Hi,

Just wondering, is it possible to use a US-version Wii Console in Malaysia? If I used it with a power converter from 110V to 220-240 V?

Bought one one day and it's great. smile.gif Will be heading back to Malaysia in another couple of days.

Hmm...also, how do you guys shop on the Wii channel if you don't have a US Credit Card? Where do you buy the Wii points for it?

You can use the step down converter.
As for the wii point:
1)I usually bought from ebay and request the seller to email me the code.
2)You can also change the wii setting to brazil and use the credit card to buy the point.

Im doing that right now tongue.gif (Wii is from US, buy from eBay).
And so is most people in this forum.
Also, NTSC/UC Wii is the officially designated Wii for South East Asia including Malaysia.

Yes, you can use a US console in Malaysia. You just have to do two things:
1: Make sure your TV is Mult-System or have NTSC support (not a problem, 90% of TVs sold in Malaysia nowadays are World-Multi, unless you live with a grandfather who stubbornly refusing to change that National or ITT TV from 1981 because "it still works"), and
2: Make sure your stepdown support the US NEMA keyed plug. If not, you can just buy a replacement power brick or do what I did because my stepdown only has Europlug connector and I got pissed off when I found out that the replacement power brick I buy cannot supply enough power to the Wii to run in 480p mode: Buy a NEMA to Europlug converter- in Malaysia you can only get adapters that are not keyed, and then mod it to support keyed plugs by literally banging the Wii's brick's plug into the converter (handiwork with screwdrivers required to clean up the chippings inside the converter when done), then finally plugging the converter into the stepdown.

As for points, just set your country to Brazil, buy, enter your postcode, then set back. I tried before, it works and I can actually take the point "back to North America".

Thanks Guys. smile.gif

I actually bought the Wii from Amazon.com. Xmas marketing gimmick of having only 1 hr to decide if I wanted to buy it or not. >.>

Yeah, took a shortcut from reading the FAQ but it was also only a very small and brief mention about the power box. Ouch.

Ramchyld, what do you mean US NEMA Keyed plug? U mean that the stepdown converter has to have one of the sockets for it, is it? Hmm...maybe post up a picture? Easier for me to visualize it.

Notice how one side of the plug is slightly wider than the other. Problem is, most of the head converter and stepdown sold in Malaysia that I've seen not designed to fit this kind of plug (ok, maybe because I've not seen all stepdown transformers in my life). But my stepdown transformer is "unique" because it uses Europlug (two round pin) socket:

So I have to employ one of these:

But the problem is they're not designed to take those keyed connectors (I've never seen one on sale that is). So I had to literally mod one so the Wii's Brick plug can fit. You may experience a similar problem with other stepdown transformers bought locally. If that's the case either just get the necessary connectors and mod, or if you're feeling lucky get a power brick locally. But test to make sure it can provide enough power to support 480p mode- I rugi RM50 because I bought one that cannot.

Yes. You can use a US Wii in Malaysia, make sure you use a Power Converter, if possible add a Electricity Stabilizer (Optional) to protect your Wii from power surge. Tenaga National is pretty sucks at maintaining a stable power supply.

If you don't have a US credit card, you can use a Malaysia Credit Card by doing the "Brazil Hack". This is simple, simply change your Country Setting to Brazil, and you are ready to go. Please note that only MasterCard and Visa cards are accepted, no Diner's Club, American Express or etc.

Hi myremi!

welcome to the club! thumbup.gif

anyway, you can either get a step down convertor, or if you happen to drop by in KL, go visit Jusco, MV. There's an Official Nintendo Kiosk there, where you can get an official 220v power adapter.

Have fun! icon_rolleyes.gif

Oh no, Don't use the official 220v Adapter on your US Wii,
it will fry your US Wii.
always use the 110v Adapter that come with your US Wii + a Step DOWN power converter.

Dun understand how it can fry. Can elaborate? UK Wii take more amp/volt than US Wii?

My experience with 220v adapter on US Wii is that it causes the console to ape out when in 480p mode, and even that it's an imitation adapter. I thought the Wiis distributed here are also US Wii repackaged with 220v adapter?

Ram : Thanks. So it's the socket adapter that needs to be bought then. Shouldn't be a problem. I just need to look out for one that looks like the one I'm currently using when I go travelling outside of Malaysia. http://www.target.com/Embark-All-in-1-Adap...20travel&page=1

Hopefully shouldn't be a problem.

Just go to any hardware store in KL (or wherever you are) and buy a step down convertor from there. Will set you back around RM40-60. Had no problems with mine. You can find ones that fit US plugs as well, no need to go modding or buying adapters like RAMChYLD did.

In the end, I bought a stepup converter in the US. I got one of those travel step down adaptors as they are small and portable. So hopefully it'll work when I head back. Here's hoping. smile.gif

Thanks guys.

Eheh, what you mean by step-up? 110v -> 220v? You don't want one of those (in fact, using them is a bad idea, double explosion). You want a stepdown transformer (220v -> 110v), particularly one that can take keyed US plugs.

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-er-77-...er-70-1pnk.html

Something like that. That one say can support Wii, but the socket doesn't look like it can take keyed plugs. It is also out of stock.

(ps, sorry for inactivity, kena measles tongue.gif ).

Ah thanks. I'm back in Kuching now but got nasty cold bug and sorethroat.

I didn't use the one I bought from the US because it wasn't quite correct one. It's for 50 Watt devices and the Wii was 52 Watt. heh! Oh well. Planning to head out to an electronic shop nearby and get one of those step down converters.

Wah! Measles! So old and still kena. Hee hee! Anyway, hope u get better. Ciao!

NTSC/US is the official region assigned to Malaysia so it isn't hard to buy US version games. You can try http://www.play-asia.com/, or through local sellers like Kyoyagami.
