oem software can add something or remove something from the original software, and put another brand on it.

An original equipment manufacturer, or OEM is typically a company that uses a component made by a second company in its own product, or sells the product of the second company under its own brand.
Beside referring to manufacturers, OEM can be used as an adjective to describe software licensed only for a particular system. OEM software is purchased alongside a system or hardware parts. Certain OEM programs have limited functionality, but most do not. OEM software is often cheaper than the full versions but not as cheap as academic or student editions. OEM hardware is hardware packaged for computer administrator and builder use. These products are normally plain boxed and often don't come with any instructions or references provided in retail packages. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_equipment_manufacturer |

OEM is something that, they provide you the CD-Key and Installation CD ONLY.
Example : Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (OEM) and Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (Retail Pack). I believe you saw a lot of pc shops selling OEM Windows Software (which only CD + CD Key + a white plastic box) .. Compare to Retail Pack, Retail Pack is much more beautiful box. Below is the pic : [attachmentid=705089] (Retail Pack) [attachmentid=705090] (OEM) Regards This post has been edited by stealth89: Dec 8 2008, 01:26 AM |

QUOTE(falconLee @ Dec 8 2008, 09:34 AM) No it's not. The difference is that OEM license is only valid for the PC that it get installed on and the license are not transferrable, but Retail license can be transferred from one PC to another (provided that you didn't use it on more than one PC a a single time). Contents inside are same, but the price are different. Retail license cost more than OEM license, ranging from rm100-600 (or maybe more). |

Not necessarily cheaper though. Some may be more expensive because they slap their more prestigious badge on it. Example, (if I'm not mistaken) Acbel PSU was rebadged and sold by Cooler Master and they put a higher price tag on it.
Cars also get OEM-ed. Kia cars are being sold by/as Naza. Hyundai Atos being sold here as Inokom Atos. |

Have you ever heard of Windows being rebranded/rebadged as (let say) the infamous Lindows? No! That's why OEM Windows is always cheaper! Cars also get OEM-ed. Kia cars are being sold by/as Naza. Hyundai Atos being sold here as Inokom Atos. |

QUOTE(falconLee @ Dec 8 2008, 09:34 AM) OEM can't transfer license to another PC but some people have managed to do that by calling Microsoft and giving excuses so that Microsoft will allow their transfered licenses to be activated.QUOTE(FarCry3r @ Dec 8 2008, 07:56 PM) Yes and No. You can also purchase OEM version of Windows without purchasing any hardware. Correct me if I'm wrong. Nothing to correct, cause your correct. OEM can be purchased alongside when you purchase your laptop/desktop or separately. |
