what type of distortion u have?

well u can have a clean booster pedal, like Xotic RC Booster, maybe a drive pedal, u can also a compressor to tidy up a bit and a noise supressor/noise gate maybe an EQ pedal to dial in that sound,

the choices are endless.. or u can try to follow the rig set-up of your favourite guitar god?

Apart from Distortion Pedal...
You can try getting the metal pedals. rclxms.gif rclxms.gif
Such as....BOSS MT-2 or the BOSS ML-2 pedals.
Or...Digitech's Death Metal pedal. (i'm using that now. ngehehe)
All this pedals have high gain thus creating a better metal/hard rock sound.

A delay is always great for solo'ing... plus a chorus would be great for those clean Metallica riffs...

If you love metallica, a wah pedal is a MUST. I wouldn't be sure about using an MT-2 or a Digitech Death Metal. However, a Digitech Metal Master is good but it's only good for metal. Sounded like crap when I tried playing some ACDC with it.

I read somewhere that Metallica actually prefers using their amp's gain rather than using a hi-gain pedal.
But for those who's got normal amps and wants to capture Metallica's hi-gain sounds, use a pedal. rclxm9.gif

And wah pedal is a must. Death Magnetic is annoyingly full of wah-wahs (but cool). tongue.gif

Anybody knows how to recreate ACDC's sound? I've been using only my BOSS DS-1 pedal to create their sounds. sweat.gif

Instead of relying so much on Pedals for your distortion sound, a decent modeling amp like Vox's Valvetronix series is probably better. A simple (but versatile) Vox vt15 costs like, Rm550...... about the price of a slightly boutique distortion pedal.

if using Boss, try the blues driver BD-2.
i heard the Marshall jackhammer also can, but never tried it yet.
anyway, as simple as it sounds, its not easy to re-create ACDC's sound.

speaking of ACDC...

as sweet as that may sound, if the amp does not come with a foot switch, it's probably useless. unless you wanna pay someone to do the switching. remember, metallica has sound engineer, you don't.

playing metallica will definitely require a switchable distortion/overdrive unit. plus, i've figured that metallica is not really about gain. i believe MT-2 is more than capable for metallica than ML-2(this is the metal core, right?).

I support the Metal Muff suggestion, that thing is the king for the 80's thrash metal zone.

What amp are you using? The amp plays a much bigger role than pedals. You can have a huge ass pedalboard but running them into a lousy amp won't do much improvement to tone.

yeah..for starters best start with multy fx...so u dont have to pening2 search what is the best pedal to use..
but i recommend later if u want a gud distortion pedal or should i say brutal distortion type of tone, use EHX METAL MUFF..
add noise surpressor and eq..then its up to u if u want other optional pedals to use.. laugh.gif

someone once told me that u can get practically any sound with a DS-1 + TS808 + Boss EQ & Noise suppressor & Compressor sustainer + Wah pedal + Delay.....but if u're an effects guy, throw in some chorus and flanger.....basically its up to u....gotta go around n try some stuff before deciding....

i tink tats for the TONE guys
after playing for sometime, wen u get great sounding guitars
u start to appreciate TONE

den u wud wan less gain...
too much gain and u cant get to hear tone

ya tats the classic pedals
wah > ds1 > ts808 > eq > chorus > phaser > delay

no need noise suppresor, compressor sustainer haha

1 question here. How is DS1 more popular than DS2 when DS2 has DS1 basic tone + another turbo mode?

Yup... MFX is really convenient and provides a decent enough sound for high gain playing...

I'm using a Micro Metal Muff for all Metallica/Megadeth stuffs.

it can capture the tone of the pre-Black album days pretty damn accurately, provided you have a 'metal' enough guitar.

for more modern metal, the high gain models on my Vox AD30VT seems to be able to cut it, although slightly lacking in gain.

but yeah. for '80's thrash metal and everything along that line, I daresay you can't go wrong with the Metal Muff smile.gif

Yup... It is really helpful for shaping your tone...
It's just like the Graphic EQ on the Mark series amp...

The preamp goes into the graphic eq and acts as the final tone-shaping tool before your sound "goes out"...

Yup...

I haven't touch the EQ settings for quite some time...

But IIRC, you'll need to choose which frequency to boost with one knob and how much to boost/cut with another knob... At the end of the day, it is the graphic eq on the mesas, just in numbers... I normally boost my lows and highs, and cut a little of the mids... But my main sound from the amp modeler is still middy... I like the mids to be eq-ed this way...

I've uploaded two patches... One using the Cali Crunch (Mesa MkIIC+) and the other using the treadplate (Mesa Dual Recto)...

They are distinctly different though...
The Mark cuts through really well, generally more middy sounding... I've used this patch for all my clips, and use this as my main sound on stage too...
The Recto has a more scooped sound, great for Metallica... Sounds much more saturated to me...

hmm.....i use the diamondplate (triple rect) and bomber uber (bogner uberschall) for my rhythms and heavy stuff respectively and i use the diezel lead (which is awesome, really cuts thru the mid and my notes are quite clear) for my solos with all of them running thru the tube screamer....for my clean i use the double reverb which i love so much.....

yeah the diezel is pretty sweet....i find that its alot more convenient to setup ur gear by using gear box...the one thing i wish that the XT Live must have is the dual tone capability....being a Mark Tremonti fan, he mixes two different amps for his rhythm stuff which produces his signature tone...and my cousin has the X3 Live which is capable of doing that which i am quite jealous heheheh....but i hear X3 Live has a lot of problems....

not much of an effects guy...i just use some delay, phaser and wah with some reverb...thats all....hahaha...but yeah, im quite happy with my XTL.....cant wait to try it out live tomorrow....

btw, do u run ur XTL thru the fx return behind the amp or do u go direct into the PA or wat? and do u know how to use the tone correction function?
