all single coils? and what type of guitar suits this genre?

you need an amp. plug ur headphones into your amp.

e guitar > amp > headphone

blues better use single coil pickups

Where can direct plug in headphone to your guitar ? No electric current la dai lou ...

For jazz/blue use single coils cause the sound is much clearer compared to humbuckers which provides a darker sound ..

Guys, I'm using a strat copy .. sounds good for rock ^^ I'm playing classic rock ..

I'm looking for REALLY CHEAP guitars with budget of RM200-300. Are Starsun or Santa Cruz acceptable? I will use it as a beginner guitar and will mod it later when I have more money.....
Any one roughly knows the prices of these guitars?

blues + jazz + beginner = sx telecaster copy

if u state your budget then maybe we can help out

u can't just directly plug it in. u need an amp.
or at least a pc with soundcard that has mic input. then use a converter (1/4" to 1/8" stereo jack).
if u are not planning to do jams, i suggest u just stick the guitar into the pc. go buy that sx.

how much is the SX telecaster copy? initially i was thinking of spending the most about rm600 for guitar + amp. so my choices were down to the behringer and stagg starter packs. are they any good? but i heard the amps in these packs are not good, so it would be wasteful to spend on it.. i dont mind getting a guitar separately first since you say i can play it on my pc. but can the speakers handle it? dont want my altecs to blow.
what guitar can i get for around rm400?

When I started I plug my guitar into the pc as well, using software modellers for effects. Wont blow the speakers that way, at least not to the good altecs.

i would have to agree zintanthrax here but since u are new to electric guitar.. u probably cant see or hear the difference between the guitar..

u can get a cheap guitar but in time.. u will feel unsatisfied with the guitar u have as u get to know more about electric guitars, and u will feel the need to change to a better and more expensive guitar..

I'm on my way to get a 2nd hand decent looking S-S electric guitar for <RM300.

Got an Epiphone edi, but the Emily edition is too fancy lol.

Prefer something more neutral.

hope this is the correct thread to ask,i've read through the whole thread but still a bit blur here

so im also one of those blinded by the "learn acoustic 1st then electric" myth before i came across this thread.i'm interested in electric myself, never really fancied acoustics

so let's say i have a budget of around rm700+/-...what would be the best electric guitar set to start with?

im interested with mainstream rock genres like those from tokio hotel, boys like girls, linkin park etc

If you start with acoustic (e.g. Kapok which you can get for <RM100), you can familiarize yourself with chord fingering, switching, other techniques such as pull offs push ons slides etc. Also, acoustic guitar requires you to play clean and tidy, thus will build your skills on guitar better.

Plus, you can do this all without the hassle of wire to connect the guitar from amp. Just you and the Kapok and strum along. Easier to practise that way.

But if you insist on going straight to electric right away, I suggest:

A Squier Strat would do I guess (Approx RM500).

Or its copy from SX.

Then go get an Orange Microcrush amp with the balance.

Or maybe try ur luck on getting a 2nd hand Roland Microcube.

im interested with mainstream rock genres like those from tokio hotel, boys like girls, linkin park etc

700 you could probably get a second hand ibanez gio or maybe the ibanez starterpack..
if you want to learn electric first, by all means do so. the myth in my opinion is total bs

Can try window shop at bentley opposite Tesco damansara or search in garage sales section. Someone is selling SX package which fits your budget.
