AS the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 17 times in their history - 10 times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup twice, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

Defensively, I think this is the worst performance after the 4-3 result against Hull City rclxub.gif

Credits to LIV, they are definitely the deserved winner on the night but for them to do a double on us, its hard to swallow. Just like what Man City did to us last season.

But like what SAF, the team must now respond to the latest defeat:

Boss demands a response

Sir Alex Ferguson rued defensive errors against Liverpool, but refused to castigate Nemanja Vidic and says his side will now do one thing: respond.

United have become accustomed to having things their own way at Old Trafford this season, so defeat – and 4-1 to our fiercest rivals – sticks in the throat. “It’s difficult to defend a 4-1 defeat. We got in front and then threw the game away. It’s a hard one to take,” admitted the boss. “But at this club it’s always about how you respond. When you lose a game: respond. And that is what we will do.”

Vidic made an error for Liverpool’s first goal, and his second-half sending off for a foul on Steven Gerrard led to their third goal on the way to an embarrassing scoreline. But Sir Alex didn't stick the boot in. “Nemanja has been unbelievably consistent for us this season. Players do have off days, and he’s made a mistake. He’s a human being, all players make mistakes. It’s just a costly one for us.”

The United boss didn’t have any complaints about the Serbian’s sending off. “It looked as if he [Gerrard] was clear to have a shot at goal. Whether Rio could have got across, I don’t know. I couldn't really argue with the decision. We’d have been looking for a red card if it was against us.

“It was one of those days, we made uncharacteristic mistakes. In big games you don’t want to do that. If you see the consistency of our defending over the last two years, you don’t expect it. If you win 4-1 at Old Trafford you deserve the plaudits, you can’t deny Liverpool that.

“But if the league was starting today, you’d take a four-point advantage with a game in hand. The goal difference is narrowed, it’s only five goals now. It was a bad day, but we have to kick on."

Park: Forget and move on

QUOTE
Ji-sung Park says the Reds must forget the 4-1 defeat and remember that the league title is still in United's hands.

Park was one of United's best players during the defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford. While he was disappointed with the result, Park and team-mates will only be looking forward.

"Obivously it's not a good result for us," he told ManUtd.kr. "But the league is not over and we're still top.

"If we produce good performances, like we have been doing, for the rest of our league games then this defeat will not be a big problem."

United now have a week to prepare before the next Premier League match away to Fulham on Saturday. It's a time for reflection, but not too much reflection.

“We don’t have a match until next weekend, so it’s good that we can take some rest and get ready to play Fulham," Ji added. "We must forget about this result, because next weekend I am sure we will be back with a good performance.

“We have about ten league matches left, so from now on it is really important that we win our games, and to win the title, we have to play well."

Rio rues 'critical' moment

QUOTE
For Rio Ferdinand, the disappointing defeat to Liverpool had an obvious game-breaking moment.

With 15 minutes left and United piling on the pressure at 2-1 down, Nemanja Vidic was shown a straight red for bringing down Steven Gerrard, and Fabio Aurelio curled home the killer third goal from the resultant free-kick.

"It was a nervy start from both teams but we took the lead and started to get a foot in the game," Ferdinand told MUTV.  "Even when they were 2-1 up, we started to turn the screw in the second half and Carlos Tevez had a half-chance.

"But the sending-off and third goal came at a really critical time. I thought the referee's decision to send Vida off was debatable as I could have got over there to cover."

Another possible turning point came in the first half, when United were leading through Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty, as Vidic's mistake allowed Fernando Torres to pounce.

But Ferdinand refused to castigate his fellow centre-back, saying: "Vida has been one of our most consistent players this season and everyone is allowed to make a mistake, so we won’t be getting on his back."

Ferdinand even managed to take a postive from what was a distinctly bad day at the office, adding: "Losing any game is disappointing, losing to your big rivals is even worse and the scoreline compounds that.

"But we have to turn this into a positive. This game will have torn out any sub-conscious complacency there may have been. We got a rude awakening today that if we don’t go out and work hard as a collective unit then we won’t get the results.

"We now have time to dust ourselves down and get our minds on the game against Fulham next week. It would have been nice if that game was right round the corner but we have to deal with what’s in front of us."

I read the Goal.com piece but were we tired physically/mentally? Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo, Park, Anderson and Carrick all looked very fresh. :S

I don't think fatigue is much of the issue. More of complacency starting to creap into some of their minds with some of them started to say things about quadruple/etc [especially Rooney with his "big mouth" statement] sweat.gif

Its very rare to see Vidic performed so below par eh? sweat.gif Before the game, Jamie Reeves was praising how Vidic is the no nonsense CB who will just clear the danger away without doing anything fancy/exceed his ability. What was he trying to do that led to the Torres's goal? icon_question.gif

yeah.. misjudgment, coupled with nervous feelings.. i already know if the ball bounce, the defensive party will be in trouble.. but hey, i still think vidic is the best defender in the world.. best defender doesnt mean he dont make mistakes right..
*
I would have thought Rio will be the one marking Torres since he is the more pacey one instead of Vidic? Still remember Vidic struggled against the pace of Bellamy as well last season.

Not quite the way you wanted things to pan out, eh? Oh well, there's plenty of games left for her to watch Utd play. Yesterday was definitely uncharacteristic of Utd.

Btw, I happened across a can of something with your name on it  tongue.gif

And as Corez said, 4-1 ain't so bad. 4 point lead, 1 game in hand  nod.gif
*
Ain't so bad?

1. Its at OT
2. Thrashed by your fierce rival
3. Doubled by your rival

So its still bad! laugh.gif

Hopefully the short term pain will be compensated by the league trophy at the end of the season? biggrin.gif

Now Evans is taking advantage from Vidic's absence. What a lucky b'tard.  tongue.gif

He has been doing that long time ago when Rio was injured with his back injury! laugh.gif

But based on the run-in to the final game, it seems we have the trickiest one out of all. Really hope this heavy lost serve as a wake up call to everyone in the squad, quashing aside that the EPL is ours.

I want our big game player Fletchinho back. It did surprise me that he didn't start. Carrick performance has been shaky this season. It's been some time (except the long ball delivery to Berba at FA cup) that we have seen him picking out the front line with his cross field pass. It's now either overhit or cut of by the defenders.
*
I wouldn't say Carrick has been shaky this season, maybe for the past few games yes but overall he still did ok IMO.

Edit: Vidic will miss TWO games, @ FUL & v AST since it is his 2nd RC of the season. Ironically, his 1st RC was against LIV as well @ Anfield for 2 YC doh.gif
