u should not put the cold to the maximum coz it will make the compressor frost. u should put abt 80% oni in the meter for coldness. i think u hav been cheated by the person who asked u to change the switch fan n sensors. ur car is alrite bt u didnt realize it. when the compressor is frost, it will oni hav like white smoke comin out bt wil b cold n very less. so put it abt abit higher than half of the cold, let it start n stop automatically. then evrytin should b fine.

Yes, ice forming on the evaporator coil will block the airflow, u probably need to adjust the thermostat to a higher temperature, or even open the windows a bit to let in warm air to defrost it faster.

Adding another extra fan in front of condensor made sense?

If you condenser's fan is in fairly good condition,
you don't need to add another one in front of it.

Will only put more load on the alternator. One fan
is about 80 watts = 80/12 = 7 amps.

The aircon shop usually have used fans, including the
mounting. I changed mine in my former car (an old
Toyota Corolla KE70) for $60 or $70. My aircon man,
Ah Tee, said it was actually a Wira condenser fan.
He even tried to change to another better blade for me,
but it couldn't fit. I remember I when I sold the car a few
months ago, that fan had been going strong for 3 or 4 years.

One should not turn turn down thermostat too cold.

Firstly, frost will form up on the evaporator's pipings,
as the others say.

Secondly, the compressor will be running most of
the time, and thus will shorten its lifepan.

Thirdly, if the compressor is a heavy one, your fuel
comsumption will be high.

Try not to turn your thermostat past half (about 3 o'clock
on your knob) during the daytime. At night, try to set it
to the warmest, about 12 to 1 o'clock.

As for gas, if your compressor uses the older Freon R12,
I think it costs about $30 now. If you need to change the
receiver-drier (or filter) when servicing, that is another
$30 or $40. Plus service charges, it will come to about
$70 to $80.

If your system is using the new R134 (ozone friendly) gas,
I heard that may cost about $80 to refill.

You can take it to my usual aircon man's shop in
Kepong, if you like. He's Ah Tee, 012-303 9547.

Chee Wah Auto Air Con,
996 Jalan 1/32,
6th Mile Jalan Kepong, KL.
Tel : 6250 5711.

It's right at the left turning, just after Maybank, and
followed by three clinics - Polyclinic Liew, Klinik Jinjang,
and Klinik Tan. The last half shop just before the left turn
is a small organic food shop, beside Klink Tan.

His charges are reasonable, but be aware he can be
quite busy at times.

That is more likely due to insufficient gas, or the
compressor is getting old (pistons and seals worn, etc.).

Both will cause insufficient compression at idle speed,
and thus inadequate cooling, and becoming better and
colder at speed, since the compressor will be spinning
faster.

At five years, I think it is more likely due to the former,
since your compressor is probably still in fair condition.

At normal usage, some gas will leak from the system
over time, so that is why we need to refill from time
to time.

Sometimes your system, such as the compressor
inlet/outlet, pipings and evaporator inlet/outlet
may also leak, so you will lose gas sooner.

Any competent aircon man should be able to check
for that.
