LX3 really amazing...

somehow i prefer the mall photo if can shoot the photo with longer delay/aperture(whatever u call it) it would make the photo nicer. It looks normal a usually point and shoot in this photo.

Wow.....I think these are some of the best B&W shots I've seen.
Though some shots would've benefited a bit more with a lower angled compo (e.g Img #10).

The B&W is PP with Gimp. I increased the contrast and change the curve to S shape

The hands belongs to a couple. The guy proposed to his gf on the day we went Pulau Ketam. That photo is after he proposed.

Thanks for the complement.

All the B&W photos are shot during raining day. My whole day trip to Pulau Ketam is wet. Camera got wet so many times. So worry water will go into the camera. Lucky didn't.

I opted for the lower compo to get more of the buildings' reflections into the shot laugh.gif

Though ur compo is a good idea also to get more of the colorful sky into the shot icon_rolleyes.gif

Manual.
But be careful.
Something I learned when shooting in Disneyland was that fireworks are generally quite bright.
So even though I used ISO-80 for the shots, they came out quite over-exposed especially if u used any shutter speed over 2 secs.

I don't quite get what u mean by "do the sky dark dark"....
The night sky memang dark one mah.... sweat.gif
hahaha....

hi there people,

the first six photographs were taken on pangkor island, while the last two were taken on a rainy night in ipoh.
all eight images were resized, but otherwise, they are unedited. to see the full exif for each image, you might want to download them for now,
until i figure how to embed them into a post. cheers!

Oic.....
#7 is a HDR shot.
I took 5 different exposures of the shot and combined them in Photomatix.
Then it all comes down to how u tweak the shot in Photomatix and PP.
Play around and u will get different styles of HDR.

Your shots remind me of Cinque Terre, Italy.....the seaside had clouds that looked almost like what u have captured here.
Great stuff wink.gif

Shot #1 & #6 is a bit badly composed though....
Shot #1 no subject matter.....Shot #6 has too many over-lapping sillhouttes and is under-exposed.

Your B&W shots managed to captured the rainy feel though, which I myself tried but failed....kekekek...... tongue.gif

all eight images were resized, but otherwise, they are unedited. to see the full exif for each image, you might want to download them for now,
until i figure how to embed them into a post. cheers!

consider as nt bad if this is da 1st 6 photos u take with LX3...where u nt really familiar enough with da LX3..
way to go man..keep learning and keep shooting.. rclxms.gif rclxms.gif
i like ur photos #3 and #4..but da composition maybe can be improve a lil bit..
overall is nt bad..da colour is good and da photos is sharp enough..and have to pay more attention with da composition before u press da shutter..
da last 2 b&w no comment...but y u put so high ISO..or u purposely wana make it like so looks like an old photos??
anyways..nice job man..keep it roll..shooot more and share more.. tongue.gif tongue.gif

make me feel like going HK soooo much...again~
about da photo #4..if can include more of da ship with da red colour yatch will be better..juz feel it will be better like tat.. tongue.gif

Thanks zeeker87~!
Hong Kong was really a great place to visit laugh.gif

Ya, same feeling for #4.
I would've liked more of the "duk ling" ship in the shot too.
It was more in the shot in the original uncropped version, but I had a slanting horizon, so I had to rotate the shot and crop out the sides and the ship was part of the sacrifice....sigh.....
Maybe next year go back and take another one tongue.gif

thanks for the comments man.
unlike most people on this forum (i think), i actually enjoy capturing noisy/grainy images.
the last two were taken with the film grain scene mode. PCHo, you should check it out!
here's another one, but not as grainy. prolly not the kind of images that you guys dig, but i'll share it anyway.

Cannot see any "Grains" in ur shot wor.
And the compo would've been better if you walked like 10 steps forward.
You are too far away from the light source.
wink.gif

Will try out the film grain.
Mostly playing around with the film modes now.
dynamic, smooth, dynamic B&W (love this mode thumbup.gif ), etc.

Can you guys pls post more bokeh pics? I know you can't do bokeh on non-macro shots well with compacts, but I wanna see what's the limit of its powaa, i.e. the bokeh-ness on portrait/etc photography within a distance. Thx!

Seems like you have a lot of gadgets. Rich kid spotted. tongue.gif

But I think the bokeh-ness ain't that obvious. hmm.gif Can you yield some bokeh pics shooting non-macro objects (those within a distance, like 50cm-2m from your range)?

Had the chance to try something unusual during the weekend.
The street lights around my house were off, and there was a really clear sky with lots of stars.
So I took my LX3 out and tried out the "Starry Sky" scene mode.
The outcome amazed me quite a lot.

I like both your postings here.
1st one is really colorful and objective.
2nd is a great wide-angle.
Would be even better if u used the path-way in front to lead the viewers' eyes into the background.
Just my 2 cents wink.gif

Ritz-Carlton Millenia. I don't know how to make youtube encode my video in 720p ("high quality" still isn't 720p sad.gif)

Here's a screenshot showing the difference between the original video @ 50%, and the youtube video:

Thx for the comments. Most of the photos were directly out of camera. Even the size is remain 16:9 (lazy to crop blush.gif ) . But got few photos add more contrast & pin hole effect. The LX3 really done a excellent job.....even my dslr friends get poison rclxms.gif . You can check the setting on my flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/26547911@N05/

The LX3 can actually do it by itself.
You just need to set it to SCN, and select the "Pin Hole" mode to shoot photos with that kind of effects.
Cool huh>?

So they are not scared of humans basically.
And I think they were quite busy eating nectar at that time.

Angle it from top to bottom should give a better view of the flower.

Does using a smaller aperture help in giving some allowance so that more of the flower is focused?

Yea I guess so. It the real common type, the kind around the size of a 5 sen coin.

Juz wanna ask, does this look better than the previous one? Adjusted brightness and cropped. If didn't crop the background looks awfully bright.

In my opinion, the photo is a bit underexposed and the focus is a bit soft. It's better to cover the whole spider by using a smaller aperture.

Just my 2 cents. smile.gif

But #2 seems not really good....u PPed the sky izzit?

In my opinion, the photo is a bit underexposed and the focus is a bit soft. It's better to cover the whole spider by using a smaller aperture.

Just my 2 cents. smile.gif
*
Hrmm... That's the problem. I went wit the biggest aperture coz light was an issue. I was shooting at the kitchen. If I went any smaller I would have to bump up my shutter speed, and wit my shaky hands it would blur out any details. This was the only one that captured significant amount of details out of the 10 or so I took. And I still had to adjust brightness on computer.

I think I found the answer already... Bump up ISO?

Anyway keep them cents coming. I need them.

Hi all the sifus here, I like the picture above very much, can you share with me the settings to take bokeh pictures like that? I tend to have difficulties taking bokeh pics with LX3 unless i'm using macro mode with the lens really near to the subject. For the picture above, how close was the lens to the subject, and what mode are u using? Manual focus?

And if the subject is a bit big (for example the size of a cat), obviously you can't take your lens too close as you won't be able to fit the whole subject into the picture, is it still possible to take bokeh with LX3?

Many thanks! rclxm9.gif

From my beginner experience.

1. Distance between camera to object must be closer than background to object. Longer distance you can get better blur background
camera-----------object----------------------------------background.
(Short) (Long)

2. Use manual focus. Try to get sharper object you can get. Start from infinity focus and get closer.

3. Use Adobe Photoshop to get better and sharper object, crop to get picture more nice whistling.gif

Cleaned graveyard (Qing Ming). I did ask my family's permission to take pics so no worries :-)

Heard that the aperture on P&S like the LX3, even if it went as wide as F/2.0 it's still nowhere close to the F/2.0 of a normal DSLR. Like the blurring effect of a wide aperture. Is that true? Never handled one b4.

Thought that pics need a story (composition?). This dried weed is the foreground for the ceremony of a graveyard visitation. Lifelessness?

Yes. The F/2.0 of LX3 if compared to F/2.0 of DSLR lens, the DSLR is certainly brighter because of its larger aperture. Actually, F/2.0 isn't the aperture of the lens, it's the focal ratio of the lens.

Sorry for my limited optical knowledge. smile.gif

The blurring effect is caused due to the inability of the fast lens (low focal ratio) to keep everything in range to be in focus. In Astrophotography, fast lens is loved for its ability to get brighter image in shorter time but hated for its very demanding precise focus. Oops.. off-topic. smile.gif

nope...i don't use CPL...i shoot RAW and process in Lightroom...color graded accordingly...

1st grading - is adjust whites and blacks...i turned my photo into BW...played around the tone levels to get rich blacks and popping whites...
2nd grading - turn back the color on, i color correct the white balance...i adjust the temperature so that the clouds are white...
3rd grading - i played around the HSL focussing on the blues...for highlights, midtones and shadows...
4th grading - adjust the warm tones a bit for highlight...

lastly add the pinhole thing and sharpen the image a tiny bit...

Was in Taiwan laugh.gif

2ndly, I m not sifu la.... sweat.gif

3rdly, as Mr. LKM explained HDR = High Dynamic Range, B&W = Black & White.
These are very common terms, so do remember them ya wink.gif

4thly, I use photomatix for HDRs, CS4 for postprocessing.

Not totally jump ship la.
hahaha

Still think the LX3 is a very very good cam.
Sometimes I feel it does better than the 40D even. sweat.gif

After my Taiwan trip, I kinda can conclude:
1) The LX3 has better dynamic range
2) The LX3's LCD is way better than the 40D's
3) I love & miss the LX3's face priority mode

Thanks Mr.LKM.

I have few shots that followed the Rule of Third where the horizon is at the top 1/3 but since i feel the cloud was nice, so it was good to give more space to the sky.
And sometimes it was good to violate the Rule of Third.

And most of the time, my composition will have some subject at the right or left to attract viewer attention such as the boat.

The Grid display on the LCD really help u to compose and keep the horizon straight.

Too bad the aperture can't go lower than F/8 or else i can expose longer and the water will be smoother.

Yeah, that's the thing.

The first 2 photos, the scenes are quite dark actually. Even in so dark condition, with F8 and ISO80, u only able to expose up to 8sec, so F/8 is definitely not small enough.
Imagine u need to take waterfall photo on afternoon.

So ND is needed here, or can steal some tinted film from car tint shop tongue.gif

no problem, anyone can give their view, lol.

ya, the crane quite kacau there. but if i crop it off, the bridge will become quite short. lol.

ya, i should try to compose the boat alone but the main attraction of the scene is the bridge, haha.

thanks for ur comments.

Actually the first 2 photos, i edit with violet photo filter, originally it is quite blueish.

The 3rd photo is the original color.

Settings should be ISO80, F8, and exposure time around 6-8sec on tripod.

Quite hard to explain in words.

Well, the X-axis represent the brightness level, from left to right is from dark pixels to bright pixels while Y-axis represents how much pixels are found to be at that particular brightness.

When the graph touch the edge of the left hand side, means there are pure dark pixels in the photo, while touch the right hand side means there are highlights. Those pixels will not have any details, it is either pure white or pure black.

Generally, the ideal shape of the histogram is gaussian bell shape which means all pixels are properly exposed but that will be not the case if the image u want to take is too contrasty, means u have to sacrifice some part of ur photo to be shadows or highlights unless u are doing HDR in post processing.

So if u saw ur histogram lean towards right hand side, it means it is overexpose, while lean towards left hand side means underexpose.

Well, it is really up to u how u want ur photo to be, there is no right or wrong. U might want to let it more exposed or keep it to be like this.

If the histogram lean towards left hand side, it showed ur photo got more shadows but doesn't necessary mean ur photo is not right, it might be the scene too contrasty.

I took two photo here as examples.

First photo
user posted image

As u can see, the histogram at left hand side and there is no highlight clipping. The only possible shadows clipping is on the figurine eyes.
So this photo definitely can be improved in term of exposure.
In ur LX3, u may increase ur exposure to +1/3 or +2/3 and check ur histogram

Second photo
user posted image

In this photo, u can see most of the pixels clip at shadow, while few at mid range and few clip at highlights.
But does it mean underexpose? It might or might not depends on how u want to interprete it.

Since this is night scene, there will be backgrounds which are very dark, and the main focus here is the road and car light trails, so it is ok the histogram to be like this.
Of coz, u can expose this photo more to increase the background brightness, but if that the case, u might overexpose more on the car light trails there.

Is this one wallpaper-worthy?

The pics dun do the Enzo justice. Somehow I feel something is lacking in every pic... Any ideas? Any tips to taking car photos?

I cheated on most pics. Used iA mode on most coz the varying light color in the showroom made it impossible to do WB correctly in A mode everytime (sometimes turn out blueish, sometimes yellowish). And then on my way back i remembered one thing: AWB. LOL. Was on custom WB most of the time... Big mistake.

Some random shots (resize using picasa, but i think picasa tend to underexpose the photo and coz abit of wash out colors. Anyone having same problem with picasa or is it just my imagination?). Oh and anybody can tell me how to embed pictures from picasa web album?

Thanks for the comment. The pic i took inside the forest nearby Genting Awana resort, actually is banana tree leaf nod.gif .
If no mistake the setting is macro focus + manual exposure and did some adjustment on picasa software.

Then you would have to be very close to the subject right? Really impressive work man. You really should put up the snail on the wood for the LX competition man.

i'm new user of LX3..........how to shoot bokeh any special len filter needed..........i tried but not so bokeh one.

here the sample.............

Using lower f number
exposure = 1/100s
f-number = f/2.2 (i plan to put f/2 but come out this setting)
iso = 400
user posted image

Using higher f number
exposure = 1/6s
f-number = f/8
iso = 400

Lower f-number can create shallower depth of field image. So, F2.0 is better than F8.0 in creating bokeh. When you zoom to tele, the f-number will increase. For example, the f-number is F2.4 when you zoom to 2.5x. So you can only get F2.0 when your focal length is at 24mm (1x)

Yes...i'm aware when zoom the f-number will increase.
higher f-number create more dynamic range photo correct.

hehe, this one consider lucky lar... just step on a chair and im manage to catch the scene tongue.gif
the nest is build on a rack which is use for planting, and the bird is not moving at all when im taking picture... but still i need to use digital zoom around 5x to 6x in M mode only able to get this shot...
too bad the bird body is cover with leafs and some angle cannot place my camera also...

1 thing i notice, the digital zoom within 6x is still acceptable, the photo is still very clear. thanks to the LX3~!! rclxms.gif

U can check the settings with EXIF reader, i didn't deleted my EXIF, it is still in the picture.

Try google opanda exif reader, download, and install it. Right click the photo, then u can see the option View EXIF/blablabla.. biggrin.gif

I guess frequent customers would noe where this is. Soong Kee Beef Noodles in KL. Around Masjid Jamek LRT station.

1 question: how do you guys break the barrier of afraid of taking out the LX3 and snap pics on the street /in public? Like how you guys protect yourselves from snatch thieves and stuff. Or the occurrence of it is like never?

EDIT: It seems photos hosted on flickr doesn't show its EXIF to plugins. Using opanda as well as FxIF.

Wanna ask, is it necessary for me to censor the number plate?

Sry if I've posted too many pics of cars esp if they are taken badly.
C&C pls~

P/S: Is it that we can only view EXIF via FFX plugins of Flickr Pro users? Coz mine's a free account and I can't view the EXIF of my pics using Firefox plugins.

This thread and this camera proves that it's not the Camera you have the makes a great picture... but it's the person who's behind the Camera... Love all the pictures in this thread... just sold my 350D and all it's lenses... might consider this as a 2nd camera to add to my gears... nice one guys and gals!

Honestly, I'm Poisoned...

These photos are to be uploaded onto blog, hence the watermark.

Still amateur. But I absolutely love the pinhole effect. I think I am gonna take photos with that effect, it's cool!

hahaha.. yo uzumaki.. yup, it is UTM lake.. damn, i should have patented it.. hahaha.. i didnt expect anyone else would stop to take a picture of that.. the fact that you took that shot with a LX3 is even more amazing! what are the odds of that thumbup.gif

@ Uzu,

Lovely pics! How did you do the 1st pic (b&w in the background and colour in the focused area)? PP? What about 3rd and 5th with the faces so clear and the background blurred? What modes and settings did you use?

I realize that Malay wedding has very much in common with Indian traditional weddings, such as the painting on the hands, dowry, bersanding etc. Thanks for giving us such an insight. smile.gif

yeah i PP-ed it. Create two layer of the same object. Convert One layer into black and white, the second layer (the one with color) select the hand and inverse the selection and delete it. Same thing with the background blurred, one layer applied into gaussian blur the second layer arent, cut out the focused one and it'll look like the surrounding blurred and the object is centered.

i tends to like smaller camera, i dunno why. haha. example Leica M8..but that one rm20k @.@!!
G1 is around rm2400 now.and i heard gh1 around rm4500 due to the kit lens very mahal which can use for shooting HD movie.
I tried out G1, love it and pic quality also not bad ! biggrin.gif

plus it got external flash accesory, lens adapter so that can use LEICA D LENS !! and there are more lens available de. sufficient to me. brows.gif
