I am thinking to buy a particular 32" LCD TV (HD Ready, not Full HD).

This particular LCD TV can support up to 1080i, but not 1080p.

But I am aware that other brands of 32" LCD TV (HD Ready, not Full HD) can support
up to 1080p and also 1080i.

Now, my questions are:
(1) Should I buy a 32" LCD TV (HD Ready, not Full HD) which can support
1080p rather than only can support 1080i?

(2) Since some 32" LCD TV (HD Ready, not Full HD) can support 1080p, then what is
the difference in picture quality if comparing to LCD TV with Full HD that can support 1080p?
-- I mean when use DVD player with HDMI.

HD Ready - HDTV set capable of accepting HD signals (may not be able to display at full resolution 1920x1080)
Full HD - HDTV set capable of accepting HD signals and able to display full resolution at 1920x1080
720p HDTV - another name for HD Ready HDTV
1080p HDTV - another name for Full HD HDTV

Most of the HDTVs today are able to support 720i/720p/1080i/1080p signals. So the single most important spec that we should be looking for when choosing a HDTV is the screen resolution (pixel resolution).

For HD Ready HDTVs which have screen resolution less than 1920x1080, they are less than ideal. This is because if you feed a 1080i/1080p signal to a HD Ready HDTV, this HDTV will scale down the signal resolution to fit its smaller screen resolution. That is to say, you will lose resolution if you use a HD Ready HDTV to display a 1080i/1080p signal.

For Full HD HDTVs, they have screen resolution of 1920x1080, thus, when a 1080i or 1080p signal is feed to it, it is able to display the picture in its full glory at 1920x1080 with no resolution loss.

So it is not difficult to conclude that if money is not a problem, always go for Full HD 1080p HDTVs with 1920x1080 resolution instead of HD Ready 720p HDTVs which has lesser resolution.

shahreza2000 mentioned really good points but at the same time we also need to consider that unless the tv is mainly for blu ray movies, its hard to find anything else that can fully utilise Full HD resolution. Most games are still 720p and our wonderful TV channels and Astro are still in primitive resolutions (480i max) so i guess we hafta take this into consideration also la i guess

Get a Full HD if can. You won't regret.

32" 1080p full HD is just a gimmick IMO, you won't feel much difference comparing 720p and 1080p on a 32".

to truly appreciate the glories of 1080p, you'll need at least 40" preferably to see the difference. For for a 32"? 720p is good enough

but of cos, your viewing distance from the TV need to take into consideration as well.


My advice is don't go for those 32" full HD LCD TVs

If you want 1080p, get at least 40"
if you want 32", normal HD ready 720p LCD TVs is good enough.

Last time I was contemplated to get either Samsung 32" full HD or the HD ready one. Then, the bro at SenQ said, no use getting full HD for 32" coz you can't really see the difference.

Heck, for me, 720p is good enough already lah.

Yes, I do not want to spend extra money on unnecessary extra feature.
I want to buy a 32" LCD TV for practical use.

In order to get a better picture quality, is 100Hz necessary for watching Astro, TV channels,
and DVD movies on 32" LCD TV?

for practical use, those RM1799 - RM1999 range of branded HD Ready 32" is good enuf already

no point getting a 1080p if you are using it mainly for Asstro and DVDs watching only.

but avoid those cheap china brands like Haier, Gc & etc...
even they claim it's HD ready, but the pic quality is enough to make u vomit blood


a word of advice tho... Asstro and TV channels will look worse on LCD TVs.

Astro looks hell alot worse on a 1080p TV than on a 720p TV. Even on a plasma, the quality of some Astro channels are just horrible on 1080p. Don't bring projectors into the discussion here though, they're in a different league.

Resolution isn't everything. A good LCD with good colour contrast and picture quality is more important.

I compare movies played on my 1680 x 1050 LCD monitor to my Sharp Aquos TV (as 2nd clone display), which is only 1360 x768....The Sharp owns the BENQ Monitor even with lower resolution when i watched downloaded TVB HD dramas and HD movies....the colour range and detail is so much better and there's no sign of blockiness and jaggies.

So don't get a cheap brand LCD TV with higher res...get a better quality LCD TV with superior image quality, even if it means lower res. (Of course if got budget, get the superior image quality + resolution lor!)

It depends on how you wanted to use plan LCD 32" TV.

I agree greyshadow statement, if it mainly use for watching movies or TV programs (Astro), 720p/1080i versus 1080p makes very little difference especially when watching from about at least 3m away.
Btw, watching Astro looks really bad on whether you have 720p/1080i or 1080p because Astro PQ is only worthy of a regular 480i quality.

But, it doesn't mean FULL HD doesn't have its use. For gamers (since we are in Console Couch section),
1080p TV with fast response time makes a LOT of difference.. oh yeah!

I've compare both the Samsung 720p and 1080p and even brought my PS3 to the store for testing.
While playing MGS4 to see the fast action scene.. 1080p FULL HD for gaming rocks! Hence, I choose the latter.
If money is no object, you can also choose the 120hz model with FullHD capability.

For gaming, you do want a fast response time (6ms or lower) with very high contrast and deep black levels TV.

Also, if you want to double that as PC monitor... your FullHD (1080p) LCD TV is capable of displaying
a much higher resolution than just a standard 720p.

Just take your laptop to the store and connect to the back to of 720p and 1080p LCD TV PC inputs to check out the difference.

Stay away from those generic cheap brands TV... some of them really bad for gaming and probably good for regular TV watching only.

No mood at all if seing an Astro at LCD..

If I just want to watch Astro for most of the time, and sometimes watching DVD movies and normal TV channels,
and no gaming at all, then should I continue using my 29" CRT TV? or buy a Plasma TV?

I heard the picture quality from Plasma TV will look okay on Astro, normal TV programs, and DVD movies,
is this correct?

Do you guys think CRT TV or Plasma TV are more suitable for me?
Since I do not want to get a bad picture quality from LCD TV when watching Astro..

Get a scaler to do the job for you, but they ain't cheap

Dudes, posted in the "best 32" for next gen consoles" thread but no reply. Gonna get my tv tomorrow so any help would be highly appreciated. I went the the stores yesterday and now really sakit kepala max. First I start off wanting Sony Bravia V series. Then got poison by salesman to go for Sharp Aquos. Then suddenly I saw this smoking LCD from LG which looks phenomenal and a steal with full HD with 4ms response time cost RM2799 called 32LG80FR. Looks sexy too and apparently darn good speakers. Since I don't wanna spend on another sound system it be a good idea I thought.

Until BAM! This other salesman put me side by side and showed these two moving pictures with one side Full HD but only 50Hz refresh rate, the other 100Hz with HD ready only. And guess what? The higher refresh rate had a much better resolution without ghosting. I am using the TV for movies and PS3. So.....now he recommend me back the Sharp Aquos which is not full HD but higher refresh rate of 100Hz.

Dilemma: go for Sharp Aquos 53M or LG80FR? Or some other brand? I feel like all my survey these past months gone down the drain la. Any help is highly highly appreciated! Thanks guys!!!

but check the resolution than you know why....

aslong the spec says 1920X1080... your good to go!!!
