This poll shows that statistics of Nokia 5800 defect vs non-defect. Few of the forumers here has email-ed Nokia & they have visited this particular poll. Please cast your vote especially if your Nokia 5800 is not working up to expectation, so that Nokia will take this problem seriously (for future products, they must conduct a thorough test before releasing to the market).

Also, please state what is the color of your 5800 set, as some findings reveal(hypothetically) that blue color is more prone towards this problem (need more facts) Phone with light leakage problem might face earpiece problem as well.

Update : 5th January 2008

Some forumers has sent in their sets to Nokia Care Center/some called the Nokia CS, below are some of the reasons/excuses given by Nokia staff :-
1. This set is not launched yet, therefore they don't recognise this phone for repair nor warranty (Nokia CS)
2. This is a new set, we do not have any tools to repair, must send to Nokia HQ or Amcorp mall AVAXX (Sunway Pyramid NCC)
3. Send to the shop or avax in Amcorp mall to repair (Nokia CS)
4. It's normal to have this problem , we expect these problems to exist (NCC)
5. this phone has problems, but Avaxx can't wait to make profit that's why they rush to release this phone 2 week earlier than the official launch. (NCC)
6. some manage to get 1-1 replacement (Ipoh NCC)

Some forumers choose to DIY the solution (refer here), some sent to AVAXX amcorp mall or berjaya times square (zitron NCC) to repair. It takes 1-2 hours.

Update 8th January 2008

However, another phone call made to Nokia CS (this morning), escalated this issue to upper management, they will need to perform thorough investigation and come out with a proper remedy to this problem, as the current approach (avaxx or diy or etc) is not *official* solution (maybe just temporary solve this problem).

So please cast your votes here, while Nokia come out with a proper solution to fix this problem.

Need to find out the statistics of nokia 5800 defect, see can send to nokia malaysia or not. if we don't make them identify this issue, the new 5800 sets will also face the same problem.

yah it's actually a manufacturing defect, not volume adjustment problem. firmware cannot solve. must send in shop to repair.

I got the call volume problem as well, phone is 4 days old. Just noticed it today. Did a bit of research, seems it's hardware issue.

Sucks, but on the other hand kinda glad I'm not alone.

Think I will bring it to Nokia service center this weekend. Which one I should go to? Anyone got good service experience?

It appears that everyone is having the same issue.

The best thing would be to bring it back to an authorized Nokia Service Centre. smile.gif There's one in Amcorp Mall IIANM.

you know what...I think the AP sets are cheap cause they are faulty...or something must be wrong with them...I mean think about it...why would it be cheap?think about the import costs, the original cost...reminds me of THE REJECT SHOP or F.O.S =p

mine is a blue tube, everything seems to work fine, except the battery, when fully charged, seems to last only 8 hours. is that normal? i use gps + wifi + video calls + watch videos + listen to music.. if the battery cant take all these drain, they should put a big warning sign or alert on the box/pamphlet/website/manual then, since the phone wont work as advertised = as a mobile connected multimedia device..

Most battery operating time ratings are calculated within controlled conditions and minimal usage. It is industry accepted practice and they do have a clause that says battery operating time is highly dependent on mobile networks connected and your usages. A heavy user will naturally deplete the battery faster than a light user. Connecting to 3G networks will deplete your battery faster than on conventional networks like GSM/Edge. Also our mobile networks require the phone to respond every minute compared to foreign countries' where they have more network towers and does not require our phones to keep searching when we travel from one cell coverage to the other. Near-far phenomenon will also affect battery performance. When you're further away from a mobile tower, you phone is required to transmit in higher power than when you're near a mobile tower. A lot of things count.

Unfortunately, using GPS, WIFI and video calls are prime battery eaters. They use a lot of power. The phone is a multimedia device as it has all the features to cater for that. But it doesn't mean it is a LONG LASTING multimedia device or a GOOD multimedia device (depending on how you define GOOD). Read the fine prints, bro. wink.gif

Item 3 seems to only happen if you don't have enough signal strength or weak signal from radio.

Did anybody buy the phone after the official release. Any problems with the phone even after it's official launch on Friday? I want to change my phone soon but I want to avoid all the hassle when I buy this one. Even if there's a second batch, any news from Nokia when it'll be out?

Bought yesterday. IMMEDIATELY reaching home noted earpiece problem.. now got 1 line of DEAD PIXEL at top left sad.gif BTW: red avaxx unit..

Not to mention no iSilo or acrobat reader... didnt change phone for 2 years as thought none was worthy of kicking my k800i and Palm Tx combo...

Also my first Nokia... have been a SE man for as long as I used phone (started from Ericsson!)

Now must go visit Amcorp...

lol every service centre has different technician on duty laugh.gif

the best is, check everything once they returning you the phone. if you spot any dust or unhappy about anything, tell them, they can do it again on the spot for you.

Totally up to you. Waiting for prices to drop means you don't enjoy using the Tube NOW. I think Tubians will agree with me when I say...why wait?

Yup!
You are ABSOLUTELY right. Don't buy this phone.
Too many MAJOR problems.

Priced at RM1300? Can this be true?
Don't waste your money on such a CHEAP phone.
CHEAP phone is for sure not a QUALITY stuff.

if one can wait, he should wait.

why get sthg now and take the (a good) chance of a faulty one. unless the solution is permanent, noob-proof DIY, n involves sthg extremely easy , most ppl still feel inconfident about remedying it. all the good things come to those who waits. ofc if one's impulse is the dominant one then, by all means.

im not campaigning agst this phone as i follow up this model with much interest (though already own other). but i do think it's sensible for ppl to be wary until the apparently 'hardware bugs' have been primarily ironed out before gettin their feet wet though i know it's fun 'being in the water'

its worthy to quote this again

QUOTE(Visionew @ Jan 6 2009, 04:34 PM)
Don't get be wrong. I am not campagning against XM 5800. RM1350 is still a fairly good price for all its good features, even if one use it as a PDA-cum-Bluetooth earpiece phone. But psycologically, when the problem hits you, when it fails your expectation, RM1350 will suddenly seem pricey.

yeah, ear piece problem is common to this model,
a disappointment indeed for a music phone..

the screen going blank when receive n making calls is not a problem though..
it is due to a sensor that make sure u didn't touch anything when receiving n making a call.
for instance when ppl call u, u don't wan to suddenly touch the cancel call or sumthing when u put ur ears on the screen

its a problem, because before that its work fine, how can i know who's calling when the screen goes blank. i had to ask who's calling if i hear them of course...isometime it work fine...it should be lock if we put it on our ear...but it straight away goes blank when making/receive call, i not even touch anything...i notice those thing happen when u press the phone to your ear a bit harder...i think those sensor and speaker in that area were kind of sensitive to pressure thou...

forgot to add..

do u happen to use a SP?
if u do then mybe the SP covers the sensor before u can even put ur ears on.
if not, then mybe sumthing else covering it that makes the sensor believes ur ears were on the phone n disable the screen.

if none of the above, i guess u better ask in the specific phone discussion under Nokia XpressMusic 5800 "TUBE" V4 coz more xperts there or sent ur tube to nearest NCC

Proximity sensors usually work by emitting infrared(or some other electromagnetic/static radiation or field). Whenever an object bounces back the wave, it calculates the time between emission and the time it comes back so it can calculate how far the object is.

You SP might be bouncing this beam as soon as it is emitted, if you use an SP.

call today and they say got to change the LCD and still waiting for part...sigh... sad.gif, i think the LCD were fine coz the picture and all were ok, those blank screen usually related to the light sensor as far as i concern, don't know what else gonna happen to my tube and how long it will take to get it back...

the phone feature are good thou for me...it worth for the price if its got no problems...for those who wanna buy the phone better wait a lil bit until nokia overcome all the problems...

my 2 weeks red tube seems fine... *amen*

but i didnt get it from nokia center, even thou its a Zitron set.

Battery seems fairly lasting, but probably cause its still new. Lasted me an average of 2 days with quite a number of medium length talk time (10-20 minutes each... i'm a sales person) with a couple hours of songs on speakers...

this phone reminds me of my motorola ming A1200 long time ago. had to spent quite a while to get use to everything...

still feels a little sluggish thou... oh well rolleyes.gif

The promoter at nokia store said the earpiece problem occurs because the user use screen protector on the touch screen which cause the sensor to be less sensitive. Is that true?

what logic is this? unless he's talking about the proximity sensor being affected by the screen protector i might believe.

Anyways...i think this really depends on luck, i changed my earpiece and now is free from the problem. (1 week+ already after fixed) . But my friend on the other hand, who bought the it on the same day as mine, (he got blue i got red) sent the earpiece to fix...3 days later kenak again. whistling.gif

As they say red avaxx having problem, but mine blue zitron also having prob... so the conclusion is

CHECK ALL THE MODELS NO MATTER DIST OR COLOUR FOR:

1) Earpiece (not the stupid hands free) THE ONE U PUT AT UR EAR TO ANS CALL (to see whether when u make or receive a call the volume increases and decreases

2) Whether the bluetooth is working...try sending and receiving files with it

3) Check whether the WIFI is working

and also do check for the other functions also before you make the payment.

The earpiece is just under the casing. If you have the warranty sticker between both halves of the casing(which is HIGHLY unlikely), then your warranty will be void. But in this case, it shouldn't. But be careful, the plastic casing can be damaged easily when prying the phone open.

Yeah better not DIY. Unless if you happen to be a technician. biggrin.gif
However, if you do screw up(pins on the earpiece too bent/snapped, casing cracked, earpice fallen/stepped on, etc. etc.), you only have yourself to blame. Atleast if you send in to your NCC, it's free of charge for you even if they did screw up. laugh.gif

i bought my red 5800 last week.. i didnt encounter the earpiece problem for a few days until i read about it in a forum, and several days later it happened to me.. So i went to Nokia service center, they couldnt fixed it for another 2 weeks.. what phone am i supposed to use in the mean time? so i took back my phone and search for the solution online, and found a great video tutorial on fixing the earpiece, it took me less then 10 minutes to fix it and my earpiece is working well up until now.. then i got my firmware updated, it stops the phone from freeze and switching off automatically.. As for the battery, i thought my battery was defect, i charge the phone using my old nokia n82 charger and the battery didnt last for more than 6 hours after an onernight charge.. then i tried charging using the charger in the box, the battery lasted longer.. i used my phone heavily (emails, music video, musics, wifi, camera) and my battery last for a day and a half before i had to juice up again.. hope this will clear up some issues..

Anyone using myPhone ? How to connect to the Net meh. Need to register before can use. If not can only use trial ver. Dem dun wanna waste RM50 for no reason.

btw other than that, think there's no prob at all. Maybe because it's RED all the way~

Added on January 25, 2009, 12:02 amoh yeah another one. does the handphone does not charge from usb when used as modem? I used mine as modem one nite to download some stuff but after wake up, seems the modem just shutdown. not only that, everytime i use it as my 3g modem, it will got DC after a while for no reason, while I have no problem when using the HuaWei one. weird~

Some users have it in a few days. So yeah I'll wait it out 2 weeks more, see if anything turns up.
Anyways I am all the time being extra careful. I even put it down slowly. tongue.gif
Plus I haven't installed any apps which avoids the phone from being corrupt in anyway, hang here and there..

hey, if u guys face the problem 2nd time.. u call up Nokia CS and start shouting. or, go to Nokia Care and bring along the work order form that u got during ur 1st repair and demand for a replacement earpiece. I did that, and they replaced a totally new earpiece (instead of fixing the earpiece there) it took less than 1 hour to replace the new unit. Give it a try biggrin.gif Now my phone no more problem , start to feel worth dy =P

What if I have more than 1 problem stated up in the poll??? and can't seem to vote more than one.

1) Earpiece problem (Diy solved)
2) Battery problem ( Shake it and it goes shut off. Stuff a paper beside battery to prevent battery from moving. Seems to work)
3) Light leakage. (Yup. Got this problem. How to solve?)
4) Other problems - Automatically close message when I'm typing, encountered few times
- laggy when typing chinese
- some misbehaved.
- some laggyness sometimes
- auto shutdown of application such as opera eventhough just one application is opened at that time

Mine a Zitron original set. Blue colour.

Did the hard reset but doesn't solve any issue.

Me, my sis and bro also using this phone...

Problem (2) - Can send in for warranty.
Problem (3) - Nothing can be done, it is assembled in that way, sadly.
Problem (4) - Looks like firmware problem. Wait for the next new firmware.

Has the earpiece problem solved? I'm planning on getting this phone but after reading this thread and all the problems faces by other forumers, I'm beginning to have doubts on this phone though I'd been waiting for it for a long time.

Only prob was my GPS receiver burnt after 3 hours of TV out, but Nokia replaced it in less than 24 hours (Zitron set)

Added on April 19, 2009, 10:31 pmmaybe ear piece prob was a firmware prob/ Mine`s 20.0.012, all`s fine
