I'm new psp owner here. just bought an old psp phat from my friend. The firmware is 3.40 OE-A. Can i straight away upgrade to latest custom firmware? Or do i have to do something ? anyone mind to provide link to me ? And the psp comes with 2gb memory. Can the psp support higher capacity memory like 8gb? thanks for helping.

Ok. You can upgrade to a higher custom firmware, and i will provide you with a guide to upgrade directly to 4.01m33-2. I've used this many times, and i can assure you that it's good. Before i begin, i shall explain some important stuff to you.

To upgrade to a firmware higher than 3.52m33, you'll need 3.52m33-3 or higher. Sounds confusing? Well, here's an example. You have 3.40oe-a and you wish to get 4.01m33. Here's what you need to do. First, install 3.52m33. Then, run the -3 or -4 patch. Then, run the 4.01m33 installer and the -2 patch.

By using Hellcat's Reflasher, you do not need to upgrade to 3.52m33-3 before upgrading to a firmware higher than that.

Here's my guide on it.

Guide : http://psph.malloc.us/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=107

Yes, 8GB will work just fine.

Added on March 15, 2009, 7:24 pmI have followed your guide but when i wan to run the eboot from : PSP/GAME/RECOVERY. An error message appears. It wrote that i must run the reflasher in XMB because something is lower than 2.71. What does it mean ?

Set your kernel to 3.xx

Go to recovery mode/configuration/ and set game folder homebrew : 3.xx.
Then run the flasher.

Thanks for everything playboy. But i encounter another problem which is my whole PSP turned off on its own. It hang there when playing games and stucks there for a few seconds before turn off itself. It happens to most of my games. Anyone experience the same problem ? Is it hardware issue or firmware issue? Thanks for answering me

You can try formatting your stick, or just mess a bit with the UMD Mode. If that doesn't work, then try a different stick.

hardware, check the power switch & psp battery,
1. change batteries & see
2. get a psp service personnel to open it up & check the power switch part.

*also, disable start umd on psp boot up at recovery menu.

It most probably cannot be hacked, but it depends on the motherboard really. If your unit has a Pandora proof motherboard, then you won't be able to "hack" it in any ways. So the key to it is the motherboard.

I don't know, that "one section" sound problem happens a lot on my MP3. A little rotation of the jack usually solves it.
