I am familiar with dogs and this is first time get to learn to takecare of new pet and my housemate tot i am a little over care for my GPs...i tend to worry when staying outside too long worry they will afraid and lonely...hahaaha sound like crazy woman~~

You can try treating lice with with a pyrethrum powder, spray, or shampoo made for puppies or kittens. They also make one specifically for rodents that is safe. Try looking for a product called Advantage made by Bayer. I have seen many sites that recommend this for lice treatment for GP's. Alternatively you can go to the vet and get your GP's a shot.

Actually I found a better solution than coloplast sheet, as the coloplast sheet easily chewed up by the GP.  Now I'm using aluminium/zink sheet to put the base of the cage.  Much more durable than using coloplast.  Nowadays, the bookstore sold the coloplast sheet is getting smaller size too.

Here is how the aluminium/zink sheet looks like.
*
I saw a thicker kind of cloroplast at the hardware just now. My husband called it to another name.. cant remember but it definetly looked better than the average thin cloroplast lol.

Btw Justiny.. O_o arent the zinc edges like sharp? U fold it is it?

QUOTE(finch! @ Feb 4 2009, 06:02 PM)
Hi everyone.
I just got my GP last nite from a petshop. It was so cute but I dont have idea how to take care of her properly.
When i was at the petshop, Coco (i named my GP this) was so friendly to me, and when i got her home, she was so scared. But I it is normal (hopefully!)
Today she becomes more calm and even let me hold her. She even made sound (wieet wieet something like that) which I think it was good.
Now she's hiding behind the hay. Is it ok if i set her cage like this? i put some dry corn bedding with lots of hays. Am I doing right?  hmm.gif
Any tunjuk ajar would be really appreciated. So new to petting a GP  blush.gif

oh btw, can I play with it alot? I love to do that but scared maybe I will bother her much. And, how long would it take for her to totally become familiar with me?

thanks  smile.gif

Cute GP! Tho u should have read about them first before purchasing.. But i guess now its too late~ nvm thumbup.gif cage setup is good but a little small imo.. since u put hay inside... dont need the hay rack.. but once she start eating them all need to restock.. also try to make her a hideout. GP's like to hide inside something when they are scared. I hope that tray is solid (to avoid bumblefeet) and high enuff to let the bedding stay inside ><

Yes you can play with her to let her bond with you. But not too much for the first few days. They get stressed easily. Also i notice like my GP's they get ressless after 15 mins holding them.. so put her back in the cage if she gets ressless. Give them floortime smile.gif they like to roam around exploring places. That is also their exercise, coz they dont require and wheel.. in fact they hate it smile.gif

Feed her fresh veggies daily.. also she will need alfalfa hay to grow ^^ Make sure there is always plenty of water for her to drink, they are heavy drinkers smile.gif Read up the front page of this thread. there is lots and lots of info ^^ Good luck!

I hand pick my GP's 'kacang' everyday tongue.gif But wont get all of it lah.. Since i use breeder celect, the cage seriously has no smell.. and its always not so dirty. If there is too much poop around just remove it.. their poop is nice and tidy tongue.gif so nothing to geli about.

Get Hagen pellets for Guinea pigs. The normal pellet i see a lot of pet shops using it, but im not so sure if its packed with nutrients or vitamins >< GP's cannot produce their own vitamin C... so need to give things that have sufficient vit C biggrin.gif

Get the brown ceramic bowl.. metal can senang to tip over.. like my GP like sitting inside her bowl while eating laugh.gif so definetly safe lah.. The small one just costs 8 ringgit.. Its not that expensive. Dark twilight told me to get a ceramic bowl which is no bigger than the GP smile.gif so i think u shud do the same too.

Its np asking.. we learn something new everyday.. i was once like you biggrin.gif since i like reading peoples comments and reading the web for info.. so thats why i learn something new everyday XD

Btw its nice that your GP has bonded with you.. shes a keeper! definetly a cute baby toooo~ thumbup.gif

Well...only the 4 corner edges would be sharp, but could use tape to seal it then.  I think those hardware shop sell type is very expensive for Pengola roof use, cannot be folded.  Unless another type is the advertising board type, also not as durable as zink sheet. smile.gif

Thx for the info Juz rclxms.gif will look into zinc sheets when i need to make a DIY cage..

i just noticed its also inside her left ear! some kind of dried skin in her ear sad.gif

shoot. i dont think there's any vet specific for small animals near my area. there's one petcare but i think its mainly for cats & dogs. i live in bangi, if anyone knows where can i get my Coco treated would be really appreciated. sad.gif
*
Calm down.. im sure that there is sure to be a vet that can treat GP's smile.gif
Have a look at the vet list here - http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/264418
see which is the closest to you, then give them a call and ask can they treat GP's. Try to treat it fast.. that really isnt looking good.. it could spread we dont know sad.gif

Yes its true! They are happy when they run around. Mine particularly like to chase each other around 10pm like that.. around 11pm it will be total silence coz they are in the dome resting until the next morning. My pellet and bedding also all terbang2 one hahahaha. Every morning also can see the bedding fly until outside of the cage. This morning was the first time i saw one of them popcorn when i was stocking up their hays XD

Hello all, I wanna ask usually where do u put ur cage? I put on the floor and guess they are very scare when ppl walking around then cage cos we seem so huge to them. Will try to put on table and see how it goes...They are hiding away all the time...so i have no choice to give them treat to make the out from the box...They have know how to recognise my voice so sweet...a little comfort when they finally accept me...at first very stress... smile.gif
*
Chubby i put mine on the floor too dont worry.. But its best if you have like a small desk to put the cage on. But make sure its stable.. wont be moving around if they run brows.gif Mine always get scared too but once they know who their owners are, you walk pass the cage also they do dunno rolleyes.gif give them time to adapt to surroundings. My son is fond of running around the house doh.gif but now they dont seem to care.. last time sure run inside their dome >_<

it is ok to mix them with timothy abit since she already bought it? cuz dun 1 to waste it as the nutrient will degrade in time when they are not eaten
*
This info chins give me rclxms.gif

A GP is under 6 months you feed = 80%Alfalfa + 20% timothy.
Above 6 months = Slowly change to 50% Alf + 50% Tim
After 12 months = 100% Timothy + occasional alfalfa
Adult GP (12 months) seen no appetite = 20% alfalfa + combination of any grass hay.

keep your hay high and not on the floor. Poke holes in the bag <--- this also chin teach me brows.gif
