victim here... 8600M GS, juz sent to service center 2 days ago, third time after using for abt 1.5yr...

it doesn't matter where u use the laptop, air con or not.. the main problem with the GPU (G84M and G86M, ie 8400M G/GS/GT, 8600 GS/GT and 8700M GT) is that the solderin material will fail if the card experience rapid change in temperature...

so the only way to prevent the problem from happening, besides not using the laptop, is to keep the card either cold or hot for a long time (read: doesn't matter if u game or overclock or whatever)

ways i ve tried include using Folding@Home GPU client (to keep the card in Performance 3D mode at all times, 7xC to 8xC, depending on the work), disabling Powermizer (so that the clock will stay in only 1 clock speed), using cooler, but that doesn't seem to be a permanent soution...

the only way, as TS suggested, is to to replace the GPU with, perhaps GeForce 9M... but no, the OEMs are not going to do that cuz that will mean lots of extra expenses (especially in times like this)... a recall of the GPU??? Nvidia already said they will not do that, reason being that it will bring down the whole company should they do that...

that's why Nvidia offered to compensate the OEMs for the spoilt GPU that they ve changed (less reason for OEMs to change to a new GPU), and that's y we'll still keep getting G8xM GPU in the future... however, Nvidia has the G84M using the old (which has no problem at all) material instead...

also, i am not sure abt the others, but BenQ S41 users have managed to argue with BenQ to waive the fee for replacing the mobo, which is RM1.5k iirc...

so in the mean time, good luck...

Electromigration on the soldering material... It is quite an issue in any IC design with super-small size...

i owned a 1420 8400M GS 128MB, i just have the GPU problem recently ... lucky is still under warranty. if not i gonna cry already. i call dell, they come my house and replace the motherboard for me ... but what is, the warranty is ending soon. GGness.  The tempreture for browsing internet and listen to music is 64 - 63. is it too high ? but for my advise is, if u owned this lappy, PLEASE DUN PLAY GAME USING THIS LAPTOP. after change the motherboard the display output on the monitor is not working, dono what is wrong. i mean after pressing Fn+F8.
*
pls read the first few posts to understand how the GPU will fail...

doesn't matter if u game or not...

There's no Apple notebook line with that particular graphic chip. Perhaps you're referring to the 9400M? That is an integrated chip.

I notice that 8600GS notebooks that came after Oct last year have a lower breakdown rate, as is the case with my BenQ S41.
What is your load temp?
*
my S41 changed the GPU in Jun 08, Dec 08 and Mar 09...

fired an email to BenQ once to enquire abt my GPU... and they claim that the GPU installed in Mar 09 is a new revision...

let's juz wait and see... hmm.gif

nope, there's no way u can do that...

if u try to argue, they merely say that ur GPU is of the latest revision and should not encounter the same problem again...

unless u have an extreme case (eg a few services in 1 yr), they may consider upgrade the hardware for u...

well, my old S41 dun show anything that indicates it has a new part... on GPU-Z it still shows Rev A2 as before...

the release date u mention does not indicate anything as well... merely says 8600M GS is released in May 07...

so wat u can do is either sell it off and get another 1, or pray that it will not spoil again... i chose the first option after servicing 3 times in 1.5 yrs...

Thats even better! I meant you guys have it at a much cheaper price than here in aus. It was much cheaper than it is now in aus mid last year but I think its a fading model and almost out of stock they raise price.
*
not really fading... currently Nvidia is rebranding it's GeForce 9M series to GeForce 100M instead... spec wise it remains the same for many models... so it's performance is still competitive...
