Are you coming to melb to study?  If so, I'm pretty sure your uni website will have some sort of housing site sorta thing.. where you can check for rooms for rent near your uni etc...
*
Yep if everything goes well, I'll be studying at RMIT Bourke St. this coming July. Uni housing is too expensive for me so that's a no go I'm afraid. My budget's only about $150-180 at most per week.

well, its either you apply now or get freezed outside.
dont assume like msian, that someone will take care of your accomodation. Rental in city is not cheap.
*
You're under the mistaken assumption that I've not done my research and that I "assume like msian" - I know that renting in the city's not cheap, which is why I'm looking at surrounding suburbs like Carlton. I was told by a friend who stays there that $150-180/pw is possible.

You have to be patient and look for your place.

It's not like you can get a place in the first time you look.
*
This is not the first time I'm looking, I was just stating that the website that was linked by KVReninem didn't have any vacancies left.

QUOTE(Amoureuse @ May 31 2009, 06:15 PM)
Nooo, I think you misunderstood me. I didn't mean uni housing.. or maybe I'm misunderstanding you :P

What I mean is.. like at my uni, we have a site that let's other people post up rooms for rent and crap... lemme just show you in a screenshot :P

Yes yes, does this help clarify what I'm trying to get at?
*
Ahh I thought you were talking about housing provided by universities, which are generally much more expensive, partly because they have mandatory meal plans.

I don't think my uni has such a thing though. And yeah, the screenshot does clarify what you were telling me about. :P

Yes yes, ofc you do.. but then again you have to that with everything do you not?

I just figured it'd be easier for him (?) to use, to try and find accommodation.
*
Thanks for the links! (and yeah I'm a 'him' unlike many users on this site who may pretend to be otherwise.) I checked the .pdf that my uni has and apart from its own housing database which I'm unable to access at the moment as I'm not there yet, I've also already looked at other sites like realestate, domain, and share-accom before.

I most probably will be sharing with another Malaysian dude too who'd be studying in the same uni. Might either rent a room together or look for shared housing - but can't say much since I'm not there yet.

I need to ask you guys for an opinion - would you guys pay $185/week for a student hostel in the CBD which includes gas/electric/water bills which is a stone's throw away from your uni, or would you opt for cheaper alternatives at the surrounding suburbs (Carlton, Fitzroy, etc) by sharing a flat/house with other people (whether it includes bills or not, I'm not too sure)?

A friend of mine who has studied in Melbourne in the past told me this, and I quote, "Staying with others in an apartment is an experience in itself and it's fun, where else a student hostel has a different feel." Do you guys reckon the same thing too? This is what's stopping me from booking that place right away 'cause I'm inclined to agree what my friend had said, but I thought I'd ask for a second opinion here.

You only have to declare amounts above $10,000.  Even then, it won't be beyond a few questions if they see a student visa and a newcomer.

Otherwise, there is no way they'll know how much cash you are carrying into the country.  And truth be told, $3,000 is a small amount wink.gif
Does the declare-above-$10,000 rule apply if I bring in a combination of bank drafts and cash? Just curious.

I'm interested in a room (or maybe my friend is if the apartment I'm eyeing on goes through) - how much is it exactly?

QUOTE(siew14 @ Jul 6 2009, 11:10 PM)
do we really need to take some vaccine injection or smething to increase our body immune system against H1N1??
*
You can take the normal flu jab but it won't make you immune against H1N1.

Hey guys,

I'm currently on Optus' Postpaid and signed a 1 year contract 'cause I was initially supposed to finish off my final year. I just found out from my parents that back home there are some financial and family difficulties and I may need to leave after 1 semester here at the end of this year. I've called Optus and they told me that I'm looking at $350 to cancel.. which is just way too much. Do you guys have any ideas what I can do to resolve this?

sad to hear that..
by the way now is what month for your contract?
i think pay the cancellation fee is the only way
*
I'm just on my 3rd day here, so yeah technically first month. My mistake was rushing into this.. but then again I didn't predict that I wouldn't be able to finish my semesters here.

QUOTE(mrRighthand @ Jul 8 2009, 11:12 AM)
there is pretty much nothing you can do.
it is a contract.
i suggest you find a friend that are willing to take over the remaining months of the contract
*
That's actually an idea.. gotta look for someone I guess. But since I'm on direct debit, won't it continuously debit from my bank account (which I'd be closing when I leave Australia), and not my friend's?

iphone plan? hmm.gif
*
No, not iphone. I don't even need an extra phone I don't need - I just wanted a good plan.

QUOTE(mrRighthand @ Jul 8 2009, 03:10 PM)
just transfer the account to your friend. the account will be under his name and change the billing account to his if he decide to pay using direct debit.
if he want to keep his current number, just request for his current number to be ported into the account and erase the old one. it would take a few days and no fees charged. This is according to 3 mobile sales person i talked to. i think it'll be the same with optus, telstra etc.
*
Ah didn't know that - then I'll try asking around when the time comes lol.

QUOTE(hihihehe @ Jul 8 2009, 04:19 PM)
but i think there got a policy that you can cancel the plan without any cost within 1 week you sign the contract..but you need find a "nice" excuse to cancel it..

i got 1 friend using 3 for 3-4 days and his area hard to get the coverage so he call up 3 and cancel it without any cost..
*
QUOTE(mrRighthand @ Jul 8 2009, 04:39 PM)
ya its called cooldown period. so saigo you can try return the phone and cancel the contract. i'm not encouraging you to lie but ya, desperate times calls for desperate measures.
i'm not sure on this but mayb you can return the phone by just saying you dont like the phone. thats why its called a cooldown period.
*
yeah I think I'll drop by tomorrow at the dealer and tell them exactly that.. this is indeed a desperate time for me indeed lol. The dealer knows I don't need an extra phone, I just took the phone since it's free so I guess I'll try the poor coverage excuse.

hmm
i stay inside city along swanston st..and inside my apartment, 3 coverage was very poor..i mean i always get 1 bar using 3..same goes to 3 wireless broadband..
same goes to my friend at lygon st which is college square..he cancel it and using optus which is full bar..
*
Ironically from where I'm staying currently (I just moved in) at Walsh St, I have quite poor coverage for 3G. Guess I'll lodge a complaint soon.
