FINALLY U CAN DUMP YOUR SUPER SUCKS TVERSITY... AND PLAY *.mkv FILES STREAMED TO YOUR PLAYSTATION 3 WITH PS3 MEDIA SERVER (NOW SUPPORTS 720P & 1080P WITH 7.1ch + SUBTITLE)

Guide to streaming videos with subtitle on PS3 with Java PS3 Media Server!

Alright guys, PS3 Media Server is a new program so much easier to set up than TVersity. It’s Java based, works for Windows or Linux and capable of transcoding any HD content to your PS3 with subtitles on the fly.

Check out the features here.

Download it here.
Latest version v1.10.5.

Playing the video files (some extracted from Readme)

- Install PS3 Media Server.

- Get and install AVISynth 2.5.7 from here. (2.5.8 has issues)

- Install codec pack, I recommend K-Lite Codec Pack.

- Set up the FFDShow Audio Decoder Config > Mixer to your preference, or this one 5.1 (3/0/2 LFE)

- Set “Autoload VSFilter” to Yes in Haali Splitter settings. *if necessary*

- Configure Haali Splitter (audio/subtitles language priorities) *if necessary*

- You can have optional codecs i.e. CoreAVC, Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative.

Fine Tuning PS3 Media Server

Mencoder settings:

Common transcode settings:

user posted image

- UPDATE: v1.10.5 has improved Mencoder settings especially with subtitles, so no need to play with AviSynth priorities anymore.

- There’s nothing much to tweak for this program as it runs perfectly fine after install.

- Go to Navigation/Share settings and add the folder you want your video files played.

- Download “VSFilter.dll” here. Place it inside Avisynth’s plugin folder found in “Program Files/Avisynth 2.5/plugin”.

- Go to Transcoding Settings to change your Video quality, I use Good Quality and everything plays without stuttering.

*- Change “Avisynth/Mencoder” to 1st priority by clicking the Up/Down arrow on the bottom.*

If your PS3 detects the Media Server, everything should play up nicely!

You can have .avi files with .ass files in the same folder with same name and they will detect just fine. It’s a much better alternative to TVersity!

Edit: I tried using the subtitle file (*.srt) with AVI files and it worked great too (provided both files have the same name)

For the record....WRT54G version 7 router sux....PS3 doesn't like it....and media center doesn't work well if you use this router. Low quality also will "hang" and lose connection.

Anyway i will change router when i get a new HD TV and shift the PS3 downstairs. But otherwise i think PS3 Media Server is an awesome software and very easy to setup. People who want to watch shows from their PC and the "family TV" is far away from your PC, this solution is perfect for you. wink.gif

x payah internet pun xper... as long u have a home network...

kalo ko ada movie files kat pc, malas nak transfer kat ps3 tu... tgk connection ko setup kat ps3 tu (wireless/wired)

software yg mayatsan recommend tu dah installed kat pc tu, boleh buat ps3 nampak movie files kat pc tu, klik file tu... boleh tgk kat tv ..

pc kena on lar...

direct streaming from pc to ps3.... kalo movie quality ko download x elok, mmg x elok punyer... kena cari HQ files

software nih boleh buat ps3 search movie files within ur pc hdd... selain dari tu, nak suruh software nih cari movies kat internet, tu cerita lain... mmg x boleh..

U have to plug direct connection...and what pc specs u running on to process the 1080 file? if stuttering, means ur pc not enuff juice to run the movie. Just use the mk2vob to split the file n run it

My buffer on the pc is only 30% used but it still stutters in low quality. I'm assuming its because of my linksys router though.

I agree with the general thread sentiment: PS3 Media Server is an awesome piece of work!

Generally, stuttering happens because:-

1 - not enough network bandwidth. Wireless is fine for normal videos but if you plan to watch HD it's better to go wired (Aztech Homeplugs ftw), or lower your mencoder quality settings, or set your mencoder bandwidth limit.

2 - not enough CPU power for transcoding. The PS3 only supports certain video formats, so if you try to watch a video that is unsupported the PS3 Media Server will try to re-encode it to a supported format as you watch. You can tell if the media server is transcoding if the trancode buffer bar is filled while you're watching. If the buffer continuously decreases while you are watching then you definitely need more CPU power to watch that movie.

Personally I've had stuttering issues with some 1080 HD movies that are encoded at High Profile@5.1. I'm planning to buy a new PC anyway, so I'm hoping a Core i7 will be sufficient for that purpose. Other people just use tools like mkv2vob to convert their HD mkv's to something that the PS3 supports. PS3 media server will just stream compatible files directly to the PS3 without any transcoding.

I used PS3 Media Server as a backup plan whenever I'm unable to view certain file formats directly from the removable storage.

Instead of reconverting the files into the codec that the PS3 can understand and accept (which is very time-consuming), I would get PS3 Media Server to do on-the-fly transcoding so that I could watch the video file while the conversion process is being done concurrently.

I was thinking of the homeplugs solution. But i wonder will it work if the LAN span two houses side by side.

I'm wondering the same thing. I read somewhere that the signal ends at the meter; on the other hand someone also told me StarHub or somewhat in Singapore streams video to houses over powerline.

If I'm rajin maybe I'll test it sometime. Mother-in-law lives next door. happy.gif

just think like this.. if can, 1 house only subscribe to the internet, others just buy homeplug and enjoy free internet without to pay anything.does it makes sense?
starhub u mentioned is using other kind of thing.

just think like this.. if can, 1 house only subscribe to the internet, others just buy homeplug and enjoy free internet without to pay anything.does it makes sense?
starhub u mentioned is using other kind of thing.
*
Actually i was reading some security FAQs some time ago....it is indeed possible for other houses to "steal" your line when you use homeplug....that's why only both the plugs you buy correspond to each other through encryption....so example if you give 1 plug to your neighbour and he plug it in next door, its possible for him to share your LAN if the houses are wired in such a way that they are connected.

That's right. A set of plugs have a common key to encrypt communications; it's somewhat like a WEP or WPA key for wireless. Otherwise it's hard to tell where your information is going. smile.gif

I stand corrected on Starhub. The idea did sound a bit farfetched but I'm always willing to take everything with a pinch of salt. smile.gif

Anyway, let's get back to discussing the media server. ... nothing else to say, it's great! lol.

Can u all suggest what wireless router that work great for this purpose?

And one more thing, if my PC is in the room, but my PS3 at ruang tamu (same floor). Is there any interference or any quality reduction while streaming between my PC and PS3?

Plays all my MKV and AVIs perfectly. However there are some MP4 that cant be played (Nyoron's Gundam 00 S2 episode 24,25 but 23 can play).

EDIT: I forced transcoding for MP4, and all episodes of Gundam 00 S2 MP4 plays now.

FMA2 ep 1 on my comp it stutters but when i open the DirectVOBSub, the subtitles suddenly becomes smaller n the stuttering stops.

Probably you can try using AVISynth as number 1 priority instead of MEncoder and make sure you have the VSFilter.dll installed in the plugins folder of AVISynth.

It just means that your CPU cannot keep up with the transcoding. Letting the buffer fill up gives PS3MS a head start.

I think problem is with the wireless signal/connection. I've had that problem b4 but after restarting the router.

Another thing to do is set the video quality to HD over Wifi or something. After doing this I don encounter any stuttering problem when playing mkv files.

I've tried PMS over Remote Play using PSP and it works beautifully. Video playing was smooth. Watched 10 mins of Infernal Affairs 720p mkv with no stutterings biggrin.gif

Guys, Just to wanted to add

This program also works for those whom have 360 consoles. I found out by mistake when updating my console.

enemysaxon: Correct you need a PC to run the program in order to view MKV . * files on your PS3. If you have installed the Real Alternative Codec u can view RA files as well.

Cheers.

can someone tell me what is the keyint stand for?

BTW, my settings is

keyint=10:vqmax=2:vqmin=1

almost lossless quality, i watch it using my 32" full HD LCD TV, quality are good even in close distance, mostly i use it to watch anime, the colour are good, but depends on the quality of the video also

so far i'm connect my laptop to my router using LAN cable, then PS3 connect to router via wireless, most of the time is lagless, just set the buffer size to 600, abit slow when startup, but really enjoy it after that. thumbup.gif

however, some anime the audio and video are out of sync, and some anime cannot be played, dont know what's wrong, even with different kind of decoder in the PMS hmm.gif

I think key interval is the number of frames in between a key frame. A key frame is a basically a full frame, and the next 10 frames (with your settings) will only contain changes from that frame.

u kena pastikan lagging tu sebab network ke sebab cpu.
try play balik file tu pakai #TRANSCODE# --> Mencoder.
pastu tengok buffer kat media server:
- kalau dia steady/naik masa lagging, maknanya network. boleh beli homeplug thumbup.gif
- kalau dia menurun, pastu kosong & lagging, maknanya cpu. beli quad core tongue.gif atau kalau ada graphics card NVidia yg support CUDA, boleh try CoreAVC 1.9+ bersama dgn AviSynth/Mencoder.

This is an awesome software. I got a NAS (Dlink DNS-323) and is it possible to install and run the PMS from the NAS? If this possible, I don't need to turn on my PC (save energy) and moreover all my files are located at the NAS.

Nope...it needs to be on a PC as all the transcoding is done by the CPU.

Try 'Twonky' to install it on a NAS..I used twonky but no transcoding yaa.

nope, don't need Dvico Tivx or WDTV. while those devices are hassle-free, using a media server is much cheaper, assuming you already have a PC to run it on. smile.gif

hm.. let's start with the symptoms.
does the avi file appear on the XMB?
and what errors does it say when you select the file from the XMB?
have you tried any of the other options in the #-TRANSCODE-# folder?

Added on July 14, 2009, 10:30 amAnyone considering to purchase Homeplugs, you might want to get the Powerline HD ones (1Gbps). Apparently it's set to hit Europe by August, so we should see it available after that.

Source: http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2009/...tarter_kit.html

(Not to be confused with D-Link's DHP-301 product, or Netgear's HDX, which still uses the current Powerline AV standard).

I currently use Aztech's HL108E. Stuttering occurs when my bitrate hits 60Mbps and above. sad.gif A bit the sien looking for firmware updates that might help.

guys need to hear your experience...

Since using media server on my ps3, I find that i get disconnected a lot from PSN...
or maybe its just a coincidence because that happened when Streamyx really screwed up a couple of months back. But now my problem still not solved even though internet speed is super fast.

So that's why I'm thinking it might be by enabling ps3 media server option, i'm getting this DC a lot. How bout you guys?

i've enabled media server all along. From time to time i do disabled/enabled for testing. The one that keep dc is our ISP services.

You can browse contents of archives by turning on 'Browse .RAR/.ZIP/.CBR archives' under 'Navigation/Share Settings'.

Look for a dropdown menu that shows something like 'keyint=1:vqscale=1:vqmin=2'.

Where do I carry out this step? in PS3 Media Server?

- Set up the FFDShow Audio Decoder Config > Mixer to your preference, or this one 5.1 (3/0/2 LFE)

I think you do that in ffdshow. You're most likely using a codec pack, so you should find it somewhere in the codec pack's menu.

hm, i can't remember what i did to make it run on W7 RC.

at the moment, i just have it run as per normal from the Startup menu.

if referring to the PS3 not being able to see PMS, maybe check your firewall rules?

besides checking firewall, etc., try checking which IP the media server is listening on in the Trace window. It should be on the same subnet as the PS3.

I've also heard there's conflicts when you enable windows media sharing, altho not sure if that applies to XP.

Problem solved. For my case I had to use 'Force networking on interface' under the 'General Configuration' tab. After that it has no problem detecting the PS3.

Need help

I have an issue with mkv files with DTS audio.
I'm using Tversity and tsMuxer. Output to all formats TS/M2TS/AVCHD.

My Issue is that I'm not gettting any audio though my streams.
PS3 > AMP with DTS > LCD all via HDMI.

What could be the Issue? I'm not even getting any sound by playing on my PC either.
Can't test out the mkv file, wont play.
I've converted a few previously and no issues so far.

Advance thanks.

There's a checkbox called Keep DTS audio in stream, which I use. The PS3 then just passes the DTS stream to my decoder.

No you don't need to be connected to the internet. As long as your PC and PS3 are on the same network, you're fine smile.gif

Streaming MKV via Wifi is quite laggy. Go to Transcoding settings and look for "Video Quality Settings". Under Mpeg2 Video quality settings, change the value from drop down menu and select the value that you want. You might need to play around with the value until you have the best settings for your setup. My settings is "keyint=25:vqmax=5:vqmin=2 /* Good quality for HD Wifi Transcoding */" whenever I want to stream MKVs thru Wifi on my PS3.

you hardly will see avi and mp4 lag in PS3 media server because it doesn't need your PC to transcode it, your PC will just pass everything to your PS3 and let it do the job, thus it is faster.

but i think the max resolution for wifi transcode with good quality while not lag would be 720p, wired connection is always the best

me too, while i was watching Shinjuku Incident with DTS audio, just few mins after playing the movie is start to lag, then i pause it for 1mins it play smooth through out the movie, but somewhere till 75% of the movie it lag again, so i just pause it for 1 mins again.

but i think is because of the DTS audio is using too much bandwidth hmm.gif

me too using wired and stuttering when playing .mkx file with .dts stream, 1 solution is to mux mkv video to avi, then problem solve since the audio stream in avi is mp3 or aac.

Previously I have not encountered any issues of shutter, cuz I mostly watch tv series.

I notice that the audio = DD5.1, and the video if it's;
AVC = it never shutters before
Mpeg2 = this is the culprit! when it goes above 100 mb/s transfer

"this is shown when u press [sellect] on the DS3"

.. and when ever it exceeds 100mb/s it starts to halt and jitter ..

May I know what or how to over come the transfer rate and keep it below 100mb/s or better still 50mb/s and still have the quality sustained?

ps3 media server transcodes all incompatible videos to mpeg2. Unfortunately mpeg2 is not size-efficient, so the size of the movie being sent to the ps3 becomes a lot bigger. Assuming this is not an issue with your CPU, u can either prep ur movies with mkv2vob, lower your transcoding quality settings, or run a direct wired connection between ur pc and the ps3. Personally I chose the last option, adding a 2nd gigabit adapter to the pc and running cat6 to the ps3, bypassing my router.

Ps: the Mbps display on the ps3 is actually incorrect when the video stutters. The actual is actually much lower (maybe around 50 Mbps max).

those who have this problem is because of the LAN problem. You guys is either running on 54mbps or 100mbps. Try the 1000mbps but you must make sure your PC ethernet port is a gigabit port before you purchase the gigabit wireless router else you will still have the problem. Imagine 1km long road with 500m highway and 500m trunk road...what will happen..

Previously I have not encountered any issues of shutter, cuz I mostly watch tv series.

I notice that the audio = DD5.1, and the video if it's;

*
some solution you can use here

1. change to wired connection for more bandwidth
2. decrease transcode quality in media server
3. better CPU (somehow i dont think this is quite related)

before this i use wifi transcode, then the anime/movie is playing the opening and ending, shutter will always occur.

after i changed to wired connection, transcode settings set to highest quality with no quality lost, it play smooth as silk thumbup.gif

ps3 media server gui is a streaming program on PC (which PC shares its media), then media stream into ps3 for playback (phat and slim).

weird....some of my video cant be play

it's either "the file is corrupted" or "file not supported"

I even tried to install AVIsynth, Haali VSfilter..
some say switch off the tsMuser when H264....can help reduce the " the file is corrupted" but it seems not working on me

hong1380: If you get that error go the the trancode file on the PS3. Browse the file your looking for and try to play those files. Usually they work from there.

1) LAN or Wifi
2) PC Spec (MKV files will rock your processor. P4 can take up 100%)

Just wondering if it helps smoothen the streaming if I were to upgrade to a better router say wireless N?

I know my current LAN could go up to 54 MB and wireless N could go up to 300 MB... just wondering if any forumer tried upgrading their router and does it helps icon_rolleyes.gif

actually wired connection is already sufficient to do the job, i think some of the stuttering problem is from the software itself hmm.gif

now i use the new beta version and sometime i play video halfway then it play at hyper speed, and the timeline keep decreasing, while the audio is playing like normal doh.gif

my media server running fine in window 7, if your media server crashed after few mins or few secs, then is most probably the java version you have on your pc

that day after i updated to the latest java version, the media server stop working, need to revert back to v.

use the term PMS is a bit weird for me

to revert back to old java, just download the previous version of java from java website, check their archive, revert back to previous version is the same as install to new version, quite flexible

Just tried the PS3 Media Server in my windows 7, and it work great for 1080p mkv files, works for rm files as well. However i have some question on the Video scaler.
I found out that some of the video do not fix properly to my LCD TV, some of the top and bottom part of the video not shown because overshoot out of screen, and it seems it do not fix to screen properly. So are there anyway i could configure the video to display in correct ratio and and auto extend and fit to my LCD screen properly (like how the media player do)?
Currently i have to manually put in the correct "width" and "Height".

Note : i believe the overshoot only occur if the video resolution is large, and i think it can auto extend and fix to screen, problem only is it can;t autoshrink to fit to screen.

too bad it does not detect my PS3..my pc is connected using LAN cable to the modem and my PS3 is wirelessly connected to the modem.
Im using TM Net Ryger weireless modem with built in router.

Is it because of the TM modem with router? Should i use a separate router such as Linksys? I tried disabling windows firewall but it still coudnt detect my ps3..
hope u guys can help...

my problem is the pms seems doesn't start to transcode at all, I look at the "traces", only 1 line of log after I press to play the video on ps3:
QUOTE
[New I/O server worker #1-2] TRACE 12:11:21.402 Starting transcode/remux of "abcdefg".rmvb

then no more log, my ps3 there just show "Data is corrupted"....
any clue? all video files appear to be like this, can't play at all, be it rmvb, mpeg, mp4.....
do i need to install any codec? I do have MPlayerX and VLC installed, all video plays fine on my Mac.

Added on November 13, 2010, 1:49 pmfinally it able to work for rmvb file!
I install the old old version v. 1.04, both v1.20 beta and v1.10 stable also doesn't work on my Mac...... this is so la weird~

well, just to share, in case any Mac user find v1.20 and v1.10 doesn't work, go for v1.04 smile.gif

Which is weird since mkv is such a basic movie format. and like the guy above me it plays well on my mac using vlc. btw my ps3 is not modded.

1. PS3 at the moment cannot play MKV format
2. To watch any kind of unrecognized movie format, you have to hook up to any MEDIA SERVER, example PS3 media server on your any available PC/LAPTOP
3. Once setup, and connected to your WIFI/LAN, you may see PS3 MEDIA server in your PS3. then you can browse the FILEs.

rmvb suck...

if you want to trancode rmvb, try go to Transcode Settings > Common Transcode Settings > Force transcode for the following extensions, then type .rmvb,.rm, i think it works for me, but i hardly play rmvb file, but sometime will have audio out of sync problem, so play around with the A/V sync until you get it right.

given the same file, let's say video stream of 480p, 16:9, but one is avi and the other is rmvb, avi give better picture quality compare to rmvb on my TV, the picture in rmvb is pixalated and hurt my eyes.

depends on what audio stream is in the movie you are streaming, if AAC should be no stuttering

at first i include my music library in the share folder in pms, then stutter occur which they normally dont, and the startup time for pms is too long, go to website and check they say might be caused by the long list of files and folder needed to load, so i stop sharing the folder and now my pms back to normal.

anybody got "cinavia" problem while playing .mkv movie on ps3?
today is my 1st time i got the error code 3 message:

“Audio outputs temporarily muted. Do not adjust the playback volume. The content being played is protected by Cinavia™
and is not authorized for playback on this device. For more information, see http://www.cinavia.com. Message Code 3.”

it happened after 15-20mins of playing time & totally left no sound but the movie still playing with that error message appeared on the screen. so now ps3 firmware is detecting what video we're playing on the ps3 with analyze the sound out of it? isn't it break violation of user privacy or something? tongue.gif

I'm facing skipping problem... Avi, Mkv, Rmvb mostly...
its like I just played the movie at 5min, then it jump to end of the movie =.=//

to play back my previous spot, I've to 'go to' then press O, O & O...
The worst case I have to do 5~10 times for a 2 hours movie play, very annoying!!! mad.gif

I do change my wifi channel from 11 to 1 instead of use the default 6...
never try cable connection... PC quite far from living room...

Anyone suffer the same thing??

Mencoder settings:

user posted image

It’s a much better alternative to TVersity!
whistling.gif

Edit: I tried using the subtitle file (*.srt) with AVI files and it worked great too (provided both files have the same name)

What is the pc minimum requirement to play 1080p .mkv file? When I run the video keeps on stuttering. My laptop specs are not powerful at all.

Core2duo. win7. 2.1Ghz

Is it because of this specs are so low?

What is the pc minimum requirement to play 1080p .mkv file? When I run the video keeps on stuttering. My laptop specs are not powerful at all.

Core2duo. win7. 2.1Ghz

Is it because of this specs are so low?

What video quality setting you set? If you on wifi you should choose wifi quality there biggrin.gif

Hello guys,

Ive been using this for about a year already, but I still don't know how to embed subtitles in it haha...

I think last time I tried, it says subtitles files not found.

Was referring to .srt sub.

Any helps? Thanks in advance.

have u tried renaming the .sub or .srt to one same name?

like e.g
movie name.avi
movie name.srt

or

movie name.mkv
movie name.sub

Anyone have workaround on "cinavia" issue?
Most of the movies downloaded sure encounter this especially those .mkv, .avi, etc.

Use wired connection. I tried wireless connection to stream 720p anime and it lag quite badly, so I connected my ps3 to the modem with Ethernet cable. Now I can stream 1080p anime without shuttering.
I would say the pathetic speed of 54 Mbps is a nono for streaming above 480p.
My network is 2Mbps by Tmnet Streamyx so the inbound and outbound connection are mediocre, but inside home network it's 100 mbps full time, provided you used wired connection.
Also, try setting transcoding cache above 200 MB

I'm also tested this on my phone, Galaxy Note II connected straight to my shared anime folder through wifi. Even though the phone played 720p video perfectly with video stored in phone, the video lag badly with streaming through wifi.
