hey guys..

I finally got a HDMI cable, got it for free after buying a Panasonic Viera 32' TV.. rclxm9.gif

but when I surf around to get info from the cable, I can see that the cable's cost is quite high, but the range is also big. hmm.gif

By range, I mean there are HDMI cables that worth a whopping RM700 @ RM 800++ and there a HDMI cables that's worth a mere RM100 and below...

so, is there a difference in the quality, comparing the low-price cable to the high ones? icon_question.gif

Currently I'm using my console with the Component cable (the green, blue, red ones), for me the picture is ok (of course, previously I used only the composite cable tongue.gif ).. so is it advisable to use the FREE HDMI cable? (I think maybe they give me the cheap one... ) or should I just stick to my component cable?

anyone has experience comparing the low-price HDMI vs high-price HDMI vs Xbox 360's hybrid Component cable? hmm.gif

thanks guys....

Unless the component cable is ultra high-end, it does make some difference. But high end HDMI VS low end HDMI doesn't make any difference, unless the cable is broken or it's long

oh, so those high-price HD cables delivers the same quality as those of the lower price.... thank God...

what about the differences between the HDMI cable and the composite cable? Most of the site that I've stumbled upon told me that there are differences, but not as big as the difference between component and composite..

the length also plays a significant part? blink.gif

i thought only CAT.5 cable's length plays a part in it's data transfer laugh.gif

anyway, the component cable that I'm using right now is the ones that comes with the consoles tongue.gif

That's right man, because HDMI delivers digital signal, it's either 1 or 0.

what model is your viera?

your console have a hdmi port? why don't you try running on hdmi and compare when running on component, and see which one gives better PQ and colour. different tv manufacturer have different settings for their tv, so in some tv the component might look better or vice-versa.

it's TX-32LE8M....

orait guys, I've tried both the component and the HDMI cable for my xbox 360... i don't see any HUGE significant differences...

something wrong with my setting, or something wrong with my eye? blink.gif

oh, one more thing, there's an option under the Console Setting - Display - Reference Level and Console Setting - Display - Colour Space...

what does these two options do?

is your 32" HD ready or Full HD? only Full HD will realize the difference of component cable & HDMI.

You may change to high reference level. The reference level is to regulate the color contrast on some HDTV if i'm not mistaken.

I do not have any idea on color space but my guess is to regulate color palette on display.

nahh, it's HD ready.. i've been searching for a 32" Full HD TV but I don't think there's any. Full HD starts @ 40" , or so they say... shakehead.gif

only Full HD? dangg...

orait, I'll try and re-set the reference level and colour space. Been through some other forums and they explained something about 0 being black and 255 being white and the miscalculation on certain TV (some TV sees 7 as black).. rclxub.gif

anyone has tweaked their displays using the options given? happy.gif

I don't think we can broadly describe what's "low-price" or "high-price" cables. Price is relative. But I do want to say that there are poor quality HDMI cables. I have my PS3 hooked up to a 1080pSamsung 40A650 TV. Connection-wise, the PS3 is hooked up to my Yamaha RX-863 amplifier, and output to my TV. The cheap cable is used for HDMI out. For the first few days, everything seems fine. But then I started noticing snow, flicker, and much later, total darkness. The odd thing is that sound is still output via the HDMI cable; I'm just not seeing any display.

Thinking it was a PS3 related problem, I looked online and found some interesting theories:

1. 1080p output on PS3, with the Samsung 40A650 is no go. Must be 720p or lower
2. 1080p/24 must be disabled on both TV and PS3
3. Amplifier must not do upscaling. Set only to passthrough
4. Bad HDMI connection on amplifier. Send for repair
5. Bad HDMI cable. Change cable.

After some (very long) experiment period, I can conclude that my problem is with the HDMI cable. I can confirm this is the case because I can't output anything using the cable anymore, on any of my TV or monitor, using either the PS3, XBox360 or upscaling DVD player. It seems that the cable has deteriorated after only a couple of days' use. Just for knowledge, the cable is a 2 meter, gold-plated HDMI cable by Promax.

but then again, the quality of the picture is no different from other cables, ya?

you're experiencing the low-quality of the cable itself, right?

To make a simple point, when a working cheap cable is compared against a working expensive cable, there's no noticeable difference. I guess that particular cable was simply faulty. Anyhow, I bought that cable for only RM38. Very cheap indeed. However, the replacement cable I bought is still working fine. Got it for only RM50.

nothing wrong with your eye. no difference means the tv are properly calibrated for component and hdmi.

component cable are capable to even streams 1080p signal. so to say component will gives inferior PQ are misleading.

see how analogue signal and digital signal transmit..

user posted image

digital transfer bit by bit.. any cable transfer the same..bit by bit.. if it has failure, u can see it straight away (flicker/sound not coming out/no signal at all) while analogue signal do have differences with different cable since it can be interrupted. good cable do give more protection from outside inteference.
