Please don't poison me anymore. I will repair my PS3. Not I will not buy BD35 (for now at least!).  flex.gif

Just repair it bro. If the Sony Centre is charging too much, and wants a few days to do it, just PM a few forumers here who can change the lens for only around RM300. Bro Corez has done it before.

He's looking at BD55. Come everyone, the more the merrier. This thread is supposed to be about movie lovers and home theater/audiophile stuffs, it don't belong in the PlayStation section. PS3 is just one of the players. The BLU world is much bigger than this.

The Dark Knight Closes in on 2 Million Units Sold Worldwide

Posted December 17, 2008 08:21 AM by Josh Dreuth

Warner Bros. A week after hitting store shelves, the Blu-ray release of Warner Brothers 'The Dark Knight' has sold over 1.7 Million units worldwide, shattering all previous Blu-ray sales records. The film, which stars Christian Bale as the caped-crusader, is set to break $1 Billion at the box office, and some execs feared that home video sales would be hurt by such success. Those fears were alleviated after selling through 600,000 Blu-ray units on the first day, and sales of the landmark title have been continuing at a record pace.

The worldwide numbers include retail and rental sales in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Benelux, and Australia. The majority of sales came from US buyers, which bought over 1 Million units of the title. Blu-ray sales represented nearly 13% of all home media sales for the title, which sold 13.5 Million units on home video formats.

In comparison, 'The Matrix' DVD release in 1999 - which is generally recognized as the title to spark sales of the format - sold 780,000 units in one week. The Blu-ray release of 'The Dark Knight' has more than doubled that accomplishment.

Blu-ray has been recognized as one of the most wanted items this holiday season, and consumers are responding aggressively towards lower player prices and the high definition releases of many film favorites. Interest in the format has exploded as consumers budgets become tighter and they realize they can get the same or better movie watching experience in their home with Blu-ray for a lot less money.

To quote Anna Paquin from her role as Polexia Aphrodisia in the film 'Almost Famous, "It's all happening!"

Didn't know the video is in 1080i  doh.gif , anyway I will check out the PQ this weekend.. smile.gif

There was a re-release early this year, everything physically the same, but a different SKU number. The video was fixed to 1080p with this new release. So, don't worry Pisceguy.

The original release, watching the main feature only you'll get 1080i. But viewing with PiP, you'll get 1080p.

Here's the 2 releases of T3 (note the BD release year):

However, both releases are now discontinued.

OK, everyone, let's tell what your first BD is. Mine was Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Tun Mega, IIRC, your "first time" was Hellboy right?

Grain is good.

It's the grain that keeps film-based movies sharp, detailed, and life-like.

Intentionally grain is fine (like 300) but like Transformers night scenes (Shia's first encounter with Bumblebee), don't quite fancy that...looks like a flawed transfer or a wrong film choice/cinematography decision. But dats just me...the daytime and effects shot - exquisite!!
*
For film-based movies, there's no such thing as "intentional grain". The grain will always be there, no matter what. It's the chemical properties of the film stock, the negatives, if you may.

If the grain is missing, that means a heavy DNR has been applied during the transfer. This will usually take away the details and sharpness of the movie.

For movies shot on digital HD, sometimes the director intentionally digitally add fake grains to make it film-like. One example is "Miami Vice".

Most releases in UK from Warners/Paramount/Sony are region free. Some Disney titles are not. Almost all Fox titles are not region free.

However, should always wait until release date and check the region code sites to confirm first before buying.

Hmm.. sorry I don't get it why for RM100 is cheaper than the US version (which retails around $25), which
has the digital copy and BD live.

Unless.. for RM100, you got Batman Begins bundled free with it too?
*
He just received his first BD, please don't try to spoil his joy. It's region free so it's still a good first buy.

I haven't updated the firmware since 2.50. Always wait a week and read reports. If there's a problem, I won't update.

But this the longest time I haven't update, been busy with the other player. whistling.gif

I don't advice everyone to do this. It's a very dangerous thing doing anything without thinking! tongue.gif

If money not an issue, of course, just get whatever you want. For those who don't want all those extra stuffs, why pay more? When you have the chance to save, why not? Try to think a little bit, eh?

Did you do the full system restore? Is that necessary? This way you have to backup, and restore which would of course take few hours.

There's another option, don't remember, "Restore PS3 Settings" or something like that, takes only a few minutes. I had an issue before, where my MP3 sounded so bad, so distorted. I looked everywhere for the problem, even on the receiver. But after I did that "Restore PS3 Settings", everything was normal again.

Added on December 20, 2008, 6:34 pmOver $60M Spent on Blu-ray Last Week

Posted December 19, 2008 03:32 PM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray Disc According to Home Media Magazine, consumers spent over $60M on Blu-ray titles last week, representing 14% of the home media market. The 167% spike is due in large part to the Blu-ray release of 'The Dark Knight', which is breaking Blu-ray sales records around the world. Comparatively, the previous week, where 'Wanted' was the hot new release, consumers spent $23.64M on Blu-ray.

On the year in whole, consumers have spent nearly $500M on Blu-ray titles, and the average spent per week has been growing as adoption continues to rise.

U mean the video in default is 16:9, it will be upscale? Can i change it to full screen??
*
Huh? Upscale? doh.gif

BDs are already 1080p, what to upscale?

You're seeing black bars (letterbox) because the movie has a wider aspect ration than your TV. Your widescreen TV is actually 1.78:1 aspect ratio, but some movies are wider than that, 2.40:1 or 2.35:1 and some at 1.85:1 which is close to your TV's ratio. For animations, the director can frame it at whatever ratio he want.

How do they come to this different aspect ratios? That will then depends on the camera and film stock, and lately the HD cameras.

On 35mm, they can shot anamorphically using Panavision cameras, the image will be squeezed into the 1:33 ratio film stock, so this way the ratio can only be 2.35/2.40:1. To make it full screen on your TV, they will have to do pan and scan and crop at the sides.

For Super35, the image captured is exactly 1.33:1, so when they transfer to cinemas, they're cropped top and bottom to make it widescreen. The ratio can basically whatever they want. For movies shot this way, they can open up to make it full screen to your TV, which will actually make we see the top and bottom that we didn't see in the cinema.

Why combine dvd if already got BD? Strange.

It's like combining vcd with dvd.
*
Just to slowly force DVD fans into BD. It will still play in normal DVD player.

This strategy only work if they don't release a DVD for a particular movie, but only released exclusively on this hybrid for the movie.

Boxing Day also marks a sad day in history. Hundreds of thousands perished in 2004, may God bless their soul. Rest in peace.
