Type of camera/lens/accesories :  PnS
Budget: <1300
Your Location: KL
Preferable brand : Canon / Sony / Panasonic
Type of photography u want to do : Leisure n Travel
Any specific models in mind? : IXUS 980 IS or IXUS 870 IS
Any specific features u want? : Acceptable video recording quality as well

At the moment, can't really decide 980 or 870 since I don't seems to know that much difference between the two models. Does anyone knows how much they are sellin for IXUS 980 IS in KL now? Currently abroad so can't check the price. Will be grateful if some recent buyer can advice.

Thank you.

ok. i am using the old 860 IS...
there is i point that i wanna remind u is that r u really need to capture a really wide view? then 870IS suits u bcoz it has wider angle than 980IS (28mm vs 35mm) u should compare both on the spot by the time u decided to buy... spend time to think and dun regret later... cheers

Type of camera/lens/accesories :DSLR
Budget: RM2K-RM3K
Your Location: Selangor
Preferable brand : Canon or Nikon
Type of photography u want to do : Macro shots, night shots,  landscape, portrait.
Any specific models in mind? : EOS 1000D, 450D(not familiar with nikon's model)
Any specific features u want? Image stabilisation

After checking all the replies in this thread, I have came across a few Nikon's model but I need recommendations.
My friend suggested me to get the Canon one because of the IS that comes along with the kit lens.
He said it's more worthy. I'm not very sure though.
What do you guys recommend for entry level? I'm planning to invest more on the lens/accessories to the body.
Thanks in advance.

each brand has it own fans base... i also using canon DSLR and a canon supporter but nikon also has its own advantage... just buy wat u want and further more it is ur money...
between these 2 i would suggest 450D...

450d's price inflated? Hmm..seems like 1000d is more worthy.
TheWandererX, I see that you are using a 1000d, how is it? You don't plan to upgrade the body anymore?
Because I saw you bought a few lenses already. Oh ya, by the way, you are using Nissin speedlite, is it cheaper?
*
it has its own perception... i also using 450D...
just 450D got 2 more AF point and larger LCD screen and viewfinder... also lack of spot metering which wont be very useful for newbie like me... up to the buyer to decide whether to invest more on body lar... no offend
last 450D got proximity sensor which is great drool.gif

Hi all,

I am a newbie for DSLR. I am planning to buy my first DSLR within this month. Currently, I am in dilemma between the Canon and Nikon. I went to the camera shop in Sg Wang Plaza and he suggest me to buy Canon 400D as I am new in DSLR. After I compared the picture taken by canon and Nikon, i found that the picture taken by Nikon is much more colorful. So, I went to the same camera shop again to get more info from them. They told me that this is the Nikon style and it is used for the landscape shooting. They also told me that the canon is more to the portrait shooting. Is that true? I am confusing now....I am worry that i can taken the nice landscape photo while i m in traveling in oversea. The purpose that i wan to buy a DSLR camera is use for my traveling purpose. Most of the picture that i take in the trip are landscape picture and of course my own picture(portrait). So, which one I should go for it? Nikon D60? or Canon 400D or Canon 450D? Another question here is what is the latest pricing for Canon 450D(body only) in KL now? The cheapest one that I ask is RM2200. I really needs advice on this...plz....thank you.
*
u dun listen to these ppl bullshitting lar...
then different occasion use different camera? how bout macro and BW? use sony and pentax as well? doh.gif
u can see that nikon color reproducing is more tempting for u but this can be adjust on canon DSLR... proceed to menu and picture style section u can adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, color tune...
but i advice u to go and see the picture taken between these two brand at flickr website and compare 1st...
u will notice only a minimal gap between these two brand... and also go to the shop molest kaw kaw 1st b4 u decide to buy it...

Type of camera/lens/accesories : Compact camera
Budget : Flexible though about a thousand or less would be ok (please suggest an appropriate budget)
Your Location : Kuching
Preferable brand : None
Type of photography u want to do : General purpose camera, Landscapes, shots of houses (interior and exterior)
Any specific models in mind? : Nope (though I can probably get the Canon Ixus 80is with my maybank treat points) biggrin.gif
Any specific features u want? : Does not suck too bad at night tongue.gif Vibrant colors and easy to use

I'm looking to buy a camera for general purpose taking and it MUST be small enough to fit easily into a pocket so size is very important but I don't want to sacrifice too much on quality. It also shouldn't be too expensive until I would feel a lot of pain losing it as it will be used quite ruggedly (taking it up to me on my Mount KK climb).

Appreciate suggestions!

Slightly larger models I will consider though frankly when it's too big to put into your pocket comfortably, I usually am too lazy to whip it out sad.gif

i cannot give much comment on compact camera coz i never do some research on it but i would only recommend canon PnS since i have very good experience on it... u might consider bout the wide feature which will be very useful for landscape shooting thumbup.gif

Hi,

Type of camera/lens/accesories : Prosumer/DSLR
Budget: RM1.5k - RM2.7k
Your Location: KL
Preferable brand : None
Type of photography u want to do : Mostly landscape
Any specific models in mind? : Panasonic LX-3, Canon 450d
Any specific features u want? : Wide angle

Have been using Powershot S3 for 2 years++, want to go further with photography. The reason i want to change to dslr is because of its sensor size ( better output at higher ISO compared to compact camera ) and flexibility of changing lens based on needs. But I am kind of attracted to LX-3 wide angle and smaller size too. Can I have your recommendations please?
*
want the best landscape with ultra wide angle? of course a prosumer will be no match with a DSLR... but u will need to invest a lot more on lens... u will save a lot for the cheapest C1kD for under 2k with a lot of freebies but the UWA lens itself (Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM) will cost u bout 2.4k... its all up to u

I have a question about the 1000d.  It says that it doesn't have spot metering, what is that and how can it be useful (or not) in practice?  Thanks!

for a people that is new to photography u dun need this spot metering... normally u will only set it to evaluative metering... try to discover others simple functions on ur dslr 1st b4 try this setting because this is normally for professionals... because 1000D is a entry level dslr so canon insist not to include this function on it...

For a beginner, 7 AF points is enough. Too many AF points and you'll start to use your DSLR like a PnS.

Get the D60, or if you would consider Canon, the EOS-1000D.
I'd recommend the D60/1000D for your future. These two are reasonably priced DSLRs and are very good ones - enough to satisfy your needs till L pops up.

As I have posted many times before - Sony is a new entry to the DSLR market so it's not recommended to go with them first - let them stabilise before buying Sony DSLRs.
*
i couldnt agree anymore with u... having move AF point is an advantage...
like as u quoted too many AF point is like an PnS so the high-end/professional model such as 5DMkII/D700 is also same as PnS?

but i agree with u not to get the Sony Alpha not because Sony is still new to DSLR but the disadvantages is regarding its lens which is very hard to get in used condition... so everytime u will need to buy a new 1 which is generally more expensive than Canon/Nikon lens

So which would you suggest?
Your 1000D or A200?
*
actually it is up to u... every dslr user will definitely want the best IQ... a good IQ not only depends on the camera body itself (sensor and processor) but also the lens which contribute a lot in capturing the best sharpness...
last if u have many money any camera and any lens would satisfy u in the dslr world but if u have limited budget and seriously wanna play dslr i would suggest u to get nikon/canon because u can easily find their 2nd hand accessories which is very cheap...
