Hi afternoon guys,
I was testing my a350 i noticed that when i take very close shots,
it will not allow me to click on it. I have to stand a distance and then zoom in..
I see that there is an icon like this ((0)) indicating i can take the picture.. and the icon of just  0  will not allow me to take.
Is this a normal situation? what happens if i get a macro lense do i still need to take it at a distance?

Thanks bros.

apparently every lens has it Min distance..anywhere closer and it would not b able to focus...but if u really wanted to take the shot regardless of whether its focused or not..u can switch to manual focus...

so similiarly..if u get a macro lens..u can go very very near..but stil..there is a min distance to follow....

all lens as a minimum focus distance (MFD). You can check your lens manual or search the lens website

for example the 18-70mm MFD is 380mm
My old sigma 70-300mm MFD is 1.4m
beercan... is err... 1.1m

the MFD means, the distance between the front element of the lens to the object

you can also disable this feature and let you shoot even it is not focused
Menu - Priority Setup - [AF, Release]

2 possibilities :

1. You focus too close (every lens has their minimum focus distance).
2. You focus on something flat (camera cannot lock focus point on the subject).

There is a minimum distance where your lens can focus. This is called the Minimum Focus Distance (MFD) and is a physical limitation of the lens. So if your object is nearer than the MFD, then obviously you will not be able to get a focus lock, hence unable to take the picture. The reason why if you do not have a focus lock then you cannot take a picture is because this was set as a default setting in your camera. You might be able to disable this in the menu system (I'm not sure because I don't have an A350). Hope that helps explain things a little bit to you. smile.gif

achew, going up to full-frame can be easier if you do this:

1) buy a full-frame ultra-wide first, to be used as your standard zoom on APS-C

E.g. Tamron/Minolta/Sigma 17-35mm F2.8-4, Minolta 17-35mm F3.5G, Carl Zeiss 16-35mm F2.8 SSM

2) buy a full-frame telephoto

E.g. Minolta 70-210mm F4, Minolta 80-200mm F2.8G HS APO, Tamron/Sigma/Minolta/Sony 70-200mm F2.8

3) Only after you get a full-frame, will you need to get a standard zoom on FF, e.g.:

- Minolta 28-135mm F4-4.5
- Minolta 28-85mm F3.5-4.5
- Minolta 24-50mm F4
- Minolta 24-85mm F3.5-4.5
- Minolta 28-105mm F3.5-4.5
- Minolta/Sony 24-105mm F3.5-4.5
- Minolta/Tamron 28-75mm F2.8
- Tamron 28-105mm F2.8
- Minolta 28-70mm F2.8G
- Sigma 28-70mm F2.8
- Sigma 24-60mm F2.8
- Sigma 24-70mm F2.8
- Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 HSM
- Carl Zeiss 24-70mm F2.8 SSM

Then again, it is not necessary to have a standard zoom all the time as you will find the 50mm F1.4 to be very useful in a lot of conditions!

Bear in mind that macro will be less magnified; 1:1 on FF is like 1:1.4 on APS-C only.

babyakuma, the MFD of the kit lens is 38cm from the sensor plane to the object. If you want something that can focus very close there is:

- Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 (20cm)
- Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 (20cm)

These lenses literally let you touch the subject and still focus.

nickilala, that's the beercan; the big beercan is the 75-300mm F4.5-5.6 (the Macro wording would be on 300mm.)

The beercan is identical in size to a real beercan (our Malaysian coke can-size one doesn't count...)

big beercan is almost the same size with beercan.....

big beercan comes with a switch to control the focus.... can switch to Full or Limit.... so it will only search half the focus and not all the way to the end.....
