Do you guys use 3.5" 1TB external hard disk to store all your collection? Do you recommend to buy 2 500GB hard disk to plug in instead so that not all your movies will be gone if one of them crash? Back-up the big data is a hassle here.
*
given the hdd price nowaday and the size of the HD movies, I would suggest twin 1TB drives rather than 2 x 500Gb.

I am using Vantec HDD Doc now, So i can swap in and out my HDDs

How much is the Vantec HDD Doc? how many bays support
my 1TB already max out...  sad.gif time for new HDD hunting...

there are many models available here http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/pro_list/70

The one I am using is http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/295 in black colors to match my WDTV biggrin.gif
bought it in SG, converted to about RM 170.

The reason I use this is because, if I need to transfer huge data files, I can always use the eSATA to my PC, USB2 is way too slow to transfer terrabytes.
I can use the regular external HDD, but I have no patient in waiting for data transfer biggrin.gif

the HDD Dock max out at 65MBps for eSATA on my PC, while the same dock only do 15-20MBps for USB2, my other USB2 HDD also around 15-20MBps.

I am thinking to buy 2 more docks, so I have all together 3, for my WDTV, Main PC and office use. Then I just need to swap my hdd without taking off the whole dock in future.

i had been thinking of using a hdd dock for awhile now, i asked here and some forumer says static electricity may fry the hdd and damage to the hdd may occur

the setup i was thinking was NAS Sever with 2 bay with 1/2 TB running raid and a hdd doc at the WDTV so i can just plug the hdd in after finish download at the NAS server
*
why not, u use the brad FW that's connect NIC and connect ur WDTV to ur NAS, easier than plug and unplug HDDs.

I throw my HDDs on desks for ages, none of them died on me yet. Those that died are usually inside my PC running 24/7 last time.
I turn off my dock when I am not using.

Maniac, no worry. I am also from Penang. Want to set up a forum for penang people just to share their HD rips collection?

don't need a forum, maybe a email list will do.

I cant seem to play the file, nor trying to converts via MKV2VOB 2.4.5, says FLAC not supported. Any workaround?

QUOTE(putih @ Jun 19 2009, 10:20 AM)

1) It gets hot even when turned off. You need to switch off the wall AC outlet (what the F88k!)
2) The PQ sux even when playing uncompressed VOB files. The upscaling is not automatic and pic with lower res (non-anamorphic) will be small in the middle of the screen and not automatically blown up to fill up screen nicely like in DVD player. Very disappointed.
3) SQ when play uncompressed audio (wav files) not good as claim by many others. My aim to make it as a music jukebox gone. DD 5.1 is OK.
4) DOES NOT DECODE DTS or even downsample DTS to Stereo (BIG trouble). Will play DTS movie with loud HISSSSS.
5) The HDMI socket at the back is a bit deep and does not fit some HDMI cable plugs.
6) NO internal Hard drive... I knew this before I bought it but now realize how sux without one.

1. when my player is off, AC on, I dun think it is hot. But then, turning off AC so difficult meh.
2. I dont play VOB anyway, I use my cheapo DVD player to play my DVD biggrin.gif But then, the upscaling should be auto as in my case, all my low res rips are all upscaled to fit the screen.
3. I dont play wav either, either flac or MP3 biggrin.gif I am a cheapskate person biggrin.gif Sounded fine on my cheapo system, but I do need them to give a simple EQ adjustment.
4. Play DTS with loud HISSSS? If you are not using an external receiver that decodes DTS properly, the WDTV simply doesnot output anything thru HDMI nor RCA Stereo plug. From where you get this HISSSS sound anyway.
5. I hate HDMIs anyway, not just this WDTV tongue.gif
6. Personal preferences biggrin.gif

Anyway, there's a USD 99 Bru Ray player!!!!

AC3 and DTS is a form of format use to reproduce surround sound on home theater and cinemas.

Is like, a kancil and a viva, both also designed to run from one point to one point.

There has been lots of discussion on which ones better around the net. Both got their pros & cons. Most modern AVR supports both of them.

WDTV does not has built-in decoder for DTS, so it will just ignore the sound clips if you does not have a AVR.

If you AVR supports HDMI, connect ur HDMI to AVR, then AVR to TV. In this case, I am dead sure you gets all both AC3/DTS on ur AVR.

If you AVR has TOSLINK/Opticial SPDIF Digital Input, use it. Most modern AVR will give u AC3/DTS also. You need to use HDMI to connect to ur LCD in this case, giving you only the pictures, and stereo for AC3 clips.

QUOTE(podrunner @ Jun 29 2009, 03:39 PM)
hi all,

Just wondering if other WDTV owners have "pixelation" issues with 1080p files bigger than 10G. I had 1080p Transformers 1 (over 13G), and pixelation was real bad, so I got the 720p version, which played fine.

Now am about to get hold of "South Pacific" (more than 11Gb, 1080p), but hesitating. Thought I'd come in here and ask around. Thanks in advance!
*
yes, this is known problem, WDTV cannot decode properly with 1080P encoded file with high reframe rate. Check previous posts.

P/S: my WDTV cannot play back 720p files recorded with Nikon D5000 & D90. Anyone having the same issues?

A check with Gspot codec info, the files is encoded with Motion jpeg at 1280x720.
