1 more cute question to ask:

what's the different in custom duty/tax if

1.your friend/family ship t-shirt to you from US or

2. you buy t-shirt online from US

hmm.gif
*
It's the same but most shops will not mark down the price/as gift for you. Also important to use the right HS code that determines the tax rate payable.

i was thinking who's the cuprit?

custom or the forwarder?

because i order t-shirt from US.

i check the code sales tax 10%.

but Fedex charge me nearly 25% shocking.gif

my shirt include shipping USD 81.00 @ RM267.00

my custom duty USD 20 @ RM66.00

any advise????

Just to let you know that there's something called 'kos tambang dagangan' where they add approximately RM380 to the value of your item + shipping so your item's worth in custom's eye is around RM650+ not RM267 hence why you got taxed. Welcome to the world of courier and Malaysian custom.

why is that happening???? rclxub.gif

not just sales tax 10%?

the statement stated ST 10%, but somehow my value worth RM267 being jack up to RM650+ then x10% = RM65+

The additional cost is applied to everything shipped using express courier: Fedex, DHL, etc. You can read about it here.

As you can see from that post, parcels from US has RM380 additional minimum charge. Basically you either don't ship anything taxable with express courier or you minimize it to RM120 for your item+shipping. It's ridiculous I know. Who will pay premium for shipping for a cheap item? doh.gif

walau eh...wtfffff

means if i buy CD from US cost USD30 @ RM 99, then they will automatic add RM380 as minimum charge?

become RM479 if under RM500 they wont charge ?

like this 1 ar ?

then if i buy USD200 @ RM660, they will charge ST10% @ RM66? or add RM380 ?

it seems like you die either go left or right rclxub.gif  vmad.gif

if my friend at US ship me new Iphone 5S how ?

still need to tax?
*
You also have to add your shipping cost to the calculation so even if it's RM30 to ship via courier, your USD30 item will be taxed. For your USD200 item, it'll be RM660+RM380+shipping courier cost=total item cost x tax rate.

If I'm not wrong, importing phone has no tax but you've to pay and apply for SIRIM.

then what's the point of RM500 limit?

might as well RM120 limit?

since they gonna add in the RM380 no matter how ?

but most case, US supplier provide free shipping, in the declaration forms stated shipping 0.00 cost.

so ?

add in RM380 again doh.gif

it's like mandatory rclxub.gif

They only add in the additional cost if you ship via express courier, normal post is not affected. They also add less if your item is heavier than the minimum weight stated.

so the keyword here is

1. use normal registered postage, shipping time 14 to 28days ?

2. purchase heavier weight than the minimum threshold?

feels so risky buying so many things, coz later custom tax costing BOMB. laugh.gif  sweat.gif

die either way

Basically yes, you either use normal postage with higher rate of missing parcel and longer transit time or you risk getting taxed with express courier. Of course this is not a hard and fast rule. I guess in the custom's eyes is that if you can afford to pay for express courier, you can afford to pay tax sweat.gif

That's weird no RM380 added in my duty invoice breakdown and package weight 7lbs (3.1kg). Using DHL Express for courier btw.

Is that RM380 item arriving US to KLIA Cargo only or what?
*
hmm.gif Is your item taxable? I'm not sure about that, where did your item arrive at?

I have a friend who once in a while orders video games from Amazon.com (US) but just recently the Customs incurred a rm39.50 duty on his video game which cost usd54.50.  Has anyone experienced this before?  He was planning to order a toy from the same site sometime this month as well.

No, I've never been charged anything by custom buying from Amazon and I've bought games worth a lot more. Did he use a courier company?

Not sure if it's the right place to ask but I'm wondering in the future when gst is implemented, would it affect all imports? Does that mean I have to go and pay for gst everytime I import anything regardless of amount rclxub.gif
