RAFA: WE MUST LEARN FROM LAST YEAR Jimmy Rice 20 March 2009
Rafa Benitez believes Liverpool can overcome a rejuvenated Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-finals - but only if lessons are learned from last season. The London club beat Liverpool 4-3 over two legs last term after John Arne Riise gave them a crucial advantage with an OG at Anfield. The first leg will once again be played at home on Wednesday, April 8 - and Benitez knows it is vital his side take a good result to Stamford Bridge on April 14. "Hopefully it won't make a difference to us that the second leg is away," Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv. "We have to think about the first game at Anfield with our fans behind us and look to get a positive result to take to Stamford Bridge. "We need to make sure we don't make a mistake in the first leg like we did in last year's semi-final. "They will be two tough games but we are playing well and clearly we are confident we can win." Benitez had hoped to avoid an English side, but he added: "At this stage of the competition, you know you'll play against a good team. Chelsea are a very good team. "We know each other very well and this is an exciting draw. "We knew it would be difficult to avoid an English team but we need to approach the two games with confidence. We've done the double over them this season in the league but clearly these two games in the quarter-finals will be different." If the Reds beat Chelsea they'll face Barcelona or Bayern Munich in the semis - with the first leg away.

BOSS PRAISE FOR SHUT-OUT KING REINA
Rafael Benitez today hailed Pepe Reina as the 'complete' goalkeeper as the Spain international closes in on another Anfield record. The Reds' number 25 requires just one more clean sheet to reach 100 shut-outs and if he were to reach the milestone in the next three matches, he would break a club record set by Ray Clemence three decades ago. Clemence took 200 matches to reach a century of clean sheets, while Reina has kept 99 in 196. Benitez acknowledges the assistance of Reina's teammates in helping him to within touching distance of the record, but the Anfield boss believes the standards the custodian has set for himself are the main reason for his continuing success. "Clearly the team is defending well as a team," said Benitez. "I can remember a lot of situations when Pepe was one versus one with a striker and he has made some fantastic saves so I think that he deserves this record if he can break it because he is a very good goalkeeper. "Hopefully it will happen this weekend because if it does it will mean that we have a better chance of winning." Benitez admits he is impressed with Reina's knack of creating chances for his teammates with excellent distribution, as demonstrated in Liverpool's 4-1 win at Old Trafford last weekend. "I think that Pepe is a fantastic goalkeeper with a great character," added Benitez. "He is very positive and he is very offensive in his play and that is very important when you talk about a goalkeeper because it means he is always looking to launch a counter attack. "He also makes great saves and remains calm at the most important moments. "For me he is a very good goalkeeper and he is very complete."

CALLAGHAN: BRING ON CHELSEA
Kop legend Ian Callaghan believes Liverpool are more than a match for Chelsea and is confident the Reds will make it through to the semi-finals of the Champions League. The club's record appearance holder, who played 857 games in a red shirt, featured in the club's first European Cup triumph in 1977, and he sees no reason why Rafael Benitez's side can't go all the way to Rome once again. "The only disappointing thing is we have to play the second leg away from home, but Liverpool are capable of beating anyone over two legs," Callaghan told Liverpoolfc.tv. "I don't fear anybody and we've beaten Chelsea twice in the league this season so I am quite confident we can beat them in Europe again. "Chelsea are coming into a bit of form under Guus Hiddink but we are flying under Rafa and I bet every team in that draw didn't want to face us over two legs. "They beat us in the semi-final last season but I'm confident we will do the job this time." A semi-final tie against La Liga leaders Barcelona or Bayern Munich lies in wait, and Callaghan added: "You should never back against Liverpool in Europe. "A final against Barcelona in Rome would have been fantastic but we have beaten them before in the Champions League under Rafa, so there's no reason why we can't go all the way again." THOMMO: IT'LL BE TIGHT
Meanwhile Phil Thompson believes his former club can overcome Chelsea and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League - but he expects it to be close. The Reds have been paired with the London club in the Champions League for the fifth consecutive season. "It's just incredible that it's Chelsea again after the amount of times we've played each other," said Anfield legend Thompson. "We know them and Chelsea are just starting to come into form. There's going to be very little between the two sides because they're two top class teams." The first leg is scheduled to take place at Anfield on April 8, with Chelsea handed home advantage for the return fixture on April 14. Thompson admits he would have preferred the second leg to be played at Anfield, but remains confident Rafael Benitez's side can set up a semi-final meeting with either Barcelona or Bayern Munich. He added: "Ideally, I would have to have the away-leg first. "It makes a difference having the first-leg at home. If it was the other way around I'd be sitting here rubbing my hands with glee because in a second-leg at Anfield Liverpool can beat anybody. "It was a big disappointment to lose there last season, but I know it will be an extremely tight game. "But, I've said all the long I think Liverpool over two-legs can do anything and I fancy them to go through."

for all the hype about rigged draws and the annual liverpool-chelsea european friendly tournament, i'm wondering why nobody highlighted barcelona vs bayern munich's draw?
personally for me it's the draw of the night. with all the hoohahs surrounding english teams i believe the most frustrated fans should be theirs, considering both did majorly well in the last round.

Whatever happens, Torres must be kept fresh and fit!! Thats all Rafa and his staff need to work on, Torres will do the rest. As much as he wants us to win the league, i know the champions league winner medal is what he's been rooting for all this time. Added on March 20, 2009, 10:35 pmAlso if you're having a quiet one tonight -- tune into ESPN and watch again the glorious 1-4 win at OT. This post has been edited by hfi: Mar 20 2009, 10:35 PM
