what you can DIY is:

-use a powerdrill with a small bit to grind off the top piece of the screw. then after safe removal, try to grind of the remaining of the screw with an even smaller bit (this is risky work).

otherwise, it's really hard as screws on laptops are pretty small. being a flathead screw doesn't help much in this case.

QUOTE(E-J@1 @ May 14 2008, 07:49 PM)
one way to force remove it by drill it all the way

in your case its not an option as it is a laptop

left one option brows.gif

super duper glue (epoxy or any other damn hard adhesive material) the screw driver with the spoilt screw head

this will make the screw driver stick to the spoilt screw head really really hard (as if they were one part altogether)

then just unscrew it hands.gif

There is actually a kind of specific tool to remove screws like these.
Piece of very hard metal rod pointed at one end.
Pointed end has thread just like screws, but in reverse direction.
So you'll need to drill a very small hole, and screw in the tool to the screw.
Used to own a set, but now not with me.
Available at hardware stores.

Actually, it's called screw removal set.

The set I used to have is a smaller set. No pliers. Only 5 or 6 pcs.
Cost around RM2X few years ago.

If you cannot find the set or does not want to buy one, those that service hardware (drills/machinery) will usually have a set in their workshop. Can ask them to help you out.

by doing this, the screw will be forcefully push inside rite?

wouldnt that damage the lappy's screw thread (not the screw's screws thread)

QUOTE
user posted image

1-lappy base (or whatever inside, mobo, hdd, ram, etc)
2-drill
3-lappy cover

let's say that there's no room between the screw & the lappy base

by drilling will resulting damage to the lappy base, rite?

since drilling is goin to forcefully push the screw inside, or wrong?

Go to the hardware store and ask for a screw extractor. You can either buy a set which the size is from 1 to 5 or just get the size 1.
You can attach the screw extractor to the drill then drill it out slowly.
Don't use a drill bit. It will probably damage it further.

Can't use a plier. No point. Not even a long nose plier can get thru that small area. Unless you can get those precision long nose plier whereby their tip is very small.

Good idea on the epoxy glue. Mix the A+B then it will be tough.
There is a epoxy glue remover - I guess is a type of solvent. Not sure how effective it is.

Please do not use a drill if you are inexperience in handling a power tool.

By the way, next time try to use a proper size screwdriver. In your case, probably your notebook screw uses a phillip type No. 1 or No. 0
If you use anything bigger or smaller then you will damage the screw head.

Quite right. You can use manual (need not use power drill). The tip of the tool is what we call a screw extractor.
You can try to get from the hardware shop. Not sure how much it cost, but it should be less than RM 50.00

Something similar but you need not have such large set. Just go for the one that you showed.
Go to the hardware shop and ask for screw extractor and a T-bar handle/adaptor.

Glad you got it fixed. Now I'm facing the same problem. The Phillips screw head for my HDD compartment is detroyed. From + become O already. shakehead.gif

Did you manage to see how they removed it? And what tools they used? Low Yat is kinda far away for me. Thanks!
